I'm sure you'll hear from others much better at this than I am. Is your uncle from Johnston County? If so, I would recommend that you check his family church -- most of them have memorials to the WWII soldiers from that parish. My military history is not at all what it once was, and even then it wasn't much, but I believe that there are some records at Fort Bragg (which is in Cumberland County) that relate to the special forces (paratroopers) who were involved in the Normandy Invasion. My father's cousin, Gen. Bill Lee (from Harnett County) spearheaded that program and commanded those troops. His personal records are at the mansion in Dunn, but the official stuff is at Bragg. My uncle was in another regiment completely, but I know that his bunch still has reunions every so often, though he is coming up on 80 years of age. He was POW 18-plus months at Battle of the Bulge. My husband is a disabled Navy UDT/SEAL of the Vietnam Era. We regularly receive a publication from Disabled American Veterans (DAV). This publication regularly runs, at no cost, many ads seeking people who served with so-and-so. The other service organizations also run such ads. You can try this route if you need to by contacting any service organization, except VVA (Vietname Veterans of America) of course. Also, I don't know how it works in your state but in SC every county has a veterans affairs officer working with the American Legion to serve veterans. You could contact that office and get some better leads than I could possibly provide. I have a cousin who was a chaplain at Normandy and through Europe. He was the national chaplain of the American Legion. So is my POW uncle. At least where I grew up, everybody apparently joined the American Legion. That may be the best group to start with. Good luck in your search. Life is good.... annie
