1. Jones County Libraries
2. Mike Hardester
3. For those who may be visiting Jones County over the Holiday Season and plan to do any research at the libraries, the following may help. As best that I can tell, the Jones County Libraries will have no special hours over the Holiday Period. These hours may change as it is my understanding that the libraries are staffed by volunteers. It's best to call and check first. Also, they each have basically the same genealogical research materials. Their web site can be reached at http://www.neuselibrary.org These are the phone numbers and hours for the different libraries in Jones County: Maysville - (910) 743-3796 MON: 2 to 8 PM TUE and SAT: 10 AM to 6 PM WED and FRI: 1 to 6 PM Pollocksville - (252) 224-5011 MON: 2 to 7 PM TUE: 2 to 6 PM THU and FRI: 10 AM to 6 PM SAT: 9 AM to 1 PM Trenton - (252) 448-4261 TUE: 9 AM to 6 PM THU and FRI: 2 to 6 PM SAT: 10 AM to 3 PM Comfort - (910) 324-5061 THU: 6 to 9 PM SUN: 2 to 6 PM

1. Marriage Bonds
2. -- I have created a web page for Marriage Bond Index of NC 1741-1868 marriagebondofNC http://marriagebondofnc.homestead.com/Home.html This page is not complete and will not be complete for several months. There are over 8,000 Bride and 8,000 Groom microfilm pages that list all marriage bonds for all counties of NC. I will add new surnames weekly so please don't get discouraged if you do not see the surname you are looking for. I have discovered that once you obtain the Index page that you are looking for it is easier to contact the NC Archives and get a copy of the original Marriage Bond. If you would like a specific Surname added to the page you may send me an e-mail and I will put that name on my list to add ASAP. All I ask is that you send one e-mail per Surname. You may send as many Surnames as you like, but please do so separately so that I may easily alphabetize my list that I take with me. In the Subject area put MB of NC (this will get my attention) In the body of the e-mail type the surname you would like added in ALL CAPS. Best of Luck to you all in your search for your ancestors. J. Altenhoff

1. A Victory for Vernon Hall cemetery
2. Martha Marble
3. The descendants of Gov.Richard Caswell and other interested historians are delighted to announce that the Department of Anthropology at East Carolina University has agreed to excavate the area known as the Vernon Hall cemetery. The class project, to be held this Fall under the auspices of Dr.Charles R. Ewan, is to determine where the 18th century remains belonging to prominent Kinston citizens may be located. Among those who may be buried there are the parents of Gov. Richard Caswell- Richard Caswell Sr. (1685-1755) and Christian Dallam Caswell (1705-1787)- and his brother Samuel Caswell (1742-1785). Other Caswell family members and notable citizens such as John Washington and family may also be buried on the grounds. We would like to thank the many list members and Caswell descendants who wrote letters regarding the Caswell cemetery situation and offered support for this cause, with special thanks to Martha Marble. Her participation and involvement contributed greatly to the success of this undertaking . We would also like to thank the following people for their efforts on behalf of the project: Dr. Charles Holloman, for helping to save the cemetery when the clinic was built. Dr. Keats Sparrow, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, East Carolina University, Member of the Board of Directors of the North Carolina, Department of Cultural Resources, and a Kinston native. Ted Sampley - Editor, The Olde Kinston Gazette Dr. Charles R. Ewen, Director, Phelps Archaeology Lab, Professor of Anthropology, East Carolina University - Dr. Ewen did all the legwork, obtained the permissions and did the on-site inspection. He will be the project director and our source of information on the progess in the Fall. Betty Ray McCain, Secretary, North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources Stephanie Bourdas Smith for bringing the existence of the brick vaults to our attention. We wish Dr. Ewan, his associates, and the fortunate members of his class every success in this endeavor. A photograph of the cemetery in its present state has been sent for posting on Old Dobbers on the Caswell page. Clair and Susan

3. Hello Listers, I am sorry If you receive this more than once, but wanted to send it to all the lists and reach anyone who might know something, I paid my first visit to Heritage Place yesterday, (What a great place!!!) I ran across something that was very interesting to me, I wondered if there were nay descendants of Needham Simmons and Elizabeth Rhem on any of the lists, who might know more about this.... This was taken from the book, Abstracts of Onslow and Jones County and related families and was originally run in the Raiegh Register Jan, 14, 1820: "One the evening of 27 Ult., Needham Simmons, a wealthy farmer of Jones Co., in a state of intoxication killed his wife." I am only aware of one Needham Simmons (The son of Emanuel) and only aware of his having one wife. (Elizabeth Rhem) Does anyone have any more info on this??? Was it Elizabeth (Rhem) Simmons he killed??? What happened to Needham after her death???? Any comments or help welcome... By the way, just wanted to say, I LOVE living in Kinston!!!! Tracy Putnam

1. Aaron Wood Craven/Jones NC c1730
2. Brett F. Woods
3. I'm looking for information on the ancestry of the Aaron Wood (Sr.) who was in Craven/Jones Counties NC c1730. As Aaron (Sr.) was presumably an adult in 1736, I assume he would have been born prior to 1725. I believe Aaron Sr. had at least two sons: an Aaron Jr. and a Gershom. Gershom is later spelled a number of ways. I have spelled it this way because this was the way it was spelled in a 1761 Will he witnesses, as well as on the online enumeration of the 1786 Jones County Colonial Census. Below I have included some will abstracts in which Aaron Sr. is mentioned. Below that, I have also included the Wood Family census enumerations for Jones County up to 1820, as well as the will abstracts for Aaron Jr. and Aaron Jr.'s son John, to help sort out the later generations. It should be noted that Jones County NC was formed in 1779 from Craven County. Further, that both Aaron Jr., as well as Gershom, as speculated from the 1820 Census, seemingly have both named sons "John." I suppose this could raise the speculation that Aaron Sr.'s father was a John. I am hoping that identifying the origins of some of those mentioned in the early wills may provide some clue as to Aaron's ancestry. As an aside, the only direct Gershom-Wood connection I have discovered are a few online references to the marriage of the Gershom Whitney and Sarah Wood in Massachusetts c1751. I do have a more complete "working file" on this family that I will forward upon request. Until then, thanks for any comments or assistance. Brett F. Woods Santa Fe, New Mexico Will of Caleb Metcalf, Craven County 31 Dec 1736: This is a nuncupative will made in the presence of Joshua Platt, William Herritage, Adam Moore and Aaron Wood, and bequeathes all estate to daughter, expressing desire that wife have no part of estate. 3. Ann, Maybe Moses died first? How do you know when Frederick's will was probated or when he died? I read in Zae H. Gwynn's Records of Jones Co. that Fred's will was written in 1793, but no probate date was given. Maybe they had each other listed when they wrote their wills. Maybe Fred never changed his after Moses died. Just a wild idea. Cynthia
