Thank you, John Clark In a message dated 4/5/01 10:26:43 PM, gbyerly@san.rr.com writes: The MATTHEW STRICKLAND you refer to is the son of WILLIAM STRICKLAND JR. NC Queries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NC/Johnston/12273 Surname: ------------------------- Re: the date of birth (DOB) on Social Security records -- the 1902 date is based on a range of evidence and is probably more reliable than the date on the application, which is only an allegation. The DOB on the SSDI is the date determined by SSA employees for entitlement to benefits. They used a standard that gave the most weight to the oldest and the most credible evidence. These days, the birth certificate is usually the most credible. Unfortunately, most southern states did not have statewide birth registration until after the turn of the 20th century. Individuals filing for Social Security benefits without birth certificates would have to produce other evidence, such as children's birth certificates, baptism records, military papers, and census records to prove their age. These records often showed DOBs that were discrepant and that had to be resolved by SSA employees.

Her father was James Eli Barbour, born in Johnston County in the 1880's. He died in Norfolk in 1937. Jim's parents were William R. Agrippa (Grip) Barber/our and Salina (Lina) Johnson. Grip was born in Johnston Co in 1844 and died between 1910 and 1920. Lina lived at least until 1920. Do you have these people in your database? I have not been able to definitely identify Grip's parents. Possibly Pulia/Purly since the 1850 census says he has a 6 year old son named William. Also since they are in Elevation Twp I am reasonably assured they are part of the Plyer Barber group.
