    1. GILSTRAP family
    2. I am working on the GILSTRAP family who was in Craven County, NC by 1749, and then my branch was in the area which split off into Jones County. The family left Jones County (seemingly :-) by the mid 1790s. I have information to share with anyone working on the GILSTRAP family anywhere in the US. Nancy G. Mann

    1. Cemetaries
    2. I have been told that many of my ancestors were buried in cemetaries now no longer in use, some even dating back to slavery time. I am in need to find the old Ravenwood cemetary and the old SIMMONS cemetary. I know that they are both located in Pollocksville-one off of Highway #17 and the other in the Oak Grove area. I would like to find out if either of these cemetaries are still in existence, if so how would I go about finding them and obtaining permission to do some research. Ramona

    3. Well, it seems the page was ready several months ago, but had not been connected. That has been corrected and Mike DeLoach, the NC Coordinator will handle it for the time being. You can go to the below URL and submit your hard work from there. I have worked with Mike quite a lot since he took over as the coordinator and he is first rate. Please take the time to submit your wills, deeds, Bible records etc. Queries still go to the county site. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/jones.htm

Her parent's names are Johnny Franklin Watson and Lela Rebecca Hardison Watson. They were tenant farmers I am told working the Tobacco fields mostly. Does anyone recognize any of these names? Any help is GREATLY appreciated! Kellie Stevenson (LadyKCS@aol.com)

    1. NEW JONES CO ARCHIVES PAGE
    2. Martha Marble
    3. Mentioned to Elizabeth Ross there was no Jones County Archives page and Jones is almost the only COunty in the state without one at this point. Elizabeth has volunteered to start one and hope she can then find someone to take it over. Mary has done an outstanding job with the County page, but the archives project was started to put typed copies of primary documents - ie Bibles, Wills, Deeds, Court records etc. The two sites for each county work together and sometimes duplicate. Queries are only found on the County page. Elizabeth hosts the Lenoir, Greene, Martin, Pitt County Family researchers, Gates, and Craven County archives sites, among others and has done an outstanding job. This page will depend on you for submissions - have already sent her two Bryan Bibles. When the page is ready, will let you know. In the meantime, you might want to check some of her other pages to see what would be appropriate for you to submit. Elizabeth is strict about requiring submissions be from the originals to the extent possible. Nothing from a pubished book. It is best to have Bible records from a copy of the original but that is not always possible - the two Bryan Bibles are from typed copies found at the NC Archives. Start gathering your documents. Martha

    3. In the interest of speeding up download time (as well as reading time), may I suggest two things: (1) If you are replying to a message that has appeared in the list, it may not be necessary to append the _entire_ original message. Cut and paste particular parts of the original IF you feel your reply will be easier to understand as a result. In the last list, William's message seems to have appeared in its entirely three times. (2) It speeds up scanning for surnames (for me, at least) if you type them in ALL CAPS. Thanks (especially to you, Mary, for all your work on the list), Mike (who still owes the list an intro and background material--real soon now!)

    1. OLIVER- THOMAS and BRYAN
    2. Sylvia H. Jones
    3. Does anyone know the maternal grandparents of Lewis T. OLIVER? His parents were Benjamin and Elizabeth (THOMAS) OLIVER-married-1789 Benjamin died 1804. Did Elizabeth get married again after Benjamin died? Had she been married before she married Benjamin? Did she have a son name Lewis THOMAS? Who were her parents? Her son,Lewis T. OLIVER, is he the same one that was sheriff in both Lenoir and Onslow county? I know Lewis T.OLIVER'S wife was Elizabeth HOLT, d/o/Thomas G.HOLT/Elizabeth WALLACE. Elizabeth WALLACE being the d/o/Richard and Ann WALLACE. Lewis T. OLIVER and Elizabeth had a daughter Charlotte Elizabeth OLIVER who married Joseph BRYAN,who was his father? C. Elizabeth and Joseph BRYAN had a daughter Josie Ann BRYAN b/1844/d/1905 who married 1859 James Monroe WOOTEN b/1827/d.1899,lived Cathrine Lake area,Onslow County for fifteen years, then moved to Lenoir Co. I am trying to find how Marcus D. THOMAS near Catherine Lake area fits in with this family. For in the will of Elizabeth THOMAS, mother of Lewis T. OLIVER, she states the three daughters of Lewis THOMAS, as her three granddaughters, then beneath their names was also Marcus D. THOMAS(for whom is the g-g-grandfather to my spouse). I need confirmation who his parents are. I need this one link to get back to Wales. He being a descendant of William THOMAS Sr. and a possibility of Sir Philip THOMAS. I've been told both, but as yet have no document to prove it. Thank you ever so much for any help I can get. Sylvia

