Matoaka Pace was a teacher/tutor in the Earpsborough school called Hales School, founded apparently by the Earp family. Does anyone know anything about this school? When did it open in Johnston Co., NC. Apparently there was also another early school--Earpsborough School, students tutured by Mrs. Veronica Horton. I have the impression this may have been the first school, founded by a Mr. Brown. I think I also remember reading in the Johnston Co. Heritage Book that Matoaka Pace was a post mistress at one time.
