Hi! I thought I would let y'all know that I have a lot of Carolina families represented in my database at my web site for the Denton and related families. There are over 15,000 people in the database, plus a lot of other information on the site. If any of you have Dentons in your lines, I would love to hear from you! There are also some down-loadable gedcom files for families other than Denton that I have in my at-home database, such as Hunt, Moore, Plumlee, Cooper, Chastain, O'Dell, French, Shipman, Baker and Huff. All of these families intersect in some way with the Dentons, but have a great deal more information in the individual gedcoms than is on the database at the site. There is a lot of other information on the site as well that you might find interesting, as well. The address is: http://www.acun.com/dentons I hope you find something of value! Blessings! Looking for any info on the following family. 1 Joseph LLOYD b abt 1785 in N C ? d abt 1864 in Madison, Fl + Unknown 2 William S. LLOYD b Feb 27, 1811 in Hyde Co N C, d March 11, 1854 in Mt. Meigs, Montgomery Co, Ala. 2nd Wife of Joseph LLOYD + Abigail DELAUGHTER in Edgefield Co. S C 2 Joseph Pleiades LLOYD + Ann Booker ZACKARY in Madison, Fl I originally thought Joseph LLOYD was born in S C, but have just discovered a write-up from the Edgefield Advertiser dated April 13, 1854 which states that "Reverend William S. Lloyd died March 11, 1854 at Mt. Megis. He was born in Hyde Co, N C, Feb 27,1811. With his parents he removed at an life to Edgefield Dist.S C" This info, now has me looking in Hyde Co, N C. I know William S. to be the son Of Joseph, as they bought property in Edgefield and was mentioned in Josephs will as "son Wm S Lloyd, late of Alabama. Any leads or suggestions would be appreciated. We are searching for information on MASSEY BENSON, who we know from sound family tradition came from Accomack Co., VA. to Hyde Co., NC. From 1790 we have this record: MASSEY BENSON (Power of Attorney) Nov 1790 Hyde Deed Book D&E.362 dated 20 Aug 1790 to: Cason Gibbs "...me hereunto moving have ...appointed my trusted friend Cason Gibbs Esquire...my...attorney. To carry on a lawsuit begun by ABNER NEAL against Massey Benson about land on which I now live." Witness: Nathan Selby, Wm Watson, Abram Jones. We will appreciate any information on this lawsuit. [The 1790 census printed edition: Abner Neale [sic] is in Craven County on page 134 at bottom of column 2; in Hyde, Massey is on page 138, column 2 near top; next after him is Cason Gibbs, and next after Cason is Abram Jones; Nathan Selby page 138, column 3, half way down; and Wm Watson is about 13 names below Selby. All are eastern Hyde names.] 2nd: we seek confirmation of our Massey's relations in VA. We know that Massey Benson had a wife Elizabeth _______; and that he had 3 daughters who married in NC - Rebecca (married John Berry, Sr., died 1858), Sarah/Sallie (married Robertson Fisher, Jr., died 1835), and Matilda (married William Carawan Williamson). We seek confirmation of Massey's identification with the following Accomack family: MASSAY (sic) BENSON (sic) will 27 Aug 1780 - 26 Sep 1780: No wife mentioned; sons Major, George, daughters Rebeckah and Nancy; and Massey(sic), son, was named executor, but refused to act, so Ezekiel Benston (sic) qualified. Might this son, Massey, be our Massey in Hyde? If so, this could explain why he refused to act - he would not have been in Accomac, not even in VA. We are sure in our instincts that this has to be so. But that is not documentary proof. And, since we are disciplined genealogical historians rather than collectors of vague hearsay, we seek confirmation based on sound evidence. There could have been two different Massey Bensons of the same generation in or from Accomac, though highly unlikely. All help and suggestions are appreciated and we will respond promptly. --Merlin S. Berry

Researching my ggf Edward COOPER and our family that moved from Martin County to Hyde County between 1860 and 1870. Samuel ROSE was the father of Rebecca ROSE, the second wife of my gf Sylvanus COOPER. The 1860 Census shows Samuel ROSE, age 28, living with his wife Amanda (SMITH), age 27, and two sons: William A., age 8 and Edward, age 5 in Swan Quarter, Hyde County. Also shown living with Samuel in that Census is Lucretia SMITH, age 56. It is reasonable to assume that Lucretia SMITH is the mother of Amanda. The 1910 Census for my gf Sylvanus COOPER, now living in Fairfield Twp. Hyde County, again shows Samuel ROSE, now age 78, living with Sylvanus and his wife Rebecca (ROSE), as "Father-in-Law" along with Sylvanus' three children, and a nephew Carroll. Any assistance in researching these family line would be most appreciated and I would be happy to share information. Ruffin R Cooper rrcooper@erols.com
The Hyde County Cemeteries book lists the parents of my ggf Sylvanus COOPER as "Freddie" COOPER and Caroline SAWYER. I have good reason to believe that my ggf's given name is really Edward, not "Freddie". I have found an 1850 Census record for Isaac SAWYER, age 54, living in Carrituck District , Hyde County. There is no wife listed for Isaac. The following persons are listed as living with him; Caroline, age 19; Zachariah, age 19; Hezakiah, age 13; Hardy, age 12; Albert, age 2; and Welthy A., age 15. My ggf, Sylvanus COOPER was born in April 1855. This Caroline SAWYER (age 19 in 1850) would have been 24 when my ggf was born. The close proximity (I guess) of where they lived and the ages make it possible that this Caroline SAWYER is my ggm, and Isaac is her father. I would really appreciate any assistance in following up this possibility, and would be more than happy to share information. Ruffin R Cooper rrcooper@erols.com
I am researching the wife of Edward Lee Mann 1860-1948. Her name is Annie E. (1855-1899) and last name is unknown. She is buried with Edward in Amety Cemetary. Edward was born in Manns Harbor and died in Middleton. She and Edward had two children (that I know of) George 1879-1968 and Mattie Gertrude 1882-1887. Any infomration or resources is appreciated.
