Many of you have noticed that the Johnston Co. GenConnect boards have been down since last Friday. They are back now, but there are some problems with the Feb. posting. If you posted to these boards in Feb., please wait until they try to recover them. The GenConnect anoumcement is below. Thanks, Warren GenConnect User, Please note that recent GenConnect postings for portions of February 2001 are NOT currently archived on select boards. I just received a photocopy of a 1668 land grant from a cousin of mine. The land was granted to Isaac and Francis Delamare,in then Albemarle County. The deed was (re)recorded ,1789,in Pasquotank Co. "The said Land being due to the said Isaac and Francis Delamare for the Transportation for one (Pflon) or (Plon) for every fifty acres as appears upon Record under this Patent" I checked www.refdesk.com and a land term web site and found no mention of "Pflon" Psson or Plon. Would appreciate knowing what this word is and means. Kevin Kelly,St Louis researching Davis,Stokely,Delamare,Pasquotank Co and Pearce,McKinney,Davis in Johnston Co,Nc
I don't know about specific Johnston County records, but, generally speaking, the availability of birth records, per se, is unlikely. In my experience, information about an individual taken from a death/burial record is only as good as the person giving the information--especially when it pertains to the person's birth. Did the son die before the mother? Who was the person providing the information about his death? If he died first, she herself may have been the one to provide the information. In which case, analyzing the evidence may provide the answer. Have you looked for Briggs and Bullard in the 1790 census records? Even though this was before her birth, you may find a Briggs or Bullard family living near a Lowder family. This would also point to one name over the other. Just some ideas... As this is my first post to the Johnston Co. list, I'll mention some of my other connections: David Strickland (b 1805), son of Davis Strickland (son of Samuel and Mary) m 1834 Johnston Co. Sophia Stevens (b. 1819), possibly illegitimate dau of Martha "Patsy" Stevens, prob. dau of Benjamin Stevens and Alice "Alsey" Herring Stevens. The Clayton News-Star Wednesday, February 21, 2001 Author to speak to Historical Society Johnston County Genealogical and Historical Society invites you to join us on Feb. 20 for our monthly meeting at the Heritage Center at 7 p.m. The speaker will be M. Ruth Little, author of "Sticks and Stones: Three Centuries of North Carolina Gravestones." She will speak on monuments and the history of some of the graveyards in North Carolina. Warren Bagley presented the program at our January meeting about the "Johnston County Gazetteer" project the Society is undertaking. The purpose will be to try to summarize historic information on roads, rivers, creeks, schools, churches anything to which old deed references may be tied or that would be of a geographical historical interest. Many original references will be used (deed books, court minutes, topographic maps, etc..) to try to come up with reliable information. Another project that is being undertaken by the Society is the resurveying of the county's cemeteries. A detailed set of books was done from research done in the 1960's but the information in those needs to be updated as well as any unsurveyed cemeteries added. If you are interested in helping with any of our projects or if you have historic information that could assist us, -please contact Pat Goodwin, President, at 919-284-5016 or contact Warren Bagley at wtbagley@bellsouth.net. Thanks, Warren
Per Ann Massengil's suggestion, chat has been instituted on the Johnston County Reunion website at www.geocities.com/jcncheritage. Depending on folk's schedule, I'm thinking of having a chat on Wednesday of this week in the evening (after the dinner hour, of course). Ann...can we chat on this? And thank you to all the folks who contributed family websites and pictures. Those are next to be placed on the site. And as always, if you have anything you want to add pertaining to your family research (or someone else's for that matter), let me know..... M. Page
Good evening all Re: Bullard or Briggs family? I'm trying to find where I might find proof of my ggggg-grandmother's birth. The information I have inherited states that Zilpha Lowder (married name) was born in 1794 in Johnston County, NC--but I would like to find that where this is recorded. I'm not sure of her maiden name, as it's been recorded on cemetery records two different ways. Her own burial record: Parents are recorded James and Rachel Briggs Her son, John's, burial record: Parents are recorded as Zilpha Bullard and Jesse Lowder. This has caused some confusion in our records for a while. So--to sum up-- ;-) Can anyone tell me of any books or pamphlets or where I might find her birth recorded. Zilpha, born 1794--daughter of James and Rachel BULLARD or James and Rachel BRIGGS Thank you Eleen Robinson Evans
