    1. Baker in Johnston
    2. Paula Baker
    3. I'm reseaching Bakers from Greene Co who may have had ties to Johnston, Wilson, and Wayne. In 1850 there were six Baker men living in Greene Co. James, Elijah, Willis, Bryant, Jesse, and William. Bryant was the only one who owned land. The others were coopers by trade. Elijah Baker is a Johnston Co name. Jesse Baker was a primitive Baptist preacher who had moved to Wilson by 1860. Elijah Baker was married to Mariah Hobbs in 1850. William was married to a Fereby. James in 1850 had married the widow of Abram Moye of Greene County. I don't think they had children. That is my line. James had 3 children living with him in 1850 James Hines Baker, Elizabeth Baker, and Cordelia. I'll work on all this and send it in a better form later. Thomas Britt appears in the 1790 Bertie Co, NC Census. Don’t find any listing for him in the 1800 NC Census, Listed again in the 1810 Bertie Co., NC Census. He shows up in the 1820 Sampson Co, NC Census then in the 1830 Wayne Co, NC Census (Roll: 12 Page: 505) (Age 56).The 1840 Johnston Co, NC Census (Roll: 363 Page: 248) list him as age 66. I have not found Rigdon Britt by name in any census data. Based on the age of his first child, William (b. 1833) I estimate that he and Wilmouth Langston were married about 1832, also based on Wilmoth being born in 1809 I estimate that Rigdon was born about between 1795 and 1808. He is named as deceased in his fathers will, therefore he had died before the will was written in 1859 also he does not appear with his wife Wilmouth (Willey) Britt in the 1850 Johnston Co. census, as Wilmouth’s last child, Alley Britt, was born about 1847 it would appear that Rigdon died between 1847 and 1850. Patsy Jane Britt married Samuel Lee, Jr. on January 16, 1837 (Ref: http://www.johnstonnc.com/jc_hc_marriagebond_name.cfm), therefore I estimate she was born about 1817. I have not found her and Samuel Lee, Jr. in the Johnston Co. census. Rebecca (Beca) Mariah Britt is living with her brother Henry Britt in the 1850 and the 1860 Johnston Co. census with her age given as 42 in 1860. She married John Gregory on May 29, 1838 (Ref: http://www.johnstonnc.com/jc_hc_marriagebond_name.cfm) Dave

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/gVB.2ACI/2820.2.2.1.1 Message Board Post: It is certain that Martha King Britt was the mother of Blackman, Pashann (Patience?), Henry, and possibly some other children. Martha King Britt, wife of Thomas Britt, is named in her father or mother's will (I cannot remember which one) -- Martha was the daughter of William King of Bertie County who was a descendent of Michael King of Nansemond County, VA. Three of Blackmon Britts' daughters married three King brothers in the area around Grantham (Wayne County). It is not very far from Bentonville. The men they married were related somehow to Martha King Britt, possibly distant cousins. Thomas and Martha Britt first show up in the 1840 Johnston County Census. I am not sure but I think I could not locate them in Bertie County in 1820 or 1830. I am just wondering if Thomas went to Wayne County or Sampson, and then ended up in Johnston in 1840. Everything that I have seen by people says that all of the children were born in Bertie County, but I am not so sure. Martha King Britt probably died after 1815 (Pashann b. 1812, Blackman b. 1813, and Henry b. 1815) and then there are 9 children born between 1825 and 1845. Some were most assuredly born in Johnston County, but where were the rest born? I am just wondering if his second wife was named Martha Ridgon or else Martha Jenkins. I have found the surname of Ridgon in Bertie County. Martha King Britt also had a first cousin named Martha, referred to as Patsy Ann (she was the daughter of Charles King, William's brother). I believe (not certain) that she married a Rigdon Jenkins in Bertie County. Does your brother-in-law have anyone in his family who can shed some light on this matter? My research indicates that Thomas served in the War of 1812.

The 1850 Johnston Co. census has Martha (don’t know her maiden name) listed as 59 (b. 1791) , therefore it appears that you are correct in assuming that this is not the Martha King that Thomas married in Bertie Co. in 1792, and she is the mother several of Thomas's children. Also, that she was most likely born in 1772. There is a record of them being married in Bertie County. It seems likely that the Martha Britt listed in 1850 in the Census is not the same Martha King Britt that Thomas married in 1793. If she was born in 1772, this would have made her 48 when she had her youngest son. Also, my dates for at least the three oldest children, is earlier than the NC census. Pashann, b. 1812, Blackmon, b. 1813, and Henry b. 1815. The 1880 Federal Census lists Blackmon as being 67 years old, which would make him having been born in 1813. Do you know the maiden name of the Martha Britt listed? I believe that most of the children were from a second marriage to someone also named Martha, a pretty common name. How are you related to Thomas Britt? Thanks!
