    1. [NCJACKSO] Genealogy Workshop
    2. Genealogist Reynolds via
    3. The North Carolina Genealogical Society and the Forsyth County Genealogical Society Present “Digging Deeper into Your Family History” With Michael D. Lacopo, DVM Saturday, June 20, 2015 9:00 AM–4:00 PM – Registration 9:00 AM – 9:30 AM $42 for NCGS or FCGS members - $52 for non-members Price includes lunch. The workshop will be held at the Knollwood Baptist Church, 330 Knollwood Street, Winston-Salem NC 27104 More about Dr. Lacopo may be found at http://www.Roots4U.com The full-day workshop will include the following four lectures: “Deconstructing Your Family Tree: Re-evaluating the evidence.” When information passed on from researcher to researcher doesn’t “add up” it’s time to tear down the walls and rebuild anew. This methodology lecture shows how erroneous conclusions can sneak into our research uncontested. This lecture is especially pertinent today with so many family trees that get cut and pasted into our own research. “More than the Census: Our Families Did Exist Between those 10-Year Intervals” This lecture will show the researcher that it is important to identify our ancestors’ whereabouts in as many local records as possible. A lot can happen in ten years! If you don’t look harder, you won’t find them. “Incorporating Social History into Your Research” Family history should be more than names and dates. What motivated our ancestors? Why did they migrate? Who did they interact with? How do social customs of another era affect our research? Social history and its bearing on genealogical research will be covered and a “must-read” bibliography for serious researchers will be discussed. “She Came from Nowhere” – A Case Study Approach to a Difficult Genealogy Problem”. This lecture illustrates the joys and pitfalls of Virginia research as well as employing a problem-solving approach utilizing social history, female research, and family analysis to identify the parents of Elizabeth Stith, the ancestor “from nowhere”. Please register and pay online at the NCGS website – www.ncgenealogy.org OR download and print the registration form and mail it with your payment to NCGS Summer Workshop, PO Box 30815, Raleigh, NC 27622-0815. To take advantage of member pricing, you may first join NCGS by visiting the membership section of the website. Note that only registrations received on or before 10 June 2015 are guaranteed lunch and the workshop packet. Any changes, including those due to inclement weather conditions, will be posted on the NCGS website. Note that a limited number of rooms for out-of-town attendees will be held at the Best Western Plus Hanes Mall Hotel in Winston-Salem, NC. Please contact the NCGS about availability.

Author: mw080109 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.northcarolina.counties.jackson/2839/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Penland and Underwood are among surnames given to Cherokee during census. Miniard lived in Brasstown, North Carolina, which is in Cherokee County, North Carolina. As the lore goes, Miniard married our great, or great-great grandmother, Jane Penland, Cherokee. The history goes cold because surnames were newly introduced to the Cherokee. Unfortunately, at the outset, the names were only used at census, and could be changed based on the roll taker. When I entered my great-grandmother's name, Laura Oma Dean, her father was listed as Christian Razor Dean, and her mother was Haseltine E. Carson. On the website shahall.com I found that Larkin Dean and Omiaha Robinson had 4 children, all sons: Adam Dean born 02 July 1846, Christian Razor, James Dean, and David Dean. I know very little of my great-grandmother's ancestry, but I lived next door to her as a child, and can give you information about her 6 children and their families if you are interested. Laura married Arthur Nelson Bryson. They lived in Jackson County, NC. I cannot find the names of the parents of Larkin Dean nor Omiaha Robinson, and would like to have that information if you can supply it. My Grandfather was James F. Rice. Born 31May,1915, Died 28 March,1968. I have his draft card and a copy of his death certificate. I went to the cemetery at Pleasant Grove back in June. I called one of the numbers on the sign for the caretakers. The man I spoke to said his sister would be able to help me more. I left a USO card with my name in it on my Grandfathers grave. I didn't have flowers or a flag to put on his grave. I know nothing about him other than stories I have heard about him. They may be true, they may not be. Irregardless he was my Grandfather and I feel deeply connected to him and this side of my family. It is almost like this side of the family has been kept hidden from me. Please email me at grunt68@me.com or contact me via phone at 912-271-1604. Thank you for any assistance in the near future.
