I realize Nathan Isler isn't your primary line, but my Idolet GILSTRAP had some dealings with him. Interestingly, Idolet Gilstrap and his family left Jones County some time in the 1790s for GA also. They went first to Burke County, GA. Then they won land in Wilkinson Co. and Pulaski Co. I see the Isler's cropping up in all these counties too. Thought this might be of interest. I've wondered if Idolet had a daughter who married an Isler. Nancy G. Mann

    3. To Pat Carman Pat: One of the best sources is the Latter Day Saints Web site: http://www.familysearch.org/ , I have checked it for John Isler. If you enter the site, type in the name you want in the boxes indicated. On the sources page, click on the "Ancestral File" in the "Sources Searched" box on the right. This will bring up a list of John Islers, and you take your choice. I see a John Isler listed for Jones County. Click on him and see what you find. To see his children, click on the blue box on the far right ,"famaily." This should give you a beginning place. Let me know how you make out. 1. Craven County mailing list!
    2. William Temple
    3. Great news! Jones County's neighbor to the east, Craven County, has a mailing list finally. It's run by the USGenWeb Craven County web page host and is mentioned on her web page at: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/6598/Craven.htm I don't know how long its been there but this is great news. For detailed instructions on how to join that mailing list read the instructions here: http://members.aol.com/gfsjohnf/gen_mail_states-nc.html#NCCRAVEN To subscribe you send an e-mail to: majordomo@rootsquest.com with the command "subscribe nccraven" in the main body of the e-mail (without the quotation marks). This mailing list seems to only have regular mail mode (no digest mode). The other day out of curiousity I tried subscribing to a Craven County mailing list at Rootsweb before I discovered the above mentioned Craven mailing list. I knew there wasn't one (none is listed at Rootsweb) but I was hoping that with all these unsponsored surname lists they've created in the last few weeks maybe they created some unsponsored county lists too. Well, what a surprise I got when the subscribe attempt actually worked! I asked Rootsweb if this was their doing (an unsponsored list and if so I would volunter to manage the list) or if someone actually opened it up. Rootsweb said someone opened up a Craven County mailing list with them recently. I don't know who, Rootsweb doesn't give out that information but this list will of course have both regular mail mode or digest mode. So even though it still isn't listed on their site it is up and running. In the next few days Rootsweb should be listing it on their website and in their Rootsweb Review. To subscribe to it just send an e-mail to NCCRAVEN-L-request@rootsweb.com with "subscribe" in the main body of the letter (without the quotes). There doesn't need to be a heading (the heading is ignored during the subscribing process). Or to subscribe in Digest mode you would send it to NCCRAVEN-D-request@rootsweb.com William

    3. Nicholas Isler and his sons Christian and Frederick came to N. C. in 1710. Frederick had one son, John Gilliard( name changed to Isler by act of legislature in 1777). This John Isler had three sons, John, William, and Nathan. I am descended from William and John. John, William, and Nathan all moved to the Pulaski Co., Wilkinson Co., Ga area between 1810 and 1820. William died there in 1816. In his will he mentions the following children: Frederick Becton, Eliza, Sarah A, and Hannah P. William was married to Nancy Dulin, daughter of Rice Dulin. John Isler and his wife Mary Dullin had nine children: John Stanly, Frederick William, Nathaniel Green, Abner Rue, Merrett D., DeWitt Clinton, Mary, Sarah, and Eliza Jane. John moved his family to Tallahassee about 1830. Martin Young did some research and placed a copy of his work in the State Library in Raleigh where he identifies the children of Nathan Isler as the children of John. this information has been sent to the LDS Library in Salt Lake City. I have copies of John Isler's will and other information on his family that I will gladly send you by regular mail if you will send me an address. I am descended from William and John because John's son, Abner, married William's granddaughter, Martha. William's = granddaughter, Martha.

