the Oregon Archives have death certs from 1906 forward, but have not been able to find Ed's. I appreciate your reply. I also got a list in the index from another list member, and found another Edward, which was my first ed's son and was married to Helen...it has the cert number and everything...I am requesting that, but do not know if I can get it since he only died in 1975 and I am not a direct line decendent of his...he was my ggrandmothers brother. I feel that Oregon's archives are the best setup and run in the entire U.S....they have email reference request and they are so helpful...I have gotten so much help from them that we all know each other by name, and they probably hide when I email them!!! I wish other states would ask for the setup that Oregon has...it works soooo well.I am sending this post to a bunch of other lists i subscribe to so that others can have the e-mail address for the Oregon state archives if they have Oregon research to do... Obviously this is anecdotal, but when I was searching for my GGGF's grave site, I also found on my GGAunt's grave site: SUSAN ³SUDYE² McNEILL WIFE OF BEN WITHERS MAY 18, 1879 JULY 28 1934 My mom was surprised to learn "Susan" was on the gravestone, having only known her as Sudie (SUEdee). Of course, information on a gravestone isn't carved in...uh...I mean that there is no guarantee that the information on a gravestone is correct :-) Stewart > From: Ann Massengill/John Evans <nicojak@ftc-i.net> >> From: Ted Gurley <tgurley@veriomail.com> >> I have found this name in the JoCo area and Wayne Co. circa. 1890 - 1920. >> Any thought on why this was popular and how it was pronounced. >> It seems like it should be SUE - DEE. >> Ted > > Ann Massengill responds: > Hi, Ted. I have found this name in the JoCo area and Wayne Co. circa. 1890 - 1920. Any thought on why this was popular and how it was pronounced. It seems like it should be SUE - DEE. I'm sure someone will know. Ted

John T. Avera was my g-g grandfather. He was the father of Nell Jackson Avera (1866-1923), who married Frederick Jackson Williams (1854-1924). Frederick and Nell's son Carl Sasser Williams was my grandfather, who died long before I was born. If anybody can help me place this John T. in the Avera family tree, I'd appreciate the help. I'd also like to know the maiden name of his wife, Druzilla. Here's John Avera's will, filed for probate in Johnston Co., NC on 17 February 1923: "North Carolina Johnston County I, John T. Avera of the County and State aforesaid, being of sound mind but considering the uncertainty of my earthly existence do make and declare this my last will and testament. First, my executor hereinafter named shall give my body a suitable burial suitable to the wishes of my friends and relatives and pay all funeral expenses together with my just debts, and of the first moneys that shall come into his hands out of my estate. Second, I give and devise unto my beloved wife Druzilla Avera all the lands of which I may own or die possessed, wherein situate, to hold for herself during the term of her natural life, and after her death, I give and devise the same to my heir begotten on the body of the said Druzilla Avera. Third, I give and bequeth unto my beloved wife, Druzilla all my personal property of any description, as well as money and chosen in action (auction?) to her and to hold during the term of her natural life, and after her death to go to my heirs begotten upon her body. Fourth, I hereby constitute and appoint my trusted friend W. L. Brady my lawful executor to execute this my last will and testament according to the true interest and meaning of the same. In witness whereof, I the said Jno. T. Avera do hereunto set my hand and seal this 22 day of July, 1905. John T. Avera Signed, sealed and published and disclosed by the said John T. Avera to be his last will and testament in the presence of us, who at his request and in the presence of each other, do subscribe our names as witness thereto (test) Ed L. Abel (test) Sam T. Honeycutt That since the executor of the foregoing will W. L. Brady herein appointed executor has died, and in his place I appoint my trusted friend J. S. Is anyone familiar with a Simon Jones Burial ground? According to some information I have on my Stephenson and Elizabeth Flowers Godwin this is where they are buried. My understanding was that it was in Johnston Co. at least back in the late 1800s when they passed away. Anyone have any idea where it would be located today? Thanks. Shelly Mendenhall

My dad said that Charlie was from Smithfield, but he did not know for sure if Charlie was a policeman in Smithfield or not. I expect that the Clayton News and/or Smithfield Hearld would have stories and pictures of him during those years. I do not know any additional info on the Allen's.
