"Smitty," as he was affectionately called, was born in Johnston County, N.C., and was a son of Annie Doris Smith of Princeton, N.C., and the late John Smith Jr.; he was the husband of Martha L. Smith of Virginia Beach. He retired in 1990 as a sheet metal mechanic from Minton Roberson Sheet Metal and had also worked in air conditioning and refrigeration at Smith's Refrigeration over 23 years. Mr. Smith served four years active duty in the U.S. Navy and retired from the U.S. Navy Reserve with a total of 23 years of service throughout his careers. He graduated from Richard B. Harrison High School in Selma, N.C., attended Norfolk Technical Vocational Center and Old Dominion University. Mr. Smith was a member of Cedar Grove Disciple Church in Princeton. In addition to his mother and wife, he is survived by a daughter, Tyra Roberts of Norfolk; two sons, Terry A. Smith and Kenneth E. Smith of Virginia Beach; three sisters, Sharron L. Smith of Oxon Hill, Md., Gail L. Smith of Bladensburg, Md., and Carol A. Smith of District Heights, Md.; eight brothers, John L. Smith of Hampton, James E. Smith of Oxon Hill, Jesse L. Smith of Princeton, Perry P. Smith of Spring Lake, N.C., Joe R. Smith of Landover, Md., Linnie R. Smith of Goldsboro, N.C., Stanley E. Smith of Dudley, N.C., and Dennis J. Smith of Washington, D.C.; his grandmother, Lucille Pollock of Jacksonville, N.C.; eight grandchildren, Trivon Brandean Smith, Terry A. Smith, DeOnte' Earley, Kierra R. Miles, Tania Roberts, Tiona Roberts, Tiyonna Roberts and Taniya Roberts; seven sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; his mother-in-law; three aunts; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. A funeral will be conducted at noon Tuesday at First Baptist Church Crestwood, 4701 Bainbridge Blvd., Chesapeake, by the Rev. George Henry. Interment will be in Oakland Cemetery, Hampton. The family will receive friends for remembrance and visitation from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Bonney Road Chapel of P.G.
