    1. Historic Mayors of Kinston?
    2. Jane Garner
    3. There is a list of Mayors of Kinston in the back of "The Heritage of Lenoir County" book. Speight Brock West served in 1861 and 1867. His first term appears to be for 2 years, and his 2nd term was for 1 year. It is hard to tell just how long the terms were because some are over a year, but most are for 1 year. Also listed among the Lenoir Co. Sheriffs as sheriff of Johnston Co. from 1750 to 1752 is John West. I assume that this part of Johnston became Dobbs Co. since it is listed in Lenoir Co. Heritage. Is this our John West's kin? Jane Garner

    1. Historic Mayors of Kinston?
    2. Robert West
    3. Is anyone aware of a list of the Mayors of Kinston over time? I have just obtained a copy of my 2-great grandfather Speight Brock West's obituary, which indicates that he served as Mayor of Kinston at some point. I would guess that point was somewhere between the Civil War (1865) and 1880, when he sold his store and probably moved to Asheville. Thanks, Bob West

Surnames: Brock, Ashcraft, Shaw, Outlaw Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/QUB.2ACE/1077 Message Board Post: Wondering if Kinston had a city directory in the late 1880's, early 1900's. Just received info that my ancestor, Stephen R. Brock, a Baptist minister, returned to Kinston after living in Camden, SC for a few years. (He was in the 1880 Lenoir Co. census). In the 1900 census, he and his wife and son (my grandfather) were listed in Union Co., NC. S.R. Brock served churches in Lancaster, SC in 1897, and between 1902 and 1906, he served the churches of New Salem and Pleasant Hill in Monroe, Union Co., NC. Anyone out there with info on Baptist churches he might have served in Kinston or Lenoir Co.? Thanks for any help or tips on how I could get this info.

    3. Hi folks! My 94 yr. old aunt just gave me a packet of poems that the sister of our ancestor, Stephen Rhodes Brock (b.4/22/1854 - d.1/21/1924) wrote during mid to late 1800's. Stephen was born in Duplin Co., but moved with his family to Lenoir Co. by the 1860 census. his father was Edward A. Brock, who was killed in the Civil War. The papers are in very poor condition, and although the penmanship is very pretty, the spelling seems to be more like the word "sounds" than how it should be spelled. Although back then, perhaps it was the way words were spelled! LOL!! Where is the best place or person for me to contact re: protecting these papers from any further damage? The poems were written on a type of stationery that has an embossed "Fairfield" on the left top of the page. Other poems are written on lined paper. They have been folded and refolded, and many are torn. Poems are written on the front, and in some cases, both front and back of the page. I am so excited about finding these. They were evidently in the trunk of Stephen R. Brock when he died in Winston-Salem, NC at the home of my grandfather, his son, Walter E. Brock. I think Stephen, or his mother, Catherine_______Brock saved them, as the author of the poems was listed in the 1880 census as having "consumption". The poetry appears (from what I can decipher) to deal with her feelings about death and her acceptance of it, and her desire to have all family members come to know God. Who knows if she ever gave her writings to any of her family members? Perhaps they were found by her mother after she died. What an exciting mystery! Incidentally, Stephen Brock, tho a farmer, also became a minister, and served churches in Clinton, Rock Hill and Lancaster.
