Linda, I consider myself to be very knowledgeable about the three (3) distinct Avera, Averyt, Avery lines in the Johnston/Cumberland Co NC area during the 18th Century. It is my long-term goal to sort out these various lines and trace their descendents up until the 1850 Census. Perhaps we can help each other. By the 19th Century (around 1800 and a little earlier) things get complicated for me in sorting out the various lines. There are lots of reasons for this, as you might imagine, but one thing that helps me clarify the various lines is to help folks like yourself who have reliable family data and who are working backwards from the 20th Century. It sounds as though you have data that will help trace your direct line of Averas. If you share more of your data with me, perhaps I can help you make a reliable connection to your ancestors. In return, I will have reliable data from you about the later generations of Averas (various spellings) who descend from ancestors who were once in Johnston/Cumberland Co NC. One challenge is that Alexander was a common given name in all of the three (3) distinct Avera, Averyt, and Avery lines living in Johnston and Cumberland counties NC, both before 1800 and after. To make matters more complicated, they married into each others Avera (various spellings) lines. AVERASBOROUGH was actually in Cumberland Co NC and is now in Harnett Co NC. However, it was very close to the Johnston Co NC line and so there are kin and records in both Johnston Co and Cumberland Co NC, to say nothing of kin and later records in Harnett and Wake counties, NC. It will be helpful to me for you to put some dates of birth and death, marriage etc. with the names that you posted. It is also important to state where these individuals lived when they were born, when they died and when they married. It would also help to know in what connection the Cape Fear River and Averasborough were named--that is in what kind of records.
