    1. Zilpha Hall, b. 1798-1800 in Wake or Chatham Co., NC
    2. Betty A. Pace
    3. I am looking for the parents of Zilpha Hall, b. 1798-1800 in Wake or Chatham Co., NC. In 1820 in Johnston Co. NC she married my Alsey Pace (1785-after 1880). They moved to Guilford Co., NC, where Alsey disappeared around 1835. She was shown with their children in the 1850 Guilford Co. NC census and later moved with two sons to Mecklenburg Co., where she died sometime after the 1880 census. All or most of these (below) are the children of Zilpha Hall Pace, a family destitute and on the rolls of the Wardens of the Poor in Guilford Co., NC. PACE ORPHAN APPRENTICE BONDS - GUILFORD CO., NC - WITH MASTER ABNER - age 16. On 8/23/1837 to Hiatt & Jean (saddle trade)--MY LINE ABSALOM - age 19 on 8/17/1840. On 8/17/1840 to William Jean (harness trade) EDY - female - age 13 on 6/21/1841. On 8/18/1841 to David C. Sullivan (weaver?) GEO. WASHINGTON (called "JOHNSON/JOHNSTON" - no age. On 5/16/53 to Wyatt Erwin LIVELY - female - age 8 on 4/19/1839. On 8/22/1839 to James Thom NEEDHAM - about 8. On 8/22/1839 to James Thom (farmer) WISEMAN - age 12 - On 11/23/1837 to Christopher Hiatt (saddle trade) YOUNG - male - age 13 - On 8/18/1847 to Jonathan Armfield YOUNG - MALE - age 16 on 8/16/1850 - On 5/20/1850 to Isaac Armfield (cabinet maker) (I would bet that Jonathan Armfield died and Isaac took over the apprentice bond for YOUNG PACE) I am told that to be called an orphan, only the father need be dead/deserted/missing; the mother might still be in the county but unable to support. My ABNER PACE m. in Guilford Co. in 1843, and went to Rowan Co., NC following his marriage to JULIA ANN REED. He was the son of Alsey Pace and Zilpha Hall, m. 1820 in Johnston Co., NC. I know that at least David, Young, Needham were also children of this couple. NEEDHAM PACE and YOUNG PACE moved to Mecklenburg Co., NC around 1855 where they married; they took with them a ZILPHA PACE (b.1800 Chatham/Wake Co., NC), their mother, and her retarded son DAVID. Needham Pace (a carriage maker) moved to Mississippi (Lafayette Beat) by the 1880 census; his wife was Mary/Margaret Myers.. Young Pace died in Mecklenburg Co., NC, as did his wife Nancy Walls Pace. LIVELY PACE married William N. LITHCOE in 1850 in Guilford Co., NC, and EDNEY PACE married Thomas OZMENT Jr. in 1841, and EDITH PACE married Thomas H. GARDNER in Guilford in 1849. Most (if not all) of these Pace "orphans" were the children of ALSEY & ZILPHA HALL PACE (m. 1820 in Johnston Co., NC). I have established that at least some of them were the children of that marriage. The family was shown receiving aid from the Wardens of the Poor in Guilford Co., NC, in the 1840s, perhaps longer. . 1840 Guilford Co., NC census shows ZILPHA PACE ON P. 261. I know that my Abner would not have been at home since he (and others) were apprenticed before 1840. So I looked at Paces apprenticed after 1840. I don't know the exact date of the census, but it is early summer or spring. p.261 PACE, ZILPHA 1 m. (under 5) David? 1 m. (5-10) Young?--app. 8/1847 1 m. (10-15) ? 1 f. This is in the Southern Div. of Guilford Co., NC. Next door to Ziltha/Zelpha Pace is Isaac Armfield (cabinet maker) and his apprentice YOUNG PACE, age 15 (b.1835). This Young Pace, plus his apparent brother Needham Pace , will take Ziltha/Zelpha Pace and her son David with them to Mecklenburg Co., NC by 1860, and she lives with Young Pace there until her death around1890..