Lillian, Do you have the Hyde County History book. The names there might give some clue to who might have some records - maybe Elder A.E. Brooks family for Star of Zion. But no names are given for Faithful Hannah. --Merlin ==== In a message dated 98-08-09 23:01:51 EDT, you write: << Subj: [NCHYDE-L] CHURCH RECORDS Date: 98-08-09 23:01:51 EDT From: VINNETTA@worldnet.att.net (LILLIAN BARNES) Reply-to: vinnetta@worldnet.att.net (LILLIAN BARNES) To: NCHYDE-L@rootsweb.com Does anyone know the availability of church records in Hyde County? Dear Members of the NCHYDE Mailing List, Earlier today a message sent to the list by one of our subscribers was "bounced" by Rootsweb.com, our host server. This means that their system could not resend the message to the other list members because it wasn't in plain text. Please read the below message from Rootsweb and save it for future reference. And please send only plain text messages to the list. We have more than twenty subscribers, many of whom are experienced Hyde County researchers, so if anyone has any queries, please submit them to the list. Thanks, John Listhost ---------------------------------------------------------------- >From NCHYDE-L-request@rootsweb.com Hi -- The message you submitted to this list wasn't sent to the list subscribers. RootsWeb accepts only plain text mail. That means that HTML mail, attachments, ``enriched text'', and a few other formats can't be sent to RootsWeb mailing lists. You can post your message if you send it in plain text; turn off the ``Post in HTML'' or ``Enriched Text'' features of your mail reader, or don't use any attachments. See http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/listowners/html-off.htm for instructions on turning off HTML in most of the popular mail programs, or ask your ISP's technical support line for help. We've had to institute this policy because of the problems that accompany these fancy mail formats. Some people don't have mail programs that are capable of processing the special file formats. Even among those who do, different mail programs handle these special formats in very different and confusing ways. HTML messages pose special problems to our digested mailing lists. Most of all, HTML-ified mail and attachments place a considerable burden on RootsWeb's overworked machines. All in all, mail in this format produces a lot of problems for RootsWeb's servers and subscribers, so we find it's best just to use plain text. -- The RootsWeb staff

Gary, I noticed you posted a notice on the new Hyde Co. mailing list about the Ballance family. Was Aaron Clafton Ballance a Jr.? His father was Aaron C. Ballance (Mar 1866-3 Apr 1901) but wasn't sure if his middle name was Clafton. Aaron C. Ballance also married a Gibbs, Margaret "Maggie" Simmons Gibbs, who was the daughter of James M. Gibbs and Sabrah Jane Midyette. The father of Aaron C. Ballance, (Sr.?) was Henderson Ballance who was born circa 1817 and died before 1887. Henderson Ballance married twice. His second wife was Georgia Ann Gibbs. So it seems you come from a long line of Gibbs'--- grandmother, g-grandmother and possibly a gg-grandmother. I have more information on the Midyette line if you're interested. Kay Lynn Midgett Sheppard
Just joined the list server for Hyde county Geneaology. Looking forward to it. I have done some preliminary research on my family tree. I have a direct link for Ballance back to 1835 and on my grandmothers side (Gibbs) to 1787 - all in Hyde County. My grandfather was Aaron Clafton Ballance and grandmother was Florence Gibbs Ballance. Please feel free to share any information or send me any requests that I can help with on the Ballance side or even Gibbs. Gary Ballance, Greensboro NC gary.ballance@ci.greensboro.nc.us
My ancestors (Joseph Magound/McGowen/McGowan) settled in Hyde County in the late 1700s, moving there from Tyrrell County. Although my branch of the family later moved to Tennessee and then Missouri, many of the rest remained in Hyde County and elsewhere in North Carolina. I correspond regularly with John McGowan, the Hyde County GenWeb Coordinator, and would be interested in hearing from other McGowan kin. Bob Parrish