He married Sarah McDaniel( died March 2, 1870), daughter of Risdon McDaniel, February 17, 1835 in Decatur County. Sarah was born in North Carolina. 2. Hello: I'm researching the GROVES surname. Duplin County census of 1850 lists a Joseph Groves who states he was born in Jones county about 1793. Is anyone else doing research on this, or there any suggestions where to search for documents around 1793. Thanks Wanda

    1. Rootsweb supports this list for free...If you can help great!
    2. It is estimated that only 7% of the people using Rootsweb's resources are contributing to Rootsweb's support. Please help if you can. Please do not respond to this message to the list. WHY DOES ROOTSWEB NEED YOUR SUPPORT? by Dr. Brian Leverich <leverich@rootsweb.com> Sometimes it is difficult for users to understand the costs involved in operating RootsWeb and why it is worth genealogists' time and money to support RootsWeb. For example, take the United States census. RootsWeb is currently providing server support to the USGenWeb Archives and Census Projects as they bring the U.S. census online. Our goal is to have both a searchable index to the census *AND* images of all the pages available on an open basis for all Internet genealogists. Our best estimate is that bringing the census online will require about 3.6 terabytes of data storage. That means we will need about 200 18 GB hard disks, and each of those disks costs about $1,000. That means the data storage alone is going to cost $200,000, and that doesn't include the servers and the bandwidth to make that storage accessible over the Web. Is $200,000 a lot of money? Well, sort of. Regardless of how much they want to help, Karen and Brian couldn't pay for that even if they mortgaged their house and cashed in their pension savings. On the other hand, $200,000 is only about 67 cents per user at RootsWeb. That is about 1/100 of what some commercial firms are charging for data they have locked up in members-only areas. Bringing the U.S. census online is not the only project RootsWeb supports. We are hosting literally hundreds of other data projects, some American and many for other countries (like the British FreeBMD Project). If all (or even if most) of our users were contributors, there is a lot RootsWeb could be doing to accelerate the rate at which public records are brought online and opened to the public. You can help us bring those records online. For details about support levels/benefits and payment options, visit <http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html> or send e-mail to <RW-info@rootsweb.com>. The regular mail address is: RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative, P.O. Box 6798, Frazier Park, CA 93222-6798. 1. Estate Division
    2. Martha Marble
    3. Yes, minors were included in estate divisions. Usually you will find a hint they were minors with the use of the word minor or infant as used below. The use of these words can mean they were any age under 21 although in the case of boys it usually meant under 18. Girls were sometimes called infant even if they were over 21 and especially if they were not married. A little misleading. Martha >I recently obtained a copy of the 1795 estate division of Elijah DUDLEY >which leaves money and/or slaves to his widow, Cassa, and his three >children, "Cristopher Dudley and infant the eldest son", [unreadable -- >Elijah?] the youngest son", and "Cassa Dudley the daughter". > >It appears these three children may have been minors. 3. I recently obtained a copy of the 1795 estate division of Elijah DUDLEY which leaves money and/or slaves to his widow, Cassa, and his three children, "Cristopher Dudley and infant the eldest son", [unreadable -- Elijah?] the youngest son", and "Cassa Dudley the daughter". It appears these three children may have been minors. First, the 1790 US Census for Jones County lists one Elijah DUDLEY who had (according to their ages) one wife and one son. If this is the same Elijah Dudley as above, then his other two children were born between 1790 and 1795. Second, this Elijah DUDLEY appears have been the son of Christopher DUDLEY, son of Thomas DUDLEY, son of Christopher DUDLEY, as he owned part of the same land that the first Christopher owned (Jones County Deed Book A, 1734-38, p. 16) and willed (Jones County Will Book 5, p. 29) to his grandson, Christopher, who willed it to the above Elijah, who was still a minor when the will was written in 1774 (Jones County Will Book D, p. 135; Jones County Deed Book F, pp. 111-112). This means Elijah was born no earlier than 1753 and possibly much later, and so his children could not have been born before 1775, and they much later as well. So the three children above must have been minors. Is this possible? Were minors included in estate divisions? Or am I confusing Christophers and Elijahs? Thanks for considering my query.
