Esther?? Blackman researchers say Tabitha (d. 1822), wife of John Blackman, was a Massengill -- Massengill researchers say she wasn't - what do you think? Thanks very much for your opinion - Lu
Hello Lu, In my reords I have several Massengale/Massengill - Blackman marriages, 1. JOHN4 BLACKMAN III (JOHN3, JOHN2, WILLIAM1) was born 1738 in Ingrams Twp, Johnston County, NC, and died May 19, 1810 in Johnston Co., NC.. He married TABITHA MASSINGALE Abt. 1760. She died Aft. 1813 in Johnston Co., NC. Notes for JOHN BLACKMAN III: 1. THE HERITAGE OF JOHNSTON COUNTY, NC (FHL #975.641 H2h) 2. WILL BOOK I, JOHNSTON COUNTY, NC (FHL #019192) 3. COUNTY COURT RECORDS OF JOHNSTON COUNTY, NC Children of JOHN BLACKMAN and TABITHA MASSINGALE are: i. JOHN5 BLACKMAN IV, b. Abt. 1770, Johnston Co., NC; d. Bet. 1822 - 1823; m. RACHAEL KILLINGSWORTH, January 04, 1792, Johnston County, North Carolina; b. Abt. 1775, Clark Co., Miss.; d. Abt. 1841. ii. WILLIAM BLACKMAN, b. Abt. 1768, Johnston Co., NC; d. Abt. 1833; m. NANCY JERNIGAN, Abt. 1795; b. Abt. 1777. iii. ARTHUR BLACKMAN, b. Abt. 1760, JOHNSTON, NC; d. Abt. 1829, J OHNSTON, NC; m. SARAH; b. 1770; d. 1833. Notes for ARTHUR BLACKMAN: !1. WILL BOOK I, JOHNSTON COUNTY, NC (FHL #019192) ================================================== Notes for ARTHUR BLACKMAN: Arthur was possibly the eldest son of John and Tabitha Blackman and had possibly already received his share from his father, as he only got a crosscut saw in the will. Arthur Blackman was at least 21 years old by 1799 when he listed 100 ac. of land and 1 poll tax in the tax records. In all his years of tax listing he only listed this 100 a \cres or 101 acres, sometimes. Arthur died by 1829 as widow Sally Blackman petitioned the court for her dower in the lands of Arthur Blackman deceased. She received 50 acres. Barzellae Blackman was appointed Admnistrator of his estate. During the years of listing tax, in 1813 Jeremiah Blackman listed taxes for Arthur Blackman, 101 acres, his father, in Josiah Adam's district. In 1814 Jeremiah Blackman again lists 101 acres for Arthur Blackman and 1 poll tax for himself and no poll for Arthur, meaning possibly that Arthur was over the age 50, limit for taxing polls. This 100 acres of land was deeded to Arthur Blackman in 1787 by John Blackman, on the south side of Mill Creek opposite the mill of John Blackman. Closely associated in the tax lists were Owen Blackman, Barzellae Blackman and Richard Hill Blackman. ================================================ Notes for SARAH: !1. Notes for JOHN BUNYAN KEEN: John Keen 1790-1866 Ga+ c1828 Great Grandparents of Dean Rusk , Former Sec. OF State ======================================= Notes for JOHN BUNYAN KEEN: In 1810, Jerusha is named in the will of her father. In 1822, John was listed as security with William Blackman for the bond of Arthur Blackman as administrator of his mother's will. John and Jerusha are named in a Johnston County, NC court record dated November 1826 for a deed of conveyance. Soon afterward they moved with their children to Georgia and settled in Henry County by 1830. In November 1833, John purchased land in Henry County (now Rockdale). In succeeding years he purchased adjoining acreage, part of which was still owned by the Keen family more than fifty years later. Many descendants of John and Jerusha lived in North Clayton, Henry, South DeKalb and Rockdale counties, and are buried in the cemeteries in these area. Many family members still reside in these areas also. In 1840, John and Jerusha lived in the 622nd District of northeastern Henry County. Their neighbors were families named Cook, Parker, Ray, Blackman, Stanley and Crow. John was an elder of the Flat Shoals Primitive Baptist Church. In that capacity, along with Edmund Blackman, John accepted land given by Eliaken Stanley in 1843 for the erection of a church building. According to the 1860 census, John and Jerusha lived alone, but near John Jr.'s family in the White House area. In 1865, John B. Keen, Justice of the Peace, performed the marriage of his nephew, John Bunyan Cook, and Mary Skelton in Henry County. On February 28, 1866, a petition was filed in ordinary court stating that John Keen Sr had recently died and Jerusha was awarded a year's support. She died a few years later. They were buried originally near their old homeplace in a pasture that is now called Parker-Stanley