I have an ancestor from Johnson county with the given name of "Needham," and have noted other "Needhams" from postings. Does anyone know the origin of the name as a given name? Kay
They were named after a prominent official in the area. There are a lot of Needhams in my family. When I see the name I immediately think Johnston Co., NC. -----Original Message----- From: ncjohnst-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ncjohnst-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of kay bachmann Sent: Sunday, June 08, 2008 10:50 AM To: ncjohnst@rootsweb.com Subject: [NCJOHNST] Origin of the given name "Needham" ?? Dear List, Colonel Needham Bryan served in the Revolution from Johnston County, NC. He was born Oct. 31, 1725 Married Nancy Smith on Feb 5, 1748. His second wife was Charlotte Moore. Needham Bryan was a member of the colonial assembly of NC in 1762 & 1771. Her represented Johnston County in the 1,2,3 & 4th Provincial Congresses which met 1774, 1775, 1776. In 1776 he was active in the Battle at Moore's Creek. His resume is longer than I've copied above. I have an ancestor that had a child named "Needham Lee." My ancestor served under Colonel Needham Bryan. If I had to guess--I would say that most all of his loyal soldiers named children after Needham Bryan.
