Sounds like a useful idea. --------- Forwarded message ---------- From: "David Jones" <Davedrum@tesco.net> To: POWYS-L@rootsweb.com Date: Mon, 1 Jan 2001 00:36:25 -0000 Subject: Fiche Viewer Message-ID: <001f01c0738d$23181e20$bb498cd4@k62> To anyone wanting to read FICHE without a viewer: Make up a small light box with a low energy bulb and a diffused cover. (Mine is from an outside plastic lamp) Remove the eyepiece from an old pair of binoculars. Make a small ring of cardboard to fit in the eye end about 10mm deep, and glue in place. Place the eyepiece on the fiche (Eye end down) and read fiche through the wrong end of the eyepiece. Some experiment may be necessary. 3. Dear Bev, I'm sorry to take so long to reply, but I haven't had time to properly absorb your wonderful info until now. From their close association (various family members listed in the same bible record), I'd have to say that I believe that William & Kerney Sr. are definitely related somehow. From their ages (22 yrs difference) William could be an older brother or Kerney's father. I really need to dig into the land & probate records. Unfortuantely, at this time, I can't return your favor in kind as I'm just starting my research into this line. What little info I have I received from my uncle who was more interested in direct ancestors (which currently deadend at Kerney Sr.), while I want to dig deeper & fill in the siblings/spouses, etc. You've given me a good starting position for my research, for which I thank you very much. As I discover more I will share my info with you. Susan Michael Monroe, NC

I just "tuned in" to it and it is an enormous site., with major and "minor" languages. http://www.yourdictionary.com Betty Pace

I'm sure you'll hear from others much better at this than I am. Is your uncle from Johnston County? If so, I would recommend that you check his family church -- most of them have memorials to the WWII soldiers from that parish. My military history is not at all what it once was, and even then it wasn't much, but I believe that there are some records at Fort Bragg (which is in Cumberland County) that relate to the special forces (paratroopers) who were involved in the Normandy Invasion. My father's cousin, Gen. Bill Lee (from Harnett County) spearheaded that program and commanded those troops. His personal records are at the mansion in Dunn, but the official stuff is at Bragg. My uncle was in another regiment completely, but I know that his bunch still has reunions every so often, though he is coming up on 80 years of age. He was POW 18-plus months at Battle of the Bulge. My husband is a disabled Navy UDT/SEAL of the Vietnam Era. We regularly receive a publication from Disabled American Veterans (DAV). This publication regularly runs, at no cost, many ads seeking people who served with so-and-so. The other service organizations also run such ads. You can try this route if you need to by contacting any service organization, except VVA (Vietname Veterans of America) of course. Also, I don't know how it works in your state but in SC every county has a veterans affairs officer working with the American Legion to serve veterans. You could contact that office and get some better leads than I could possibly provide. I have a cousin who was a chaplain at Normandy and through Europe. He was the national chaplain of the American Legion. So is my POW uncle. At least where I grew up, everybody apparently joined the American Legion. That may be the best group to start with. Good luck in your search. Life is good.... annie
