HI list, could someone help me understand this: Frederick Gooding is a brother to Moses Gooding. Frederick's will is probated in 1793, in which he left land to his brother Moses Gooding. Moses Gooding in his will of 1802 left land to his brother Frederick. Was this a practice to name deceased relatives with the clause of "...to him his heirs and assigns forever...". Frederick had no children nor assigns and no provision in Moses will to who inherited that portion. Very confusing. Thank you for all help. Ann
Searching for information on Pinkney Conner[O'Conner].He was listed in 1860 Jones Co.census.He later moved to Lenoir Co.His daughter Fanny Conner married George Slaughter in 1897 in Lenoir Co. Thanks Christine

2 follow ups on the Mill pond in Trenton. Thanks for the information. I just got off the phone with Charles Jones in Trenton re: the Millpond. He says that since it is considered a major dam the State has to approve any permanent changes or repairs but that since it is no the National Register of Historic places it seems likely that they will do so sooner or later. In the meantime they have permission to do temporary repairs to prevent more damage if a storm were to hit, which means there will be some water in the pond. Charles says the WILL repair the dam one way or the other and restore the water level. He says that engineers now say that the last hurricane caused the damage and that it is possible that they will be able to get either Federal or State money to put it back but expects at least 6 months of wrangling. I thought you should all know this (and Martha, please let people on the web know). Charles S. Wackerman, Sr. cwackerm@earthlink.com ***** I feel sure the dam will be replaced. I know the current owners pretty well and Charles lives in a nice home on the pond, first house from the old millhouse. He has worked on the dam for years, trying to keep it up. I'll find out what he plans to do about it and let you know. You're right, there isn't much left in Trenton to look at when you go thru. Even the old oaks on 58 coming into town are mostly gone. Glenn
How very sad as this is one of the prettiest ponds I have ever seen and makes the drive through Trenton a delight. Martha Martha: I'm sending this back channel because it has nothing to do with genealogy, but does concern something we've discussed in the past. My nephew who live just outside of Trenton called last evening to tell me that the dam on Brock's Mill Pond broke sometime yesterday (Monday) and that the entire pond except for a small area in the center which is below the level of the dam drained out in something less than an hour. He said that it appeared that the dam broke near the bottom and fell away under the rush of water. Also that there was some damage on the outside of the dam and to the roadbed of NC 58. The pond is, and apparently always has been, private property. So now the issue is -- will the Brock family restore the dam and thus the pond, given that it no longer generates any revenue? When the pond last emptied in the 1940s or early 50s the Mill still operated and thus there was an economic incentive -- other than historical there is no incentive now. But the pond is/was older than this republic and one of the few extant artifacts of our early colonial heritage, and arguably the most (or only) attractive thing remaining in Jones County. It survived the Revolution, the "late unpleasantness" and so many storms and upheavals, and now has just gone away. I fear that like so much of our heritage it is "gone with the wind" so to speak. I am saddened by this as it was one of my favorite spots, and was certainly something my late mother loved dearly. I just though you ought to know. Charles S. Wackerman, Sr. cwackerm@earthlink.com
Most importantly...all mail sent to me between May 31 and June 6 was lost in cyberspace as it was forwarded to the comcast @home computer. Having an @home connection saves me a lot of up and download time, but they don't have their act together. Working on what happened has taken at least a week of my time. Since March I have had major surgery and chemo. Now I am usually feeling well again. During that time I have acquired a backlog of data to post which will be showing up, not necessarily in the order I received it, but in the order I can get it up fastest. My grandson has finally gone to school and I am now free to think again. (I miss him.) So from my point of view, I hope you will start showering me with material. My highest want list is the cemetery near Southwest Creek in Verona on the government. Could someone survey that? I'll bet it is not even snake infested. Betsy has posted the Christ Church Baptism and Burial Records on the Craven Archives site http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/cravennc.htm There are a few entries that state a person was from Pitt or Jones but there are other entries for people from those two counties. There are an unusual number of African-American entries in the records. Miss Carraway appears to have only done the records to about 1848 and it would be nice to have them done up to about 1900 if permission can be gotten to work in the originals. That would have to be done by someone who lives in the area unless the records are on microfilm at LDS. Marriage Records have yet to be copied and typed. Maybe this week. Thanks to Guy for doing the very large Baptism file and to Betsy for posting. Martha