To the Nobles: I have limited time to respond to your query, but I suggest the following: Go to: http://members.tripod.com/~LeeHouse/Jlx-home.htm There you will find the following statements: John LEE, Esq. (JLX) of Johnston Co., NC (ca.1695-ca.1767)/ Welcome to the JLX Researcher's Group/ Over 100 "Researching Cousins" working together/ Over 10,000 Descendant names on file (& growing almost daily)/ Both "Team" & "Individual" research on specific goals There is a wealth of data at this site. You can also download a large GEDCOM file on John Lee X and his descendants down trough a number of generations. Unfortunately, there are errors in this work. These errors are hard to find and hard to correct because there is absolutely no documentation or sources cited. It seems strange to me that a group of researchers would devote such energy and time to a specific research project like this and provide no documentation or source data. Oh well, it will be a help to you just as it is. Also, the Johnston Co History Room or Genealogical Library has a huge collection of John Lee Esq research data. Several life-long Lee researchers, now deceased, compiled their Lee research before they died. These compilations are bound and in the Johnston Co History Room. These volumes do have documentation, sources, reasoning, evidence etc. In other words, you can track the ideas and reasoning of the researchers if you ever get a chance to see this material. There are also family stories, speculations, various sides of the debate, etc. The bad news is that I do not know where you can find this material except in Johnston Co, NC, but I suspect that other libraries have copies because some of these researchers lived in other states. They collaborated with each other over the years and even paid researchers in other places to help them find clues and evidence. I have found these to be great fun to read, even though I am not a Lee researcher except as the Lees touch my Ingram and Avera lines. The good news is that a few years back some present day Lee researchers culled this material and added their own data to develop a descendancy chart. Subsequently, they published introductory information about John Lee Esq along with three generations of his descendants. This was published in three volumes of the Johnston Co Genealogical and Historical Society Journal, which is reasonably available in various libraries. The dates of publication are: Summer 1996, Vol. 22. No 2, Fall 1996, Vol. 22 No 3, and Winter 1996, Vol. 22, No 4. The ISBN is 0737-4321. Unfortunately, this series also contains errors, but many are corrected in subsequent Volumes of the Journal as other Lee researchers found them and wrote in. This series contains no documentation or source citations either so the Journal shares this in common with the GEDCOM mentioned above. Also the Journal and the GEDCOM do not always agree with each other. Note, however, if I am not mistaken, I have shared with you in the past the data that I culled from these sources and several primary documents in the NC Archives about you specific interest in the two Lee women who married the William Ingram who went to AL. Good luck on your continued research. In Virginia L. and Oscar M. Bizzell's book on the Revolutionary War, several paragraphs are written about Dozier Thorton, Private, N. C. Militia, born 14 April 1755 in Lunenburg County, VA. He married Lucy Elizabeth HIll. Could this Dozier Thorton be the son of Mark Thorton (N.Carolina) who married Nancy Dozier? Any info on these Thortons would be most helpful? Betty Pace 1890 U.S. FEDERAL CENSUS FRAGMENT These records have been extracted from the remaining population schedules for the 1890 Federal Census, which was destroyed by a fire at the Commerce Department in Washington, DC on 10 January 1921. The surviving fragments consist of 1,233 pages or pieces, including enumerations for fragments of Alabama, the District of Columbia, Georgia, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, South Dakota, and Texas. The records of only 6,160 of the 62,979,766 people enumerated survived the fire. The original 1890 census enumerated people differently than ever before that time.
