WILKINS was married about 1845 to Sarah "Sallie" HOWELL of Wayne County, North Carolina. Proof of Sarah's surname was discovered by Frances G. HOWELL (Route 5 Box 585, Goldsboro, NC 27530), and published in her book, The Early Howells of Wayne County, North Carolina, Book 1, Henry Howell, His Descendants, and Some Allied Lines. Sarah was the only child of David T. HOWELL and Hannah HINES. David T. HOWELL, a son of Abraham HOWELL who died in 1794 in Wayne County, was born about 1776, possibly in Johnston County. He died about 1837-38 in Wayne County. Hannah HINES was a daughter of Joshua HINES, who died in 1822-23 in Wayne County. When Joshua HINES wrote his will, he named his daughter Hannah among his children. In an 1823 petition by some of Joshua's children, Hannah is referred to as "the wife of David T. HOWELL." In 1825 Sarah HINES, the widow of Joshua HINES, wrote her will naming her daughter Hannah HOWELL and her granddaughter Sarah HOWELL. In 1838 Hannah HOWELL, widow of David HOWELL, petitioned the Wayne County court for her widow's dower. This action named "Sarah HOWELL, infant heir at law." By 1848 Hannah HOWELL had died, and court proceedings named Sarah WILKINS, "the wife of Henry WILKINS," as her sole heir. An account of the sale of the property of Hannah HOWELL was given at the 13 September 1848 Court of Wayne County, at which time Sarah WILKINS was given as the sole heir and requested that the land be sold. The property appears to have consisted of about 60 acres on Charles Branch, adjoining Christopher HINES, Isaiah WIGGS, and others. We can only wonder at their decision to sell this land, since Henry W. and Sarah WILKINS seem never to have owned any other property. Furthermore, my grandfather told me many times that his grandmother was named Sallie Howell, and that she was from Wayne County. Mrs. Howell's research in the book cited above was a long time in coming, but I never doubted that she would be a Howell when the relationship was finally proved! Henry & Sallie's children: 1. WILKINS Hannah, (born about 1846) she lived with with her parents until at least 1870. After that, nothing more is known. 2. WILKINS John B., (ca 1848-Jan 1900) married Susannah FIELDS. 3. WILKINS Alfred, (b ca 1854) lived with his parents until about age 5; he apparently died young. 4. WILKINS James Henry, (5 May 1855-10 March 1910) married Sarah Bonner JORDAN. 5. WILKINS David Howell, (b ca 1855) married Harriett JONES. 6. WILKINS Mariah, (ca 1861-30 January 1901) married James P. PRICE. 7. WILKINS Buck Davis, (Jan 1866-12 January 1943) married Emma ODOM, Minnie EASON and Sudie Geneva GOODMAN. 8. WILKINS Sarah Ann, (10 October 1856-18 June 1919) married George WISE. 9. WILKINS Edith Jane, (7 August 1865-27 September 1940) married James Abraham CAPPS. My grandfather, Joseph Henry Wilkins, was the youngest child of James Henry Wilkins and Sarah Bonner Jordan. cyberbev@earthling.net
