    1. [NCHYDE-L] HAPPY99.EXE VIRUS
    2. Folks, I discourage the reporting of virus alarms on this list because most of them are hoaxes, however there is now one, a worm, called Happy99.exe, which is spread by email attachments and possibly in the text of the message. The perplexing thing about Happy99 is that the person sending it probably doesn't even know that they are. Its safe to say, "do not" open anything with the name Happy99. Below are several messages, from various lists for listowners and from the rootsweb-help list, which will explain a little about it. There are several web sites which will check your systems for free. I've used antivirus.com: The one for Netscape users is: http://housecall.antivirus.com/netscape.html The one for MSExplorer users is: http://housecall.antivirus.com/explorer.html John ---------------------------- What is going on was explained in the post I made to the list last night with the information from the Semantec Website--this "worm" was sent as an e-mail spam and through an attachment in the Newsgroups. BTW, a "worm" or "trojan horse" is a bit different than a virus. A virus replicates once it has infected a host computer. A worm does not replicate but can be just as harmful since it invades the computer by setting up its *hidden* program that works in the background to accomplish whatever the purpose of this hidden program is--many of these trojans are "password stealers" and even though this particular one doesn't appear to have that as a part of its goals--I would advise anyone infected with any trojan to change the passwords they are using. It certainly can't hurt to do so and play safe. If the trojan is a password stealer as I mentioned above yes it can use your e-mail and have full access to your account--using it to send out spam or anything else the thief wants to use it for--which is how I suspect some of this "new" rash of spam coming from AOL is being sent out. In the case of the Happy99.exe worm it would appear that the program itself that it installs on your computer sends out this encoded program file without the user knowing it is being done. ______________________________ The telling line is: >>>begin 644 Happy99.exe Your correspondent has been infected with the "HAPPY99" email virus. You need to direct her to some good anti-virus software, to have her disinfect her machine. I recommend F-PROT, free DOS/DOS-window version with full power from http://www.datafellows.com . I have used it in the past to REMOVE some nasites that IBM AntiVirus, Norton, ThunderByte and MacAfee wouldn't touch. ______________________________ It can only infect the recipient if they downloaded it and executed it. Just receiving it as gibberish tacked onto an e-mail (in its encoded form) shouldn't be able to infect the recipient's computer. ______________________________ I copied this directly from the email posted to my list... I've had quite a time with this Happy99 virus. Whatever you do, DON'T OPEN THE DARN THING!! Delete it if you get it. If you open it, it puts files in your Windows/System folder and it attaches a copy of itself to any outgoing email. It even keeps a notepad file listing all the people you sent the virus to. I got a copy of this early in the game before I knew what it was. If you opened this file, follow these instructions: 2 pages that describe getting rid of the Happy99.exe virus. http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Heights/3652/SKA.HTM or http://www.datafellows.com/v-descs/ska.htm ______________________________________________________ I found I had acquired this same virus by innocently opening a Happy99.exe attachment link at the end of a friend's email. He didn't realize he was infected. I read a little about this virus, and sent a test email to myself. Sure enough! The message contained the .exe link at the end. It also attaches itself to newsgroup messages as well. I was able to remove (I hope) the thing by following directions at the following site: http://www.msnbc.com/news/235662.asp The instructions are geared to Windows users. I since sent some more test messages to myself, and the virus seems to have gone away. Hope this helps someone. ______________________________ As long as you don't execute or open (click on) the Happy99.exe link, you can't get "infected". If you do click on it, it will display a small window with a fireworks display. Chances then are your system may be infected. Again, a test email to yourself is a good way to check. ______________________________ HAPPY99.EXE VIRUS Description: This is a worm program, NOT a virus. This program has reportedly been received through email spamming and USENET newsgroup posting. The file is usually named HAPPY99.EXE in the email or article attachment. When being executed, the program also opens a window entitled "Happy New Year 1999 !!" showing a firework display to disguise its other actions. The program copies itself as SKA.EXE and extracts a DLL that it carries as SKA.DLL into WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. It also modifies WSOCK32.DLL in WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory and copies the original WSOCK32.DLL into WSOCK32.SKA. WSOCK32.DLL handles internet-connectivity in Windows 95 and 98. The modification to WSOCK32.DLL allows the worm routine to be triggered when a connect or send activity is detected. When such online activity occurs, the modified code loads the worm's SKA.DLL. This SKA.DLL creates a new email or a new article with UUENCODED HAPPY99.EXE inserted into the email or article. It then sends this email or posts this article. If WSOCK32.DLL