    3. Note: The NC Census Index for 1820 lists people of Jones Co. as being in Hyde Co. NC. Jones came right after Hyde, and I think the person doing the index did not notice that he had come to another county. So, if your ancestors are listed in Hyde Co., and you are not finding them on the film, look in Jones Co. Cynthia

    1. Jarman
    2. cynthia dean
    3. Betty, I know Hardy and Sidney had children. "Children" are mentioned in the estate papers, but they are not named. Hardy died without a will (1827). The 1850 Census of Decatur Co. GA says Solomon Green was from Massachusetts. I have found no deeds in Craven, nor Jones, Co. for Hardy Jarman. Hardy's name appears in court minutes as a juror between 1815 and 1827. Also on a deed where his father was sold property in 1822 to Simmons Harrison. 100 acres which had been granted to William Wickliff. Hardy was born between 1780-90 Hardy is in the 1820 Jones Co. Census, p. 269., same page as his father, William. Hardy Jarman household 1820 - Males 0-10 (1), 10-16 (1), 26-45 (1) Females 0-10 (5), 10-16 (1), 26-45 91) McDaniels nearby on this page are Silas, Risdon, Thomas, James and Buckner. On p. 273 are Risdon McDaniel, Esq., William Messer, John R. Oliver, Morris McDaniel, Edward Bryan, John Wood, John McDaniel, William Wood. Other surnames on the page are Franks, Gillet, Brown, Small, Harrison, Mallard, Gilbert, Shelfer, Pollack, Stanley, Harrison, David, Simmons, Kornegay and Koonce. 3. William, I can't help you, yet, but several things in your letter interested my. As I mentioned, I am researching Jarmans in Jones Co. NC. JOHN OLIVER witnessed a deed in 1779 when William Jarman bought property. There's another John Oliver will (p. 64 Will Bk A) - Feb. 1787. Two youngest sons; McDanold & Rizdon. dau. Anne oliver. son Wm. Oliver. Maried children :Sarah Lavender (?), Surtg (?) Mosses, Mary Brockson, John Oliver, Thomas Oliver and James Oliver. Wts: Robert Reynolds, John Pollack, Ben Pickren I know all these people lived near the Jarmans. One of William Jarman's daughters (Elizabeth b. c1784-90) had a child by James Pickering about 1812. By 1818 Elizabeth was using the name Pickering. William Jarman's son, Hardy Jarman (died 1827) was married to Sidney (?somebody). I haven't run into the name Sidney a lot. There was a Sidney Wood (can't find my notes on her now). And in Craven Co. one of the Furnifold Greens had a wife named Sidney, I believe. I got myself on the Bryan mailing list, because I have thought for sometime that there might be a connection between the Bryans, Messers and Jarmans. The given names of Bryan(t), Council, Hardy and Furnifold were passed down in my lines. Cynthia William Temple wrote: > Searching for the parents of Nancy Ann Bryan (25 Dec 1803 - 10 Dec 1883). > She was the wife of Francis Duval (27 Oct 1798 - 11 Apr 1845). A Sidney Crispin, James Bryan and a Elizabeth Bryan appear in the Craven Co., NC wills of a John Oliver 1766, Mary Oliver 1794, and John Oliver 1776 so I think there is some strong connection between the Crispin's, Bryan's, and Oliver's. 3. Cynthia, Thomas and Polly WHITLEDGE are my g-g-g-grandparents, I haven't really gone into much research on them as yet.I am planning to do them soon, though I do have info on some of the descendants. Truthfully, I only know of the two daughters, Martha and Mary"Polly". The certificate, This certifies that the Rite of Holy Matrimony was celebrated between Curtis HEATH of Jones County and Mary C.WHITLEDGE of Jones County on Oct/13/1843 at home of Thomas WHITLEDGE. Under the birth records it states she was the daughter of Thomas and Penelope WHITLEDGE. I have seen a Ambrose WHITLEDGE listed in the Jones/Onslow county records and wondered who he could be. I think he also had a daughhter name Martha, if I remember correctly. Are these some of your fore-relatives? How I also would love to have more info to put in my gedcom. I have only begun and haven't even made a dent in my info. Wish I had more info to share with you on futher back. I have plenty on the descendants. Sylvia

Do you have all the children of Thomas and Penelope and their dates? Bill thought Thomas was the son of Ambrose Whitledge of Jones Co. Cynthia
