    3. For those of you working on the Bryan family, a number of us have been gathering information for the past 1 1/2 years on the first 4 to 5 generations of this family all prior to 1800. It is our hope to straighten out the various lines starting in Va and moving into NC. Our List is informal and not part of ROOTS L. We will NOT start putting the lines together until all the information has been gathered and this has been a slow process. In the meantime, we have an extensive working database which is subject to many changes. I have almost finished Jones Co but have a couple more hours of work to do in the deed abstracts. Several of you are already on the list, but for those of you who are not and would like to join, please email me privately and I will send you the information. There are several people on the list who go back into Jones County. Martha

    3. Barbara, I am really researching Jarmans and Messers and some McDaniels in Jones Co. NC. However, I am speculating that there may be a Wood connection with the Jarmans. Have you seen the book called "Records of Jones Co. NC" by Zae Hargett Gwynn? It has a lot of excerpts from wills, deeds, etc. I'm going to pass on some notes I have on Wood. Don't know that it will help. But, I think they lived in the same area as the Jarmans. I am particularly interested in finding out about a Sydney Wood, since Hardy Jarman's wife was named Sydney. Tonight, I can't seem to find my ref. to Sydney Wood. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jones Co. Wills 1781-1812. Will Book A. 3. MarJo, While looking through junk I have, I just noticed my notes from Jones Co. Will Book A, p. 212 (LDS film 386900) Here's a NANCY BRYAN who married a LEVIN LANE. 3. Barbara, In Jones Co. NC the deeds, wills and court minutes survived and can be very helpful. Do you have an LDS (Morman) church near you with a Family History Center. They have copied lots of records onto microfilm which can be ordered and searched at your local LDS library. I am also interested in the Wood family. More on that later. Cynthia

What is the likelihood of finding much info if I came to Jones Co? It's a fair hop from Texas to Jones Co, and I don't want to waste the time to come if there isn't much to be found there. 3. I am looking for information on the parents of Edward Wood. On the 1880 NC census, I find his mother listed as Nancy Wood, born in Jones Co, NC. It indicates that her parents were from Jones Co, also. Who was Edward's father? Who was Nancy's parents? ANY info would be greatly appreciated. Nancy had the following children: George, abt 1828 John, abt 1831 Edward, abt 1836 Isah (Isaiah?) abt 1837 Eliza A. Abt 1832 (may have been wife of George) There were two Nancy Wood's listed in the census. I believe 'mine' is the one that was in the Beaver Dam part of Jones Co. An article from the Wood/Woods family magazine mentions that Ivy Harrison sold to Emanuel Jarman , guardian to Isaiah, Edward, Amos, John and George Wood...land "at the mouth of London Bridge Branch near back line of land sold by Edwin Becton." This indicates to me that by August 1839, Edward's father had died. But who was he? My father was John Edward Wood, son of Isaiah Alpheus Wood. Isaiah was the son of Edward Wood. Isaiah Alpheus Wood was born in Jones Co, NC, abt 1889 but moved to Warren Co. In Warren Co, he married Nannie Jones Smiley. Included all the above details in hopes of giving all of you more info on any possible leads, Thanks for your time in reading it. Barbara (Wood) Litt