is in use when the worm tries to modify it (i.e. a user is online), the worm adds a registry entry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce=SKA.EXE The registry entry loads the worm the next time Windows start. Removing the worm manually: 1.delete WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SKA.EXE 2.delete WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SKA.DLL 3.replace WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WSOCK32.DLL with WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WSOCK32.SKA 4.delete the downloaded file, usually named HAPPY99.EXE Safe Computing: This worm and other trojan-horse type programs demonstrate the need to practice safe computing. One should not execute any executable-file attachment (i.e. EXE, SHS, MS Word or MS Excel file) that comes from an email or a newsgroup article from an unknown or a untrusted source. Norton AntiVirus users can protect themselves from this worm by downloading the virus definitions updates released on Jan 28, 1999 or later either through LiveUpdate or from the following webpage: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/download.html ________________________ To Check to see if you have been HIT with this virus use your FIND FILES or FOLDERS Search under START button, and look for these files in your system. SKA.EXE SKA.DLL WSOCK32.SKA WINSOCK32.SKA Check for any file ending in .ska, by searching for *.ska If you find these files in your system go to the antivirus providers (Symantec is good), (Dr. Solomons) websites and search for the antivirus program specified for this virus WORM. All viruses listed in the Virus description pages can be detected and removed with Data Fellows Anti-virus and Data Security software. NAME: Win32/Ska.A ALIAS: Happy99, WSOCK32.SKA, SKA.EXE, I-Worm.Happy, PE_SKA SIZE: 10000 Win32/Ska.A is a Win32-based e-mail and newsgroup worm. It displays fireworks when executed first time as Happy99.exe. (Normally this file arrives as an e- mail attachment to a particular PC, or it is downloaded from a newsgroup.) When executed first time, it creates SKA.EXE and SKA.DLL in the system directory. SKA.EXE is a copy of HAPPY99.EXE. SKA.DLL is packed inside SKA.EXE. After this Ska creates a copy of WSOCK32.DLL as WSOCK32.SKA in the system directory. Then it tries to patch WSOCK32.DLL so that its export entries for two functions will point to new routines (to the worm's own functions) inside the patched WSOCK32.DLL. If WSOCK32.DLL is in use, Ska.A modifies the registry's RunOnce entry to execute SKA.EXE during next boot-up. (When executed as SKA.EXE it does not display the firework, just tries to patch WSCOK32.DLL until it is not used.) "Connect" and "Send" exports are patched in WSOCK32.DLL. Thus the worm is able to see if the local user has any activity on network. When "Connect" or "Send" APIs are called, Ska loads its SKA.DLL containing two exports: "news" and "mail". Then it spams itself to the same newsgroups or same e-mail addresses where the user was posting or mailing to. It maps SKA.EXE to memory and converts it to uuencoded format and mails an additional e-mail or newsgroup post with the same header information as the original message but containing no text but just an attachment called Happy99.exe. Therefore Happy99 is not limited like the Win32/Parvo virus which is unable to use a particular news server when the user does not have access to it. The worm also maintains a list of addresses it has posted a copy of itself. This is stored in a file called LISTE.SKA. (The number of entries are limited in this file.) The worm contains the following encrytped text which is not displayed: Is it a virus, a worm, a trojan? MOUT-MOUT Hybrid (c) Spanska 1999. The mail header of the manipulated mails will contain a new field called "X- Spanska: YES". Normally this header field is not visible to receivers of the message. Since the worm does not check WSOCK32.DLL's attribute, it can not patch it if it is set to read only. ______________________________

Also, GenConnect has Global Search to aid in your research. I have set up these Boards mainly because noone else would, however I really don't have the time to maintain our web site and others I manage, do research for them which takes up a lot of time, manage the Mailing Lists, etc., so I urge any Carawan or Stokesbury researchers to come forward and assist me. Please. If any other family group would like to have a Surname Board set up, I will try to help them do so. John

    1. [NCHYDE-L] NC Baptist Records
    2. Folks, For anyone researching NC Baptist records. John ______________________________ Baptist Indexes at Wake Forest The Z. Smith Reynolds Library on the campus of Wake Forest University in lovely Winston-Salem, North Carolina has been building a marvelous collection of North Carolina Baptist records for years, and through the magic of the World Wide Web, now allows some preliminary searches of these records by researchers anywhere in the world. The online access currently includes searches in two indexes. The Baptist Church Records Index is an alphabetic listing of Z. Smith Reynolds holdings, arranged by the name of the church. Each entry here gives the name and location of the church, the time period covered, and the size of the collection. Each also has a short summary of the type of information available from that congregation and a reference number. Also available is a personal name index to individuals mentioned in the pages of the Bibilical Recorder. This index is divided into four chronologic groupings: 1834-1839, 1845-1846, 1992 and 1993. Each entry here has the full name as it appears in the Bibilical Recorder, the date it appeared, and a reference number allowing you to locate the original edition of the Bibilical Recorder in which the name appeared. In some cases, the names include a notation of the context in which they appeared in the Bibilical Recorder. While there is an email link included allowing you to contact the staff of the library, if at all possible you will want to visit the campus yourself. Not only will this give you the opportunity to become familiar with the wonderful collection of Baptist records in the Z. Smith Reynolds Library, but you will also be able to enjoy one of the more beautiful regions of the United States. Resources: The Z. 1. [NCHYDE-L] NCROOTS - Genealogical Forgeries
