Thomas Toler states his father and mother are Thomas Toler and Mary Holden. I have one child Thomas Toler who names his father and mother below. Thomas and Mary Holden Toler have 11 children does anyone have any other children. Who was Thomas Toler's parents? Who was Mary Holden's parents. ?? Like any help I can get here. Tim Casey He is a son of Thomas and Mary (Holder) Toler, who were the parents of eleven children, of whom our subject was next to the youngest. Both the paternal and maternal ancestors were of Irish descent, and were pioneers of North Carolina. The father of our subject, who was a native of Wayne County, N. C., owned and operated a very large plantation in Johnson County, where he was a well-known and influential man. He was a soldier in the War of 1812, and for many years served as magistrate, taking an active part in politics and sympathizing with the Whig party. He died in Johnson County in 1849, his widow surviving until 1865.

John, I'm very interested in this memoir that you mention. The reason is very simple...my line descends from the MOSS line of VA, that migrated south thru NC to GA in the year 1784, and arrived in Wilkes Co. GA 1785-1787. The presence of several of my lines...in the Colonies dates back to just after the very first ships, and the memoirs might assist me in trying to find out some of their history. I had several lines of kin in Johnston Co. NC...which is why I subb to this list, and the surnames include: MOSS, WATKINS, BARBER, PATTON, ROSSER, WORTHING and VINSON [2 separate lines]. All date back into the mid to late 1600's in Colonial VA. Although I can't prove it...I think that the following surnames...BELINDEN [BELLENDEN/VALENTINE] and CAMPBELL were also there. So far...I haven't found evidence of them in NC...so probably between 1784-1790. I just find it most odd...that any Quaker father would allow his daughter to marry someone that he himself wasn't well acquainted with and none of my traditions have any indications that Reace WATKINS didn't like his son-n-law...Levi CAMPBELL [m. Sarah WATKINS]. *S* Also too...one of our CAMPBELL's, Laurany, married a man who was born in NC...named Sherwood DAVIS, and I find the name of Adeil Sherwood most intriguing. The reason is that most of my lines...used earlier surnames in their naming pattern, and often for over 4-5 generations. *S* If you would be so kind as to forward a copy of the memoir to me...I'd be most grateful. Is anyone researching JAMES HALL from Johnston Co. NC In 1820 census: 110001 00001 1 m 0-9 1 m 10-15 1 m 45+ 1 f 45+ This James Hall apparently lives next door to an ALSEY PACE, and on the other side of James Hall is a Biddy Edlacel(sp?). In 1820 in Johnston Co. NC, Alsey Pace married ZILPHA HALL (b. abt 1800 in Wake Co., NC). I can't help but feel there is some family connection between Zilpha Hall Pace and the 1820 James Hall. I found this in some papers that I had collected, if some of you subscribers could give me your opinion it would be appreciated. I believe this to be William Toler spelling is Taller. Could I assume this. If correct then Bath Co was Eastern NC then changed to Craven which then changed to Johnston then Dobbs, then Wayne Co NC. I believe this to be the earliest Toler ancestor in my line. This would prove that a William Toler was there before 1754. This may be a different William Toler as the date of 1714 my ancestor William Toler died about 1784 which would make him 71 years old by the date but then these are two different William Toler's. Is anyone on the list researching the Fellow/ Fellows surname ? My brick wall. Would like to find the parents of William M. Fellows , 1850 age 35 , Louisiana Census says b. in North Carolina. The 1870 Louisiana , age 62 , says b. in South Carolina. Death location unknown , assume Louisiana. John
I am looking for the parents of Zilpha Hall, b. 1798-1800 in Wake or Chatham Co., NC. In 1820 in Johnston Co. NC she married my Alsey Pace (1785-after 1880). They moved to Guilford Co., NC, where Alsey disappeared around 1835. She was shown with their children in the 1850 Guilford Co. NC census and later moved with two sons to Mecklenburg Co., where she died sometime after the 1880 census. All or most of these (below) are the children of Zilpha Hall Pace, a family destitute and on the rolls of the Wardens of the Poor in Guilford Co., NC. PACE ORPHAN APPRENTICE BONDS - GUILFORD CO., NC - WITH MASTER ABNER - age 16. On 8/23/1837 to Hiatt & Jean (saddle trade)--MY LINE ABSALOM - age 19 on 8/17/1840. On 8/17/1840 to William Jean (harness trade) EDY - female - age 13 on 6/21/1841. On 8/18/1841 to David C. Sullivan (weaver?) GEO. WASHINGTON (called "JOHNSON/JOHNSTON" - no age. On 5/16/53 to Wyatt Erwin LIVELY - female - age 8 on 4/19/1839. On 8/22/1839 to James Thom NEEDHAM - about 8. On 8/22/1839 to James Thom (farmer) WISEMAN - age 12 - On 11/23/1837 to Christopher Hiatt (saddle trade) YOUNG - male - age 13 - On 8/18/1847 to Jonathan Armfield YOUNG - MALE - age 16 on 8/16/1850 - On 5/20/1850 to Isaac Armfield (cabinet maker) (I would bet that Jonathan Armfield died and Isaac took over the apprentice bond for YOUNG PACE) I am told that to be called an orphan, only the father need be dead/deserted/missing; the mother might still be in the county but unable to support. My ABNER PACE m. in Guilford Co. in 1843, and went to Rowan Co., NC following his marriage to JULIA ANN REED. He was the son of Alsey Pace and Zilpha Hall, m. 1820 in Johnston Co., NC. I know that at least David, Young, Needham were also children of this couple. NEEDHAM PACE and YOUNG PACE moved to Mecklenburg Co., NC around 1855 where they married; they took with them a ZILPHA PACE (b.1800 Chatham/Wake Co., NC), their mother, and her retarded son DAVID. Needham Pace (a carriage maker) moved to Mississippi (Lafayette Beat) by the 1880 census; his wife was Mary/Margaret Myers.. Young Pace died in Mecklenburg Co., NC, as did his wife Nancy Walls Pace. LIVELY PACE married William N. LITHCOE in 1850 in Guilford Co., NC, and EDNEY PACE married Thomas OZMENT Jr. in 1841, and EDITH PACE married Thomas H. GARDNER in Guilford in 1849. Most (if not all) of these Pace "orphans" were the children of ALSEY & ZILPHA HALL PACE (m. 1820 in Johnston Co., NC). I have established that at least some of them were the children of that marriage. The family was shown receiving aid from the Wardens of the Poor in Guilford Co., NC, in the 1840s, perhaps longer. . 1840 Guilford Co., NC census shows ZILPHA PACE ON P. 261. I know that my Abner would not have been at home since he (and others) were apprenticed before 1840. So I looked at Paces apprenticed after 1840. I don't know the exact date of the census, but it is early summer or spring. p.261 PACE, ZILPHA 1 m. (under 5) David? 1 m. (5-10) Young?--app. 8/1847 1 m. (10-15) ? 1 f. This is in the Southern Div. of Guilford Co., NC. Next door to Ziltha/Zelpha Pace is Isaac Armfield (cabinet maker) and his apprentice YOUNG PACE, age 15 (b.1835). This Young Pace, plus his apparent brother Needham Pace , will take Ziltha/Zelpha Pace and her son David with them to Mecklenburg Co., NC by 1860, and she lives with Young Pace there until her death around1890..