    1. From the Listowner
    2. William Temple
    3. Hi all, I'm the owner of this list. I became a Rootsweb member in January after sending them $12. I figured after using their mail lists for over one and a half years I should support them. I had been on the these surname mailing lists when they where being hosted by the Maiser system at the University of Indiana but in May of 1997 all the lists were moved to Rootsweb because the Indiana people were having a hard time controlling a spammer to their mailing lists. At first becoming a "Listowner" was a scary thought. I've thought about doing it for over two years but the thought of it seemed to technically complicated. "Do I have the technical skills, how much will I have to read, will I have the time?" All these things went through my mind. But I knew some listowners from other lists who owned many lists and they thought it was actually quite easy. So I decided if they could do 2 or 4 lists for the past two years then I can do one little list. So I jumped in and here we are. And I must say its easier than I thought it would be. And I encourage all of you to send in your $12 to Rootsweb and open up a list of your own if one doesn't exsist for a county or surname your interested in. Don't wait two years like I did thinking its too complicated, it's not. And mailing lists are a great communication tool. Its not as hard and scary as it seems. One suggestion I have is if you have ancestors in Jones County's neighbor Onslow County, please think about opening one up for that county. Mary Westbrook-Drake is a busy woman hosting at least four GenWeb Pages that I know of: Jones, Onslow, New Hanover, Pender, & Dobbs County. So I thought I'd open the Jones county list so she wouldn't have to take on any more work than what she already has. And I wanted to talk with other Jones County researchers. This list officially opened February 7, 1999 so it isn't even a week old yet. So far there are 3 people subscribed to the Digest and 8 people subscribed to the List. Right now the Jones County mailing list is mentioned at http://www.rootsweb.com/~maillist/newlist.html because its too new but after a few days it will be moved from there to the United States page list at http://www.rootsweb.com/~maillist/us/index.html Both pages can be gotten to from http://www.rootsweb.com/~maillist/ As for putting the list messages on the Jones County GenWeb page I would hope that wouldn't be done because that would defeat the purpose of me opening up this list, to save Mary work. And I've never seen that done before on any other GenWeb page & mailing list. The only thing that comes close to anything like that is actually the other way around. On the Pasquotank & Historical Albemarle mailing list the GenWeb host posts the new queries on the GenWeb page to the list. And that's the only list I know of that something like that goes on at. And it really is not necessary since Rootsweb already saves all the mailing list messages at their site. To search past messages of this list or any other Rootsweb mailing list just go to the "Rootsweb Mailing Lists - Interactive Search" page at http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl and type in the name of the list you want to search. Maybe providing a link on your page to the Rootsweb Archive Page at the above mentioned url and saying "past messages of the Jones county mailing list can be searched at this site" would be the more easy thing to do. My first question to fellow Jones County researchers is regarding the book "History and Genealogy of Jones County" 1987, edited & published by Julia Pollock Harriet in cooperation with Owen G. Dunn, Co., New Bern, NC. This book was done in the same style as all Heritage series books for the other North Carolina county histories yet the other county Heritage books are still available for sell by their respective counties Historical or Genealogical Socieites but the Jones county book is not available and there is no Jones county Historical or Genealogical society like in the other counties. Mrs. Harriet took pre-orders for her book, had one printing of the book to cover the pre-orders, and it has not been available to the rest of us since that time. Mrs. Harriet has died since her book was published, and I wondered if anyone knows who her children are and if they plan on publishing her book again in the future? It would be nice if this book were available for purchase to researchers who are only now becoming aware of her book. It is a rare treasure, especially since Jones county was one of the "burned" counties if I'm not mistaken and not as many records are available for that county as there are for other "non-burned" counties which makes her book an even more valuable resource. And lastly my ancestral query interest in Jones County is as follows: Francis DUVAL (1798-1845) married Nancy Ann BRYAN (1803-1883) on 15 Feb 1824 in Trenton. Nancy was born in Jones County on 25 Dec 1803. Does anyone know who Nancy's parents were? Does anyone know where the old Duval Place in Jones county is and if there is a family cemetary on the property of the old Duval place? Is Francis' father William Duval buried there or anywhere else in Jones County or was he buried in Craven, Pitt, or Edgecombe County? William & Francis appear on the 1810 census for Edgecombe County but I don't see any trace of either of them after that in the census records except for a William listed in Guilford in 1820 and a William listed in Craven in 1830. Why wouldn't Francis show up on the census when his children were being born in Jones County from the 1820's to the 1840's when he died there? Also, William L. "Bill" Murphy mentions the DuVal Place in his article "The Thomas Murphy Family" in The Heritage of Craven County book. Can someone put me in touch with Mr. Murphy so I can get directions to the Duval place in Jones county from him? And I suspect if Nancy Ann Bryan's ancestors where not deeply rooted in Jones County they may have moved there from nearby Sampson County. I have no proof of this but I'm not geeting anywhere in Jones County with my Nancy Ann Bryan so I've started wondering about neighboring counties with Bryan's in them and what their connection with the Jones County Bryan's were. Any help would be greatly appreciated. William

    2. Hi Mary. Personally, my feeling is that posting messages from NCJONES-L to the web page could result in "clutter" at the web page, along with possible duplication. Someone might post a query at the web page, not knowing that their NCJONES-L query had been placed there. For me, NCJONES-L provides the opportunity for "casual" inquiries, while the web site provides an opportunity for the "serious" query. As long those subscribing to NCJONES-L are aware of the web page, and as long as the web page references NCJONES-L, I believe the two forums are best left independent. I don't feel especially strongly about this, but you are soliciting opinions. If you decide to post NCJONES-L queries at the web page, then perhaps it would be best to ask for permission to avoid duplication. You can find out more about me by reading my bio on my home page or (asking!). It occurs to me that queries placed here should be placed on the Jones County Page also because they are archived there and also placed on the Surname Helper Index which is growing wildly and getting lots of publicity. Do you think I should pick them up automatically, or ask for permission? How do you think the list and the page should interface? 2. Dear Lee and et al. I just received some information from Steve Page, the coordinator of the Sampson County Page, about the LEE family in Sampson County. They connected to the Westbrook line there. Do you think you could have some connection with them?
