Gail, Thanks for the opportunity to clarify the Ingram to Lee information that I posted to the Johnston Co List. I am an Ingram researcher and not a Lee researcher. As to any William Ingrams who were married to any Lees, the following is what I have accumulated. (1) Others on various Roots Mailing Lists have asserted that a Bethanah Lee, born about 1790, and died before 1835 married a William Ingram who was born 14 Mar 1790 and died 25 Apr 1860 Lowndes Co AL. I have asked for documentation of these assertions but so far I have no documentation. These same "facts" were asserted in a 1997 issue of the "Johnston Co Genealogical and Historical Society Journal." There is no doubt that Bethanah Lee did marry an Ingram and that she in fact did die before 1835. This can be proven from her father's Will signed in 1835 Johnston Co NC. This was the Will of John Lee, Sr., son of Edward Lee, and the grandson of John Lee, Esq. The death before 1835 for Bethanah Lee Ingram is based on the fact that she was no longer living in 1835 when her father's Will stated: "Heirs of daughter Bethany Ingram-$1.00 with Est. already received." At first I misread the Abstract of this Will and thought that Bethana Ingram was still alive in 1835, but she was not. I assume that because the birth and death dates are so specific for this William Ingram that they come from a Tombstone in Lowndes Co AL or from a Family Bible or some other document of this sort. But I do not know what this documentation is. The problem for me is that none of this states that Bethanna Lee was married to this William Ingram who later died in Lowndes Co AL, but some of her descendents claim that this is in fact true and the undocumented data in the Johnston Co Genealogical Journal supports this claim. (2) On, 20 Jan 1823, a Nancy Lee Johnson and a William Ingram were issued a Marriage Bond in Johnston Co NC. Their descendents say that this couple and their children were in Dallas Co AL by 1850, as does the 1997 "Johnston Co Genealogical Journal." Nancy Lee was first issued a Marriage Bond to marry a Littleton Johnson, 13 May 1821, in Johnston Co. So, if this is the same William Ingram who may have first married Bethanah Lee, the daughter of John Lee, Sr, then Bethanah died prior to 1823. However, I have no documentation that they were the same Ingram, though some of William Ingram's descendents state that he married first Bethanah Lee and second Nancy Lee Johnson. The 1 May 1823 Will of Jeremiah Lee states: "Daughter Nancy Ingram-150 acres land on SS Beaver Swamp, deeded to me by David Lee, 17 Mar 1814, etc. Jeremiah Lee married Elizabeth Avera. He was also the son of Edward Lee and the grandson of John Lee, Esq. So he was the brother of John Lee, Sr whose daughter, Bethana also married an Ingram. The claim by descendents of William Ingram, who died in Lowndes Co AL, is that William Ingram married first Bethanah Lee and then married her first cousin, Nancy Lee Johnson. Perhaps, Freda Noble can shed some light on this puzzle. I think that she is a descendent of or knew a descendent of William Ingram. Freda was also interested in a Fail connection. It is interesting to note that two of Nancy Lee Johnson Ingram's brothers married Fails. Isaac McDonald Lee, b. about 1805/10, married first Polly Fail and second Rachel _____. He was in Butler Co AL by 1840. Alexander Lee, b. about 1805/10, married Elizabeth Fail. He was in AL by 1836. Maybe someone can help straighten this out and provide some documentation.
