We used to go over there and drive through one of the little towns, I think it was Robbins but it's been a long time. Each family has its own kiln, and they make a salt-glazed pottery according to their family's traditional designs. Along Highway 220(?) from Rockingham to Asheboro, there is a place called "Jugtown", where they started selling to tourists. There is a museum of their work at Seagrove. I've been told that they were able to make pottery because they live along the same line of kaolin/clay that runs through the lower Sand Hills from the phosphates mines in South Georgia. It would seem logical that the curator of the Potter's Museum would know about silversmiths throughout Eastern Tarheelia and could put you in touch with someone who knows about your family's work. > >Life is good... annie
One of the best sources is from The Smithfield Hearld , Smithfield is the county seat of Johnston County and is not biased. The subscription rates are reasonable, quarterally, semi- annual or annually. The paper is printed twice weekly, on Tuesdays and Fridays. The address is; The Smithfield Herald 125 South Fourth Street Smithfield, N. C. 27577 Tel. 919-934-2176 Fax. 919-989-7093 Sorry, they do not have an email address. From time to time , I will send in some obits. as my health allows. Pearl

Im interested in the PAGE family of Johnston Co. NC around 1800-1830. They left by 1830, does anyone have PAGE'S married into thier lines? Thank you Suzie
in response to the obit that pearl weaver sent to the list, and specifically the birthplace and parents, obits are such a great source of information. would it be possible to just list the names of the people who have died in Johnston County on a regular basis and indicate which newspaper we could check on-line for details? then other members could make note of these and send the brief info when they see one in their own newspapers and indicate which newspaper to go to. it would be helpful to include the newspaper's e-mail address. and depending on how much into your local paper you are, you can also pick up similar information from biographical articles on someone from johnston county or with JOCO ties. somebody may be able to contact a family member before they die! life is good... but pine pollen sucks annie

So far I have found two silversmiths in my North Carolina lines. I have been told of a book entitled something like "Artists of North Carolina" but this may not be the exact title. It may have a reference to one of my silversmiths, DAVID L. POOL (1813-1868Rowan). Does any one know of such a book? In the bibiliography of a book on early silver, I found a citing of: "The Silversmiths of North Carolina," published by the State Department of Archives and History, Raleigh, 1948. Does anyone know how I could get a copy of this book/pamphlet? I didn't know the Archives published things like this. NC Queries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NC/Johnston/2158 Surname: ------------------------- Hello Jerome, In the 1850 Census, Johnston County, NC, Sarah Godwin b. 1798 is living with her children, Elizabeth, 14, and Haywood, 11, born 1839. My greatgrandmother, Sally Kirby is in the household, 17 years of age. She was sent to live with Sarah Godwin after her father Jesse Kirby died in 1849. Sally Kirby married John Hawley. There is a marriage bond in Sampson County where a Sarah Hawley married an Edmund Godwin. (I've always wondered if this is the reason John Hawley (say) went to visit an aunt and met Sally Kiry.? Purely speculation. What do you think?
Posted on: Johnston Co. NC Queries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NC/Johnston/2157 Surname: PORTER ------------------------- Nicholas PORTER b. 1709 Surry County, Va and died in Johnston County, Nc. He was married to Elizabeth Farmer. Elizabeth was the daughter of Thomas and Agnes (Nicholson) FARMER. Nicholas and Elizabeth (Farmer) PORTER had 5 Children. Jeane PORTER, Elizabeth PORTER, Ann PORTER, Agnes PORTER, and Samuel PORTER. All of the children were born in Edgecombe, North Carolina and Nicholas and Elizabeth were also married in Edgecombe County, Nc. I am assuming that the PORTER family moved to Johnston County sometime after their son Samuel PORTER was born in 1742. Nicholas and Elizabeth both died around 1749 in Johnston County, Nc. I have a copy of Nicholas PORTER will dated Sept. 1749.I am assuming that the children were taken back to Edgecombe County after the death of their parents. I believe that this Samuel PORTER is the same Samuel PORTER of Halifax County/ Edgecombe Counties Nc. That this Samuel PORTER is my 4ggrandfather and Nicholas is my 5ggrandfather. Please if anyone is familiar with the PORTER or Farmer lines or either one of their children Please lets me know.Thank you

Hi to all. I have the obit for Cynthia Anne Milliner Sellers (w/o Alsey Sellers). 1/23/1897 Cynthia died near Goldsboro and it said the burial took place near Selma. The funeral was conducted by her Pastor J.F. Tuttle. I am trying to find out the name of her church. If someone could give me the name and address of the church I would appreciate it. I have not been able to find her grave in the Johnston or Wayne Co. Cemetery books. I have not been able to find Alsey Sellers either. I hope maybe the church is still around and they might have some kind of records. The obit said she was a member of the church for 40-50 years so this is a Baptist church that has been here since at least the 1850-1860's. Thanks Charlene Nix Deltona Florida
Can anyone tell me when she was born? and who her parents were? She married William Hinton Stewart born in 1842. They married abt. 1865. Larry Moore redbirdlm@hotmail.com
