Hello, I am hoping someone can tell me Jane's maiden name. She was born in 1828 and married Augustus Latham probably in Hyde Co. Augustus Latham was born 4 Feb 1823 and died 21 May 1877. I am assuming that Jane died before he did because she is not mentioned in his will which was probated in Beaufort Co. Any help would be appreciated. Respectfully, donna brand higgins dbrand@hpnc.com Texas

Folks, I need help with the Hyde County Veterans. As most of you know, I have posted rosters of those who served in the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and the Civil War. If you know any additions or corrections to these rosters, please let me know. I am now compiling rosters of our veterans who have served in the conflicts since the Civil War, i.e. the Spanish-American War, WW I, WW II, Korea, Viet Nam, and the Persian Gulf. Please send me information you may have on any veterans who served in the U.S. military in any of these conflicts. Also, anyone who would like to volunteer to help with this project, please contact me. Thanks, John
Folks, for any with Tyrrell County connections, please svisit the Tyrrell Co., NCGENWEB site, which is one of the very best County web sites online. John - - - - - - - Hi All - Continuing the tradition of bringing the Tyrrell County Court House to your home, please check out the Tyrrell County home page. A new item has been added. Gordon Basnight and I are transcribing the Tyrrell County Marriage Licenses from 1868 to 1920. This includes an index to brides, grooms, mothers and fathers. You can read the entire license on line. This is another ongoing project that will be added to periodically. Right now we have 1868 - 1880 and 1884 - 1889 on line with 1868 - 1880 indexed. Check it out and give me any suggestions for improvement you may have. Charley Barnes - - - - - - -

I am Helen Brooks Shaw, born in North Charleston, SC, moved back to this area after having lived in Washington, D.C., Iceland, Germany, then Florida for 25 years. My father was born in Leechville, NC. His father's families were all from Hyde Co., his mother's families were from Beaufort Co. My mother was from Rockingham Co., NC (Morgans and Carters). My mother taught school in Belhaven, probably 1906-07 until she married in 1908. They moved to the Charleston area in 1912. Researching: Brooks, Farrow, Foreman, Martin, Jordon. Muse, Davis, Daw, Gurganus, Winfield. Problems: (1) Origins of Stephen Brooks who died in 1776, buried in Mattamuskeet Lake, Hyde Co. (He did NOT come from the Henry Brooks family of Conn.) What happened to his son William? (2) What were the names of the sons of Isaac Brooks, b. 1754, d. abt 1799? Others from eastern NC who moved to the Charleston area in the early 1900's: Ballance, Holland, Spruill, Cherry, Mayo, Tuxbury, Speight, Davenport, Swain, Felton, Eure. I may be able to get some info on some of them, but hurry since they are leaving us fast.
Does anyone have a 1830 or 1840 census index. I am looking for a John Wesley King or Wesley King he was born about 1808. Thanks Lillian
Folks, I sent this to the List several days ago, but is seems it didn't go through. If you have already received it, please delete. John ------------------------------------------- Friends & Cousins, As List Manager, I have been lax in my duties, and will try to remedy that shortly. First of all, Rootsweb, which is the administrator for this list and many others, and gives up free space on the web for it, has a few "rules," as follows: No GEDCOM files No large databases No Attachments No shouting (all Caps) No Flame Wars Please Do Not post virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political announcements, current events, items for sale (unless it is a book dealing with greater Hyde County), off subject personal messages, flames, etc. (i.e. Spam), to the List. Spam, GEDCOM files, Attachments, etc. crash the server, thus we all suffer. On the setup page for a list, Rootsweb gives the List Manager the option of setting the maximun limit, in bytes, of how large each message can be. They suggest 20,000 bytes, which I have selected. That's about two typed pages. So may I suggest that in the future, if anyone has a large amount of interesting information to share with other subscribers, please write a description or outline of it, send it to the List and ask anyone who is interested in receiving more of the same to please let you know, "privately," i.e., send an email to you personally and not the list. I believe that this will serve the purpose of sharing your information with those who are interested and at the same time not filling up anyones mail box who doesn't want it. This is a new, small list and some of you are relatively new to Mailing Lists and the Internet itself. So please, let's stick to genealogical subjects and be patient with one another. I have been on other lists on which Flame Wars erupted and were almost totally destroyed. Be patient with each other. Some of the list members are experienced, others are not; but we were all new at one time. :) ** Use Your Delete Keys ** if the message is of no interest to you. (There is no longer any writing on my delete key, having been rubbed off from constant use. :-) One other item, if I may. I have set our List up as an Open List, which means anyone can send a message to the list, but only Subscribers can receive the messages. A Closed List is when only Subscribers can send and receive messages. However, one of the drawbacks of an Open List is that, on rare occasions, unscrupulous persons send unwanted, non-genealogical messages to the List, such as Business Advertisements, Pyramid schemes and unfortunately messages about sex related web sites. These messages are commonly called SPAM, and are the bane of all lists. If anyone receives such a message through the List, please notify me at once. As a matter of fact, I will leave it up to you, the subscribers, as to whether our List should be Open or Closed. If you have an opinion, please let me know *Privately*, not on the List. For any comments or questions, please contact me "privately." John B. McGowan jmack@carolina.net NCHYDE-L Mailing List http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/NCHYDE-L.HTM

Hi Everyone, I have a different perspective about the posting of the Hollowell information. Here is a quote from a researcher on an African-American based list. "The biggest most difficult challenge in researching African-American genealogy is tracing and documenting our slave ancestory. Many European-American families today find it difficult to reveal the possibility their ancestors may have been slave owners. They don't realize that racial cooperation during this important genealogical research of both our histories is profoundly healing to all of us. I just wanted to again thank you for the invaluable information you have given me on this research journey of my mulatto Wannamaker family history. Without knowing which Wannamaker family line held slaves, I would have had to look for a needle in a haystack." I realize Vickki was looking for more information regarding her own family, but if I were a African-American researching Hollowell the naming of the Hollowell slaves in wills would be invaluable. I cannot begin to tell you the number of reseach hours it would take to obtain this type of information. I know of many African-American researchers who have worked for years trying to locate the families who owned their ancestors. Many are having the problem of slaves being sold, given as gifts, or willed to daughters (prior to their marriage), resulting in a change of surname. In essence, if you have this type of valuable information, please share it. I feel the very nature of most genealogist allows them to want to help someone else. I know I when I receive a "thank you", it makes me feel good inside. Okay, I'm getting off the soapbox now. Vicki; My comment to you was hardly "very negative". In SIG's like this one it is the practice to "post" information or a question by providing the essential details. I belong to some SIG's that are "moderated" and your "post" would have been "snipped". Most people are scanning more than one SIG as well as other e-mail. So, it is a courtesy to try to be succinct. Then, if someone responds, you can send more "posts" to clarify your relationship and interests, and then arrange to send them your bulk data privately. I have had exchanges that were much larger than yours (Tree's of 4900 people), using direct e-mail connections.
