I viewed the 1860 census for Johnston Co., NC: PACE, ALSEY - 60 - FARMER $3000 ($300?)real est., plus $1000 pers.prop.(b.1800) Cassandra - 35 (B.1825) Noah - 23 (b.1837) Madison - 21 (b.1839) Harriet - 19 (b.1841) David - 18 (b.1842) Obedience - 15 (b.1845) Riner(?)/Rensnow/Ravensnow - male 13 (b.1847) Sally - 10 (b.1850) Solomon - 1 (b.1859 - son of Harriet?) Alsey was 1/2 white & 1/2 American Indian and he & family were often called free persons of color or mulatto in this period. Cassandra was white.
