Folks, Below is the URL addresswhich was on the Waddell List (one of my Mother's lines) for anyone interested in early migration trails in the South. As some of you know, one of my interests is the migration of Hyde families to Tennessee in the early 1800's, in particular to White Co., TN, which included a branch of my McGowans, my gggg grandmother, Delacy Jarvis and some of her children; also Mason, Midgett, Gibbs, Fisher, Bridgman, Swindell, Hudson and other families. While this is a very good site and will get even better as it developes, I have yet to find a map or any information on the route these families would have taken from Hyde Co., NC to White Co., TN. Anyone who can help with this, please let me know. John jmack@carolina.net ______________________________ Sue <morgana@ghg.net> Well folks, I have put together a simple resource page with some of the most useful of links that we've discussed over the months for maps, historical stuff, and other useful things for starting your research...check it out...there are lots of early map links and other stuff...it is not complete...but after a number of people wondering about maps, I thought it was time we had a central location...I will be improving it with time, but its something to get us going. the address: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~south1/trails1.htm ______________________________
Folks, Below is a query which I'm posting on the Hyde County Query Page. John ----------------------------------------- FLOWERS DCSCOTT103@aol.com Peggy Scott Jan. 2, 1999 I am trying to research my mother's family. I know very little as everyone has passed on. My grandparents came from Pamlico County. My grandfather's name was George Brown FLOWERS. His father I believe was Zion FLOWERS. I have found a Zion B. FLOWERS listed as filing for a pension for Hyde County for 1885-1901. I have requested North Carolina State Archives to send me the information. As you can see, I'm not to sure of what I'm doing. I'm not even sure what would be the best possible avenue to take. If you have any suggestions, please let me know. My home address is 2833 Wesley Road, Chesapeake, VA 23323. Thank you for all your help! -------------------------------------- AUSTIN / GASKINS sanders@texasonline.net Lynn Sanders January 5, 1999 I am seeking the parents of Cornelius AUSTIN (1832-1884), married Mary Harlow GASKINS. I have the family history from here. I think that his mother's name was Esther DERR from Virginia but that is questionable. I would appreciate any help. I believe that his name shows on the 1850 Hyde County Census as being 17 yr. of age. Thanks for any assistance. --------------------------------------

Well, John and Kay, you are both the Volunteer(s) of the year, and years. Even if I were not still toiling away at employment, I would not have the energy to put out so much. The first is for the long awaited (by me) Search Engine for the Hyde Co., NCGenWeb Pages. It will search our web site only. But I urge everyone not to use it as a substitute for reading the pages; I'm sure you'll miss a lot if you do. This is a Beta-test version on the search engine and we are among the first trying it out, so please let me know if you have any problems. Please remember that names were ofter spelled as they sounded to the clerk recording the information. If you don't find a name by its usual spelling, try some variations. The second page has to do with volunteers, and I think everyone will agree with me. Enjoy, John >>

Seeking information on the following: Cate COLLINGS (COLLINS) , an "Indian Woman" servant of William GIBBS, Constable of Arrowmuskeet. March 1765 Hyde County Court Minutes and Orphans Book 2, on motion of Patrick Gordon ordered that Wm. GIBBS "shew" cause if he has any, why Cate COLLINGS (COLLINS) an Indian woman, now in his service should not be set free. June Court 1765 - ordered that Wm. GIBBS have timely notice that he show cause why Cate COLLINGS (COLLINS), an Indian woman be not set at liberty. Also believe her possible descendants (all free people of color) were Susannah b. before 1776, Charity b. circa 1800, Horatio, and Nancy. Both Horatio and Nancy were cited for illegal marriages to slaves. Horatio had "taken up" with a slave named Winney property of Henry Lucas in Hyde County, April 1863. Nancy, had "taken up" with a slave named Ellick, property of Ananias Sadler, October 1842. I need to know the outcome of all the above proceedings, and any other information regarding these people. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Lillian

Hi folks, In looking into a possible relative with a colorful name, Sorrowful Spencer, I need to pursue all possible leads since he has turned out to be very elusive in the records. Sorrowful's mother was Nancy Spencer (maiden name unknown). R.S. Spencer has advised me that Sorrowful's aunt (Nancy's sister) was Sinar Sadler. Although it's not clear whether Sadler was her married name or maiden name, her first name really baffles me. I realize names are often difficult to recognize due to the poor spelling in many wills, deeds, etc., but I can't make sense of this one and have found no other examples of it. The closest I have come is to consider a loose mispronunication of Cedar, but that seems to usually be a male name. Does anyone have any knowledge or ideas about the name Sinar to help in finding where she is hidden among the Sadlers somewhere? Thanks! - Jim Spencer jspencer@notes.cc.bellcore.com

The Index to Vital Statistics - Hyde County; 1877 - 1958, lists my gf Sylvanus COOPER as having died in Carrituck on October 19, 1920. His father is shown as N. COOPER and his mother as Carolyn SAWYER. It shows the entry as in Book 5, Page 17. I live in Maryland. Can anyone tell me how to contact the place where his death certificate is located and how to get a copy. Thank you, Ruffin R Cooper rrcooper@erols.com
NOTICE TO ALL SUBSCRIBERS When I set up the Hyde County Mailing List, I let it be an "open" list, that is anyone could send messages to the list whether or not they were subscribers. Unfortunately, an "open" list allows "spammers" to send unwanted messages to the list. (For those who do not know what a "spammer" is, he is the Internet version of the telemarketer.) Even worse, an "open" list allows ANYONE to send the subscribers ANYTHING, no matter how objectionable. Our list has not been bothered too much thus far, but other lists are complaining of receiving many unwanted messages from nonsubscribers. The solution to this problem is quite simple. The List Manager can set up the software to reject any messages that do not come from a subscriber. This would only affect subscribers who use more than one email account where they subscribe from one account, but sometimes send messages from their other account. The server does not know the second email address, so the message will be kicked back to the sender so they will know whenever that happens. They can either send the message from their subscribed account or also subscribe from their second email address. This probably would not be a problem very often or for very many people. I have decided to make the NCHYDE List a "closed" list to prevent "spamming" and other unwanted and possibly objectionable material. As I explained above, this NOT affect very many of our subscribers and you should NOT worry about it. By the way, NO ONE gets your email address. I try not to give anyone's address out without asking them first. Of course someone can subscribe to the list and copy down the addresses of those of us who contribute, but that's usually too much work for spammers. I don't like having to take this action and would prefer an open list. As usual, there are always a few people out there who mess things up for the rest of us. If anyone has objections or comments to my action, plesse email me privately. I hope everyone will enjoy a very Happy Thanksgiving. I always look forward to the delicious oyster dressing and other great food, oh, and being with the family. :) John McGowan List Manager --------------------------------------------------------