Already received a number of queries about Picton Press which most of you have no reason to know about unless you work mostly in New England or have German speaking immigrants. Think this is one of their their first book on the NC German speaking immigrants. They have also done some books for the Eastern Shore of Va which is why I am on their mailing list. THeir URL is http://www.pictonpress.com/ This site should answer all your questions. Martha
FYI - We will be notified when these books are ready for shipment. Since most of us have at least one of these Paletine families, this set should be very exciting additions to research in our area. Picton Press deals mostly with New England books so most of you are not on their mailing list. They do the best job of publication I have seen - all hardback and top quality work. Martha I wanted to let you know that in the new 2-volume set "Even More Palatine Families" which Hank Jones and I are compiling, you will find a good-sized section on the Swiss and Palatines who came to North Carolina in 1710. Given the three centuries of descendants, there must be a significant number of folks today in the Carolinas and Georgia who have Swiss and/or Palatine ancestors. This will fit nicely with Picton Press' series of books on the Salzburgers of colonial Georgia. > Yes, Victor Jones, Librarian, has indeed contributed his work, which >Hank and I have expanded and supplemented quite heavily. It appears that >we will be able to account, by name, for virtually all 106 of the Swiss >who left Bern, and close to half of the approximately 350 Palatines. Of >course many of the Palatines who died on the voyage have left no records >in North Carolina, but their names were recorded in London or Rotterdam. >The new book includes two new lists of those who returned to Germany from >England, so that we are close to accounting for all 13,000 Palatines. I >would be quite appreciative of receiving any and all new data on the North >Carolina crowd, not in Victor Jones' list, as I'm the one responsible for >the NC material. I hope to finish it up, in June, so if anyone has data to >forward, they should do so promptly. Don't I wish that we could have >access to the Palatine and Swiss deeds, etc. from Craven County! If only >Steve Bradley had been doing abstracting last year instead of next year. >At present, Hank and I are up to a total of roughly 1,700 pages, i.e. a >two-volume set. We are promising each other that it will go to the printer >this summer, with a publication date set for the end of calendar 2000. But >quickly I must point out that we are more than a year behind our original >internal date. We have about 1,500 pages typeset thus far, but there is >always more work to do. Price not set yet, of course. When I know more >specifically, we would love to have you help advertise it. Those of you who research one of the Stanley lines of Craven/Jones might want to check this out. Also Westbrook. This is the James Stanley line and contains what appears to be transcripts of an old BIble and the James Stanley Cemetery which may not exist any more. Between this and the information on the Wright Stanley family in the new Badger Bible, the early generations of the Stanley families in Craven/Jones appears to be established even if the original Bible can not be located. Larry thinks the James Stanley line might be out of Bertie. Thanks to Lisa whose graphics are quite elegant. Thanks to Helen for reminding me about this project ERNC is his Early NC Records Series. You might want to check his webpage at http://www.telpage.net/bradleyp/ well after Easter. He is a minister and this is a busy time of year for him. For those of you who do order the new books, you might want to include a note pushing him to abstract Craven Co deeds, wills, estate records - anything. Betsy posted the Badger Bible transcribed by Guy yesterday on the Craven Co archives http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/cravennc.htm It is the most awesome Bible I have ever seen. Most of us would give our left arm for such a find and it is worth looking it even if none of these people are your ancestors. You can drool. Some of you have the Wright Stanley line out of Craven/Jones. There are 23 surnames including Badger, Stanley, Green, Cogdell etc and many I have never heard of. Places mentioned go from New England, Virginia and numerous counties in NC that I know of. Latest date is about 1850. Martha