    2. Folks, This is an interesting message posted to the NCROOTS Miliing List from Harold Oliver on the subject of Genealogical Forgeries. Please remember to check the sources for any information downloaded from the Internet, or received from anywhere else, for that matter. John - ---------------------------- NCROOTS-D Digest Volume 99 : Issue 44 Today's Topics: #1 [NCROOTS-L] ANJOU Forgeries [First Families <firstfamilies@link] ______________________________ Hello Everyone I have been asked to reply to some questions concerning our previous postings about the Gustave ANJOU forgeries and possibly clear up some confusion. First let us all understand something about Gustave ANJOU (1863-1942) born in Sweden, and after serving a prison term there for forgery, he came to this country in 1890. ANJOU turned out many "genealogies" for those who could pay his fee of $9,000 and up His report took aprox. 3 weeks and included a coat of arms, surname history, etc. There is no great money in producing a printed genealogy and ANJOU found an easier way to become very wealthy. The reports were in manuscript form and were ment for his client. There was never any thought at this time of our history that everything in the "genealogy" could be verified and since the more he produced, the more his fees while each completed "genealogy" would lead to additional clients through the false lines. In later life, when the Genealogy Bubble burst, he produced many lines and sold them by mail at reduced prices, So there are many out there especially those of the English common names and it appears as if he found the German and Dutch lines were difficult for outsiders to trace so he excelled with them. All of the "genealogies" were written around existing records that were gathered from the client and through obvious sources that could be proved. However, ANJOU then placed wills, births, deaths etc. that were his inventions, into various lines and then continued up another line that had many proven sources. A client was so overwhelmed with data that the false entries were accepted without question for the most part. It wasn't until later years that it was determined that ALL of Anjou's works were fraudulent and each and every entry must be searched and proven by original sources. At times he would tie lines throughout Europe by creating his own parishes and then using that as a source for wills, births, deaths etc., all false. He would also list non existing church records he "found" in established true parishes. Now we can trace those records. At the time they were introduced it was most difficult. If you have lines that are listed on our web site the first thing you will want to do is have someone copy the manuscript at it's location to make it available for research. Then determine the line. You will never determine a false entry just from lookin at it and each entry must be researched. Many original manuscripts have found their way into public hands and information contained within them have been passed on through the years by trusting writers. Be very careful of all entries that bring a collateral line into a genealogy. You will not find the normal factor of a lot of missing maiden names with ANJOU , he made sure they all had maiden names connecting to lines that had many proven sources. Male births will appear with sources to parents (starting another line) who never had children or who had proven children but his birth was never found. I urge you all to read the data we have on our web site at; http://www.linkline.com/personal/xymox/ We direct you to sources for additional reading through the "Genealogical Journal" published by the Utah Genealogical Association. Their internet address is; http://www.infouga.org/ The Genealogical Journal Volume 19 Numbers 1 and 2 of 1991 contains six articles on various genealogy frauds including two fine ones on Gustave Anjou. I hope this helps and makes you aware that there is much information out there. Some of it created by frauds. We will cover some of these people from time to time. When ever you receive a piece of information, ask yourself "Where did this come from?". Make it a point to source everything back to its original source. If an item is not sourced, you have nothing but a PROBABLE and you must not follow further until you can prove it. It is sad to say but we all have spent much time researching lines that are not ours. Also another point. NO FAMILY HISTORY IS A SOURCE. Only the primary sourced information within the History may be considered as reliable. If any of you come across anything written by an ANJOU, please call it to our attention so we may inform those whose lines it touches and they in turn can trace down the problem entries. The best to you all and happy hunting. Harold Oliver Director America's First Families ______________________________
