    1. An opportunity to support our fellow citizens in a tough place.
    2. Dear List Members, I am breaking my own rule about genealogy and history only on our lists. I am copying this from health related support list I belong to. It was posted by one of the mothers of a man in Albania. I have deleted her part of the message. The rest of this is as it came to me. If you feel frustrated about the pictures we are seeing on TV...charity begins at home...and here is something concrete to do. &&&&&&&&&&&&&&& John, Steve Iwicki was one of my young officers I "trained" years ago. Now he gets a chance to run his own Intel Shop in Albania. He wouldn't be asking for anything unless his troops were in misery. Please disseminate. 1. Threaded Archives now available
    2. William Temple
    3. Earlier today I requested that the NCJONES list be included in the new Threaded Archives. The archive for the NCJONES list is now ready. The threaded archive is at http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ All future posts will be included in the threaded archive. Past posts will be included in the threaded archive at some future time when Rootsweb can get around to it. Until then past posts can still be searched from http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl I am forwarding the message I received from Rootsweb concerning the new archives. 1. Our two month anniversary
    2. William Temple
    3. Hello from the Listowner, Since its been a little slow, I thought I'd mention that tommorrow at 5pm this mailing list will be two months old! The NCJONES County Mailing List officially opened on Feb 7, 1999 at 5pm (EST). This mailing list has a total of 76 subscribers today. There are 44 subscribers to this mailing list in "mail mode" (which means they get each posting to the List immediately and as a seperate e-mail for each posting). Also, there are 32 subscribers to this mailing list in "digest mode" (which means they get just one large e-mail, with the different messages to the List as attachments. This format is not as immediate as the mail mode but you usually get it the same day as everyone in the mail mode, just a little later in the day. This mode is for those who don't want a bunch of seperate e-mails cluttering up their mail box. And if one subscribes to many mailing lists it is probably the best mode to use so one doesn't feel overwhelmed at the volume of mail that many lists can generate). Everyone of course posts their messages to the NCJONES-L whether their in "mail mode" or "digest mode" and the messages go to everyone in either mode. I don't have any new genealogy info yet on my Jones County ancestors. I'm still trying to find out where the old DUVAL family home in Jones County was located at. Francis DUVAL & his wife Nancy Ann BRYAN are buried in the main cemetary in Trenton. Francis was born 1798 (in VA?) and died 11 Apr 1845 in Trenton. Nancy Ann was born 25 Dec 1803 (NC) & died 10 Dec 1883 in Trenton. I still don't know who Nancy's parents were. If anyone knows about them please let me know. Please open up a mailing list at Rootsweb if one doesn't exsist for the county and/or surname you are interested in. Rootsweb is a great tool for us researchers to communicate with. I know that there still isn't a mailing list for Craven County, NC. Please consider opening up a Craven County mailing list if you have ancestors there. One mailing list from Rootsweb only costs the listowner $12 to open up for one year. And one mailing list is not very hard to maintain. It won't take too much of your time. So please consider becoming a Rootsweb Mailing List Owner. William

