    1. History of White Swan BBQ on US 301 -"Juke Joint" days?
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/gVB.2ACI/2798 Message Board Post: Hello, I am interested in finding out more about the White Swan BBQ place on US 301 between Smithfield & Holt Lake. I have been told it was a "Juke Joint" during WWII. Maybe with a wild west reputation? Who owned it then? It may have been called Jake's Place or Jessie's Place? I was told it at one time was a 2 story wooden builden and had a juke box and they sold illegal beverages. Remember, Johnston County was DRY then. Thank you

    3. The below is the only thing I could find about this tavern. I'm thinking Newspaper articles could be found and ordered online..For anyone interested in NC Barbecue and it's history, this book is wonderful! I am sure if my father were still alive, he could fill us in on the things he may have heard about this tavern..wonder if the tavern went through several owners??? Jeannie Tomlinson Benson NORTH CAROLINA BARBECUE Flavored By Time By Bob Garner Copyright: 1996, by John F. Blair, Publisher Page: 109 Just across the parking lot from the present barbecue restaurant (The White Swan) stood the infamous "Flower's Tavern", a two story roadhouse and tourist court dating back to the late 20's. It was apparently sort of a Tennessee Williams kind of place and you could almost hear the duet between the faint bluesy wall of a saxophone and the rhythmic humming of the cicadas as you imagine what the place might have been like on a sultry evening. "Dark automobiles huddle untidily in the building's shadow, their windshields and crome bumpers reflecting the bright red and blue flashing neon sign. Pale golden rectangles of light fall from the windows and cut sharply across a dusty parking lot, and from inside, the insistent thump of the drums is the only fragment of the jukebox's blase that manages to cut through a discordant babble of voices and the clink of glasses. From the dusky gloom comes the "clunk" of a car door opening, and a deep rich female laugh floats across the dark highway, disappearing into the black cloak of the woods". ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, April 14, 2005 1:27 PM Subject: [NCJohnston] History of White Swan BBQ on US 301 -"Juke Joint" days? > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/gVB.2ACI/2798 > > Message Board Post: > > Hello, I am interested in finding out more about the White Swan BBQ place on US 301 between Smithfield & Holt Lake.