Cemetery, but were moved to Flat Shoals Cemetery in Henry County in 1917 when that place was threatened by road improvements and construction. To Terry Sims: Well right now, I put out the website to foster more widespread interest in this potentially phenomenal event. I feel real strongly that this might be something that can be repeated over the years. On the website, you can add any comments/suggestions as needed and I'll update it with the information provided to me by potential participants. The only thing is once I gather all this info, then what? I'm a techie and haven't had much experience planning large events. Can someone out there tell me if they've seriously considered meeting either virtually or face-to-face to plan various committees, etc. for this event? M. Page
Gail and Freda and any others: A few days back, I posted several E-mails to the NCJohnston Co List regarding what I knew about that had been published regarding (1) the possible marriage of Bethanah Lee to a William Ingram and (2) the documented marriage of Nancy Lee Johnson to a William Ingram in 1823. I was hoping that someone would respond with more documentation and/or corrections. But so far nothing. Please help. Here is how I put it together: Proven is: (1) Bethanah Lee did marry an Ingram and had died by 1835 with issue. This is documented in her father's 1835 Will where the heirs of Bethany Ingram had inherited already. (2) William Ingram did marry Nancy Lee Johnson in 1823. Documented by a Marriage Bond and in her father's 1823 Will. (3) Assumed to be proven is the birth and death dates of William Ingram, born 14 Mar 1790 and died 25 Apr 1860 Lowndes Co AL. These dates are so specific that they must be from a Tombstone, Family Bible, etc. but I do not know the source. (4) Assumed to be proven is the birth year and death date of Nancy Ingram, born 1796, and died April 12, 1856. Source of these specific dates are unknown to me. Also no place of death is given. Once again assume Thombston, Family Bible, etc. but do not know the source. Confusing: (1) Published data states that William Ingram and Nancy Lee Johnson Ingram were in Dallas Co AL by 1850 but William Ingram died in Lowndes Co AL. Likely they went first to Dallas Co AL and then to Lowndes Co AL. Would like to know for certain. Otherwise, it is possible that we have two different William Ingrams. Not Proven: (1) It is not proven by the data that I have that Bethanah Lee and Nancy Lee married the same Ingram, much less the same William Ingram. Is there some documentation of this? Not Known: (1) The ancestry of William Ingram who married Nancy Lee Johnson. Who is he? I hope that someone can help. I am particularly interested in William Ingram and/or the Ingram who married Bethanah Lee. Thoughts: Circumstantial evidence confirms that William Ingram married first Bethanah Lee and second Nancy Lee Johnson. This circumstancial evidence are the children and their dates of birth. I assume that a descendant(s) of William Ingram has reconstructed and documented in some way his children by two wives. The dates of the birth of his children support that the first three belonged to one wife and the remainder to Nancy Lee Johnson. If this is so then Bethanah Lee is a likely choice for William Ingram's first wife and the mother of his first three know children. I would very much like to know how the names and birth dates of William Ingram's children were reconstructed. What are the sources of this information? Any help would be appreciated. Franklin Ingram, Raleigh, NC
Margaret, I don't know if you have access to the Johnston Co. Library - Genea. Room, but there is a reference book available on the Creech families of Johnston Co. by James M. Creech. You will find your connection on page 70 of the book: "11. William James Creech b. 1834, served in the Civil War, entered Nov. 16, 1861. He married Nov. 17, 1853 Polly Massengill. She put in for a pension in 1901. (known son) (1) Herrin Creech m. Dec. 21, 1883 Nancy Lee." I hope this helps. Victor Edwards

I have an interest in the HILL line in Johnston Co. NC. My ggggrandmother was Sarah Hill. She first married Thomas Harrell Evans and at his death married Joel Clifton. When Clifton died she along with her grown EVANS sons migrated to Al, approximately 1854. If there is a connection with your HILL line I would appreciate any information you might care to share.
