The only information I have on him is limited. His name was Charles Olan ROBINSON. According to the information that I have on my father's birth certificate (for Charles Olan ROBINSON, Jr.), Charles Olan ROBINSON was born about 1903, somewhere in North Carolina. He was living in Roane County, TN, at least by 1925, when he met and married my Grandmother, Bonnie Pauline DEVANEY. I'm afraid that I do not know his exact date of birth or death, nor his parents' names, nor whether he had any siblings. However, Charles Olan is a rather unusual combination. Can anyone help me? Thanks.

    1. Lost Chapter in Civil War History Meeting 04-06 Mar 05
    2. Jewelle Baker
    3. Hello Group... Read the very interesting article below from today's Kinston, N.C. FreePress. If you're within driving distance, plan to attend. U.S. Colored Troops meet brings scholars, historians to Kinston March 03,2005 Karen McConkey Staff Writer http://www.kinston.com/ The year was 1854. As the rumblings of the Civil War grew, slaves and free blacks knew the day would come when they must choose their battles. For many free and enslaved blacks, that battle was for freedom and emancipation. "Earning the Right to Citizenship" is this year's theme for an event organizers hope will help illuminate a lost chapter in Civil War history. A symposium for the U.S. Colored Troops will meet this weekend in Kinston, chief organizer Malcolm Beech said. "This is significant on several levels," Beech said. "This is a national organization that promotes the African-American participation in the Civil War." Historians and scholars know the impact these troops had in the ultimate Union victory. They hope someday to have American history books rewritten that include the contribution of Colored Troops during the Civil War. Beech said the weekend events tie closely to the 140th commemoration events of the Civil War that are slated here March 12 at the Richard Caswell Memorial State Historic site. "Because we have the Battle of Wyse Fork that was fought here on March 6, 1865 by Colored Troops, this really ties in with the commemorative ceremonies that are being held across the state," Beech said. Lenoir County and Kinston had residents who enlisted in the Union army and fought in the battle of Wyse Fork. Beech said the weekend events are also part of the Cultural Heritage Museum's efforts to support heritage tourism in Lenoir County. "We've gotten a lot of assistance from the Kinston Convention and Visitors Bureau as well as the Chamber of Commerce," Beech said. Chamber President Bruce Parson said his organization was honored to cosponsor the event, the first one Kinston has hosted. "It is a program to showcase the true history of the U.S. Colored Troops and this is a very significant part of Civil War history," Parson said. "This was a time in history we probably would prefer to forget, but a significant part of history and we need to know about it." The symposium kicks off at 6 p.m. with a reception at the Cultural Heritage Museum, 242 S. Queen St. The reception honors black Civil War heroes from North Carolina. Edwin Jones, a U.S. Colored Troops descendant and D. Stanton Biddle, president of the U.S. Colored Troops Institute, will speak. Frank Smith, president of the African American Civil War Museum in Washington, will lead off Saturday's events at the Hampton Inn. Other speakers include David Anderson, chairman of the Rochester Freedom Trail Commission; Lonnie Blizzard, historian; and authors Juanita Moss and John Gourdin. Re-enactors and USCT descendants are also part of Saturday's program that includes displays, exhibits and seminars. A wreath-laying will be held at Wyse Fork Civil War Battlefield at 10 a.m. on Sunday to honor fallen troops who fought at Wyse Fork on March 6, 1862. "Hopefully, people will go away with a little better perspective of the role played in the Civil War by the U.S. Colored Troops," Parson said. 3. NOTES on family bible by Clair Hadley The following pages from a Hall bible were kindly provided by Chaarlotte Ruffner, a descendant of Wm Henry Hall (1846-1931) on Feb. 20, 2005.The pages are in a scrapbook and have been removed from a family bible. All the information is from the same bible, though the recorders were different. We don't know when the information was recorded or by whom. I suspect the maiden Hall sisters, Carrie and Hattie, did the recording and perhaps Wm. Henry's daughter, Carrie Melissa , or his wife Annie was the third recorder. I have a sample of William's signature and it does not match any of the recorders. NOTES on BIRTHS: The handwriting for Rosaline, Geo., Harriett Ann, Henry C. William Henry, John Harvey and Sarah Lucretia is the same (recorder #1). The record for Caroline and Benjamin Franklin is by a 2nd recorder. The record for Harriet M. Caswell is by a third recorder who obviously a mistake as the incomplete date of 185 makes clear. I also note that the original Christ Church baptism record clearly has Rosaline T. Caswell rathar than Rosaline M. Caswell. My final observation is that Harriet M. Caswell died June 10, 1858 and the two sisters had her will from her death until 1886 when it was probated. Harriet A., Caroline, and Sarah appeared for probate and Harriet declared that the will had been in her possession. Recorder # 3, who made the Harriet M. error, was obviously not aware of this. NOTES on DEATHS: The record for Henry C. and John Harvey is done by recorder #1 The record for Benjamin Franklin is done by reocrder #2. NOTES on Marriages: Purnell and Rosaline's is done by recorder #1. Sarah and Richard's is done in blue ink by a fourth recorder. 3. When I read the February 19, 2005 edition of Ancestry Weekly Digest today, the following item caught my eye. The maps on this site are wonderful! Also, there are links to other sites that might interest you. I looked at a number of maps of North Carolina for various years by following the procedure outlined below by Carolyn Williams. Since I was interested in maps of North Carolina, once I got to the "Historical Map Archive," I clicked on "Individual States" under "The U.S. & North America," and from there I was able to select North Carolina or any other state of interest. The maps span more than a century of time and load rather quickly, so it was interesting to be able to see how (and approximately when) some of the county lines shifted about over time. Some of my research involves people who lived in areas that may not always have been a part of the same county, so I'll be looking for records in counties adjacent to these areas, especially since "burned" counties ar! e involved. Becky Hill ************************************************************************************ SITE FOR SOUTHEASTERN MAPS I recommend this site for southeastern U.S. maps: http://maplibrary.ua.edu/full%20atlas%20page.htm (Click on "Alabamamaps" and then "Historical Maps") I have found it most helpful. If you go to the Georgia map collection and look at the 14th (Anthony Finley's 1823 map) and 15th (1833, Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge) maps, you will see the area that would be the Cherokee purchase.
