I have an ancestor, Thomas Jefferson Cohen/Cowen, and I believe he might have originated in North or South Carolina. In 1850, he first appears in AL, living next door to an attorney, M.S. Stansel. I wonder if the Cowen/Cohen name is associated with the Stansel name anywhere in the Johnston County area on a deed or census or as a witness? Thanks for any help. I know this is a stretch. 3. I have relatives in Pickens County, Alabama. I spoke with them today and determined that there is an unincorporated "community", named Stansel, in Pickens County, on Highway 17 between Carrolton and Aliceville, Alabama. There is a Baptist Church there, Telephone # 205-367-9293. This could be a start for you.