    1. Spencers/Spences of Jones County, NC
    2. Barbara Beall
    3. I am seeking information on the Spencers who resided in and around Jones County, NC. I am trying to figure out their place of origin. They may have descended from the Spencers who appear quite early (1690s) on the records of Currituck, NC, or the Hyde County Spencers. Or they may connect with the Spencers of Charleston, SC. Additionally, I am trying to figure out the identity of several Spence families appearing of record in Jones. The names I am looking at are INSEL and RICHARD SPENCE and MOSES and WILLIAM SPENCER as well as the surnames JOHNSTON, JONES AND JARMAN. Jones County NC was formed in 1779 from Craven County. A William Spencer appears on the tax records of Craven County in 1769. Craven was formed in 1705 as Bath County and in 1712, it was renamed Craven. Dobbs existed for a while and is now extinct. The "Records of Jones Co., NC 1779-1868, Vol. I" shows the following: p. 59. 177--Mar 28, 1795. Grant No. 517. To JACOB JOHNSTON for 405 Acres on Tuckahoe at Haycrofts hole at WILLIAM JONESES 84 acre patent, to WILLIAM SPENCER'S line and JAMES JONESES line at HALL JARMAN'S, JOSEPH JARMAN'S. [NOTE: I am particularly interested in this entry. William Spencer of Anson County, NC had a son named JOHNSTON SPENCER. The Jarmans intermarried with the Spencers in South Carolina]. p. 64 232--June 8, 1790. Grant No. 683. To JOHN JARMAN for 30 acres on the north side of Tuckahoe Creek at WILLIAM SPENCER'S LINE, THOMAS JARMAN. Entered Sept. 19, 1796. p. 113 30, 31--Oct. 26, 1784...One tract granted to RICHARD SPENCE on the east prong of Mill Creek containing 100 acres. p. 146 193, 194--March 13, 1788. INSEL SPENCE to Jacob Turner of Dobbs County NC for 30 pds, 47 acres in obbs County on North side of tuckahoe Creek at mouth of Indigo Branch. Wits: John Price and Robert Winsett. p. 964 (Marriage Record) 83--March 19, 1874. MOSES SPENCER to Jane Munford, by Nathan McDaniel, J. P. The NC Taxpayer Records show that a CHARLES SPENCER resided in Onslow County in 1769 while WILLIAM SPENCER resided in Craven County that same year. South Carolina records identify a JOSEPH CHARLES SPENCER, who was born 6 Nov 1738 in SC, who died 6 January 1837 in the Poor Valley, Lee County, VA. He was the son of William David Spencer and Sarah Hill. William David was the son of Alexander Spencer, who appears on the 1690 records for Charleston SC. Since Onslow and Craven Counties are so close together, it is possible that Joseph Charles Spencer of Onslow and William Spencer of Craven may have been brothers or cousins. I think these same individuals reappear on the records of Anson County. These Spencers were land speculators and owned land throughout Southeast and Western NC, so they appear and reappear on many records. The Insel/Richard Spence connection(s) with these individuals has me puzzled. The name "Richard Spence" may well have been "Richard Spencer." Insel was definitely a Spence. Any information on ANY of these people would be sincerely appreciated. Dr. Barbara Inman Beall BIBeall@email.msn.com

    3. >Resent-Date: Sat, 20 Mar 1999 12:46:00 -0800 (PST) Barbara, You might want to stop in Kinston and spend some time at Heritage Place, Lenoir Co Community College. It is the largest genealogical library east of Raleigh. It is on hwy 58 south on the way to Trenton - right at Hwy 70 and 58. The Kellenburg room at the library in New Bern has a little local genealogy but LCC is better. Also the Manuscript Division of Joyner Library, East Carolina University in Greenville has an outstanding collection as does the North Carolina Room on the floor below. 3. I am planning a trip to Jones Co around the first week in June to research my WOOD roots. What genealogy resources are available there ? Any recommendations would be appreciated. I am searching for information on Isaiah Alpheus WOOD, born May 1889/90. His marriage license from Warren Co says he was born in Jones Co. His father was Edward Wood. Isaiah had brothers Benjamin (born Oct 1884) and William H.(born Dec 1882.) In 1880 Census Edward WOOD is listed with what was probably his first wife, Susan M., age 30. Children were John, born abt 1872, Olivia, Abt 1874, Charles, abt 1876, and Mary, about 1878, all born in NC. His mother, NANCY WOOD is shown as living with them. She was born abt 1807. Any information on this family would be much appreciated, as would any info on Jones Co. Have been to Raleigh, but didn't find much info. (Maybe I didn't look in the right place.) Barbara Wood Litt

The way I would go from Richmond is down I-95 to US 70 East. Take 70 East to Ft. You might want to stop in either Trenton or Pollocksville and confirm the final leg of the journey as I am certain anyone there will be able to tell you a shorter way.
