I believe he was born into slavery. Have been able to trace him back to the 1880 Census, when he was living in Selma with his first wife Mary Richardson. Later married my great grandmother Amanda/Manda Eldridge, daughter of Arnold and Betsy (Altman) Eldridge. Wesley and Manda lived in Bentonville. The only clue I've been able to find so far as to the identities of Wesley's parents is a mention of "L. & Sophia Atkinson" as his parents on the Johnston County Marriage Register (1883 marriage to Amanda Eldridge). Have not been able to identify any of Wesley's siblings. I believe he was deeded some land in Johnston County, which became the site of the Wesley Atkinson Family Cemetery. The line of Alsey Pace (illegitimate son of Stephen Pace, a white man, and an Indian girl) goes back to Richard & Isabel Smythe Pace of Jamestown, 1607. I have lots of documents that I can share with you. The father of Stephen Pace was indeed John Pace (wife Sarah Burge), and he was killed at the Battle of Shallow Ford, NC in 1781--he was a Tory/Loyalist and killed by Rebel/Patriot forces under Gideon Wright. Some of the sons were Tories and some were Patriots--we think Stephen was a Patriot, and died in Johnston Co. NC around 1806. Please contact me privately at: bapace2@juno.com I have never seen anything to suggest that Alsey Pace was a slaveholder. I have never been able to prove the father of Cassandra Dean, but someone suggested he might be Calvin Dean. I look forward to hearing what you have uncovered. I am descended from Alsey's first wife--Zilpha Hall. Her father James Hall lived next door to Alsey & Zilpha in 1820 in Johnston Co. NC. Then they moved to Guilford Co. NC, where the children were born. Alsey Pace seems to have deserted them there about 1835, and they were helped by the Wardens of the Poor. Due to the clues that I've picked up online in the last two weeks, I have found that my great grandfather Noah Pace's father is Alsey Pace. And that Stephen and John Pace are his grandfathers. I am seeking any info about the family as I can get. My relatives told me that Noah was a redish colored man, so to find out that he is 1/2 Indian is not a surprise. Another relative told me that Madison was probably his brother and a relative who has done family research states that his wife Mary Jane Haggens came from Virginaia and married a slavemaster's son, so was Alsey a slaveholder? I am also interested in learning Cassandra Dean's parents names and those, too, of Harriet Hicks. There is a mystery involving Harriet Hicks which I would be glad to discuss by private e-mail. Any clues/info would be of huge assistance. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
