Does someone on this list have access to a cemetery book on Johnston County? I'm searching for a PETTUS or PITTES family (the parents or siblings of Elizabeth PETTUS). Elizabeth PETTUS (from the U. S. census and her grave marker) was born in NC in 1807. She married John GILES who (from the U. S. census and his grave marker) was born in NC in 1797. There were 3 PITTES marriages in NC (all in Johnston Co.). Sally PITTES and John DUPREE (1820), Darcas PITTES and Jesse KENNEDAY (1821), Elizabeth PITTES and John GILES (1828). I can't find where Elizabeth's parents or siblings were living. Maybe I can find where they're buried. (PITTES or PETTUS, John & Sally DUPREE, Jesse & Darcas KENNEDAY.) Posted on: Johnston Co. NC Queries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NC/Johnston/12201 Surname: RAINS, RAINES ------------------------- My gggrandfather JOHN RAINS was born about 1808 in NC. Family history is that JOHN's father or grandfather came from England and was to work for a man eight years to repay the cost of his ship passage -- I do not know the name of his father or grandfather. JOHN married ERRIKA and/or UNITY, b. abt 1810-1811 (his wife is listed as ERRIKA on 1850 census and as UNITY on 1860 and 1870 census records, with same year of birth). Sometime around 1839-1840, JOHN and his family were in Alabama, and in Mississippi by 1850. Living next to them in Itawamba County, MS., was the JOHN H. KENT family from NC. One RAINS daughter, PATSY (MARTHA)b. abt 1833 NC, married February 6, 1853, to JESSEE RAPER b. abt 1835 NC. Other RAINS children were: CYNTHIA (SENTHA)b. abt 1837 NC; OPALINE b. abt 1839 AL; OLIVER b. April, 1840, AL -- married September 17, 1865, to MARY CHILDERS BOREN; EDNA b. abt 1842 MS -- married December 5, 1861, to JOHN KENT b. abt. 1838; RANSOM H. b. abt 1845 MS; NANCY J. b. abt 1848 MS; NELLA (NELLIE) b. abt 1852 MS -- married November 15, 1874, to T.S. KENT The names OLIVER, RANSOM, PATSY, JOHN, and HENRY may be family names. OLIVER later named his sons JOHN HENRY CLIFFORD, JAMES H. C., JACE H. C., J. H. COLUMBUS, and GEORGE HUMPHREY (don't know if they ran out of "J" names or meant to spell "GEORGE" with a "J"). The names MONROE and MANSON were used by JOHN HENRY for his sons and supposedly they were also family names -- not sure which side. If any of this matches or connects with someone's line, please let me know.

NC Queries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NC/Johnston/12189 Surname: RAINS, RAINES ------------------------- Since UNITY is not a very common name, your message caught my attention. Do you know what year your UNITY was born, and who she married, if she married? I am searching for a gggrandmother whose name has been listed on census records as UNITY as well as ERRIKA. All I know is the census records state she was born in North Carolina in about 1810-1811, and we have reason to believe that they were from Johnston or Nash County, NC. Thanks, Peggy

Posted on: Johnston Co. NC Wills Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NC/JohnstonWill/10099 Surname: Strickland ------------------------- The Johnston County, N. C. Military Roll of Honor list a Samuel Strickland without any additional information. It also list a Samuel Stricklen (I would expect it to be Strickland) age 20, elisted 7/15/62, private, C Company, 5th Regiment, son of Bennett and also indicated a pension applied for. The pension records are only in Raleigh. I also have a portion of the Roster of Confererate Soldiers, written by William N. Rose, Jr. about 1900. It list a Sam Strickland enlisting on the same above date and same Company and Regiment. It indicated this person as missing on July 1, 64. Please remember, I do not have at this time the complete roster as above, so I can't be sure there is no other Strickland listed as was in the Military Roll of Honor. Hope this helps! Warren
