The Clayton News-Star Wednesday, February 21, 2001 Author to speak to Historical Society Johnston County Genealogical and Historical Society invites you to join us on Feb. 20 for our monthly meeting at the Heritage Center at 7 p.m. The speaker will be M. Ruth Little, author of "Sticks and Stones: Three Centuries of North Carolina Gravestones." She will speak on monuments and the history of some of the graveyards in North Carolina. Warren Bagley presented the program at our January meeting about the "Johnston County Gazetteer" project the Society is undertaking. The purpose will be to try to summarize historic information on roads, rivers, creeks, schools, churches anything to which old deed references may be tied or that would be of a geographical historical interest. Many original references will be used (deed books, court minutes, topographic maps, etc..) to try to come up with reliable information. Another project that is being undertaken by the Society is the resurveying of the county's cemeteries. A detailed set of books was done from research done in the 1960's but the information in those needs to be updated as well as any unsurveyed cemeteries added.
