    1. Re: Parrish
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/gVB.2ACI/2822.1 Message Board Post: The lands of Justice Parrish were located at or very close to present day McGee's Crossroads (intersection of Highways 50 and 210) in Pleasant Grove Township, Johnston County, NC. There is not a marked grave for Justice Parrish and his wife Avisilla. There are very few early graves in Johnston County (indeed, in most of eastern NC). The burial custom of most early settlers of this region was to bury their family members on their own land in a family cemetery. Before the late 19th century, it is rare to find marked graves with identifying inscriptions. Most early graves, if marked at all, were marked with field stones or wooden markers. The concept of church or community cemeteries did not become prevalent in eastern North Carolina until the late 19th and early 20th centuries. That is why few early Johnston County settlers have identifiable graves. Descendants of the family of Johnson Parrish (son of Justice) and his wife Martha Stephenson are buried at a family cemetery off Dixon Road, which is northwest of McGee's Crossroads. Johnson Parrish's grave is not marked however, although a foot marker (with incorrect dates) dedicated to his wife Patty placed in more recent years by a descendant can be found there.
