WILL BOOK I, JOHNSTON COUNTY, NC (FHL #019192) ================================================== Notes for ARTHUR BLACKMAN: Arthur was possibly the eldest son of John and Tabitha Blackman and had possibly already received his share from his father, as he only got a crosscut saw in the will. Arthur Blackman was at least 21 years old by 1799 when he listed 100 ac. of land and 1 poll tax in the tax records. In all his years of tax listing he only listed this 100 a \cres or 101 acres, sometimes. Arthur died by 1829 as widow Sally Blackman petitioned the court for her dower in the lands of Arthur Blackman deceased. She received 50 acres. Barzellae Blackman was appointed Admnistrator of his estate. During the years of listing tax, in 1813 Jeremiah Blackman listed taxes for Arthur Blackman, 101 acres, his father, in Josiah Adam's district. In 1814 Jeremiah Blackman again lists 101 acres for Arthur Blackman and 1 poll tax for himself and no poll for Arthur, meaning possibly that Arthur was over the age 50, limit for taxing polls. This 100 acres of land was deeded to Arthur Blackman in 1787 by John Blackman, on the south side of Mill Creek opposite the mill of John Blackman. Closely associated in the tax lists were Owen Blackman, Barzellae Blackman and Richard Hill Blackman. ================================================ Notes for SARAH: !1. OF State ======================================= Notes for JOHN BUNYAN KEEN: In 1810, Jerusha is named in the will of her father. In 1822, John was listed as security with William Blackman for the bond of Arthur Blackman as administrator of his mother's will. John and Jerusha are named in a Johnston County, NC court record dated November 1826 for a deed of conveyance. Soon afterward they moved with their children to Georgia and settled in Henry County by 1830. In November 1833, John purchased land in Henry County (now Rockdale). In succeeding years he purchased adjoining acreage, part of which was still owned by the Keen family more than fifty years later. Many descendants of John and Jerusha lived in North Clayton, Henry, South DeKalb and Rockdale counties, and are buried in the cemeteries in these area. Many family members still reside in these areas also. In 1840, John and Jerusha lived in the 622nd District of northeastern Henry County. Their neighbors were families named Cook, Parker, Ray, Blackman, Stanley and Crow. John was an elder of the Flat Shoals Primitive Baptist Church. In that capacity, along with Edmund Blackman, John accepted land given by Eliaken Stanley in 1843 for the erection of a church building. According to the 1860 census, John and Jerusha lived alone, but near John Jr.'s family in the White House area. In 1865, John B. Keen, Justice of the Peace, performed the marriage of his nephew, John Bunyan Cook, and Mary Skelton in Henry County. On February 28, 1866, a petition was filed in ordinary court stating that John Keen Sr had recently died and Jerusha was awarded a year's support. She died a few years later. They were buried originally near their old homeplace in a pasture that is now called Parker-Stanley Cemetery, but were moved to Flat Shoals Cemetery in Henry County in 1917 when that place was threatened by road improvements and construction.
