Hi John: This hurricane came near me down here in Florida and the wind was not very strong, but there was a lot of rain. I know NC does not need more rain. The house I was born in in Windsor was flooded up to the peak of the roof. I just hope this new storm goes by quickly and does not hang around to drop much rain. Here we go again. Everyone please keep safe. John
Folks, Ron Dailey has a new web site (below) which may interest some of you. John - ----------------------------------------- John, I have finally gotten my web-site up for the Northeast Colony of the NC Mayflower Society. Since it covers Hyde County, I thought you may be interested and could put a link on the Hyde County NCGenWeb page. It is located at: http://users.rootsweb.com/~ncnecsmd/welcome.html Thanks. - Ron Dailey - -----------------------------------------
Folks, Below is an announcement for web space where you can post your GEDCOMs. John - ------------------------------------------------------------------- * * * * * ROOTSWEB'S WORLDCONNECT PROJECT We are proud to announce the BETA TEST of the RootsWeb WorldConnect Project. Now you can upload, edit, delete and download to others your GEDCOMs on RootsWeb. We have developed GEDCOM software that is the most advanced on the Web to provide you with unprecedented control over your posted GEDCOMs. Key features include the ability to: o Upload a GEDCOM file generated by any of the major genealogy software applications WITHOUT first converting it to HTML. o Edit or delete your GEDCOMs as well as change the display or download options at any time. o Link the GEDCOM to your own home page. o Screen or remove information about living individuals from the GEDCOM. o Link Post-Em notes both from the GEDCOM originator and other RootsWeb users by attaching to the record of a particular individual. This capability is similar to the implementation of Post-Ems in RootsWeb's Social Security Death Index. o Link a GEDCOM to other GEDCOMs using Post-Ems. o Allow RootsWeb users to download subsets (portions) of the original GEDCOM starting with a specific person and choosing either ancestors or descendants. o Display GEDCOMs online in highly flexible ways. We think that this display capability is where RootsWeb WorldConnect Project really shines. Unlike with certain other Web sites, you have full control over your GEDCOM. You can change or remove it completely at any time and RootsWeb will never burn it onto a CD-ROM or charge others to access it. Check out this new capability at <http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igmuser.cgi>. Search for individuals listed in uploaded GEDCOMs at <http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi>. Beat the crowds. Upload your GEDCOM now, but please remember that this is a beta test. We will change features of the offering based upon your feedback. You can expect that there will be malfunctions, problems, delays, etc. during this test. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding. Submit your complaints and suggestions for improvements to the RootsWeb GEDCOM Suggestions Board at <http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/gedcom>. You might also want to thank Randy Winch, the author of this wonderful new RootsWeb feature. He has devoted months to this project. Kudos to Randy! * * * FREE PAGES PROGRESS REPORT. So far the beta test of unlimited free Web site space on RootsWeb is going extremely well. As of Tuesday evening, October 12, 1999, we had received and fulfilled 1,143 requests. Consider moving your Web sites to RootsWeb and tell your friends. We particularly welcome genealogy and historical societies. To see the complete Free Pages announcement, please click on <http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/press/freepages.html> FREEPAGES Directory (users' pages at FREEPAGES): <http://communities.rootsweb.com/free.html> * * *
Folks, The below announcement may be of interest to some of you wanting web space on which to place you family history. I have no further information. Contact the URLs at Rootsweb below. The major drawbace, in my opinion, is that the web sites will have Rootsweb advertisements at the tops of the pages. John - ---------------------------------------------------- RootsWeb Announces Beta Test Of Unlimited Free Web Site Space On October 7, 1999, RootsWeb started to provide unlimited free Web site space to all RootsWeb users. A user may maintain multiple Web sites on RootsWeb at no charge, each containing literally hundreds of megabytes of material. The initial rollout of this program is a beta test. We expect that problems will arise and ask that you have patience with us as we solve them. To the best of our knowledge, this offer is unprecedented in two ways. First, no major Web space provider offers more than 25 megabytes of free Web space. Second, each RootsWeb webmaster may use such Web space to host multiple Web sites, with each such Web site located in a different section on RootsWeb. For example, a user with multiple interests may locate Web sites in different RootsWeb communities, such as genealogy, crafts, military history, etc., or locate multiple Web sites in the same community. Other sites may have one or both of these features, but if they do, we have not heard about it. This offer is particularly aimed at encouraging our users to post genealogical information that, owing to its storage and bandwidth requirements, has been prohibitively expensive to bring on line. Examples include large collections of photographs and scanned documents. We are sure that you will come up with many uses which we have not considered. (We encourage you not to place GEDCOMs in this Web space, as soon we will announce a better GEDCOM posting and editing solution.) The Fine Print: 1. This is a beta test. We will change features of the offering based upon your feedback. You can expect that there will be malfunctions, problems, delays, etc. in this beta test. Please be understanding and please provide your complaints and suggestions for improvements to the RootsWeb HelpDesk at http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/help.cgi/ 2. Commercial advertising banners will appear at the top and, possibly, at the bottom of each Web page. These banners will require no programming by webmasters. Simply upload your Web site to RootsWeb and the banners will appear automatically. Unlike free Web space provided by other major Web space providers, there will be no annoying interstitial "popup" advertisements on your Web site. 3. We will provide free Web space for any non-commercial use that, in our sole judgement, is not offensive to other RootsWeb users (for example, pornography, bomb formulas, excessively spicy recipes, any site that makes fun of the RootsWeb CEO, etc.). If you are interested in locating a commercial Web site on RootsWeb, please contact us at < rrti@rootsweb.com > and we will discuss other arrangements. 4. Webmasters may locate their Web sites in whatever RootsWeb communities they feel are appropriate. We suggest that Webmasters building Web sites that do not obviously fit into any of the existing RootsWeb interest area communities place those Web sites in a miscellaneous area we will be providing, and then move them into appropriate interest area communities as such communities form. RootsWeb reserves the right, in its sole judgement, to determine whether a Web site has been located in an inappropriate community. 5. Webmasters may choose their own account names as part of the registration process. We will allocate account names on a first come, first served basis. 6. At present, we cannot support non-rootsweb.com domain names. For the non-technical among us, this means that all account names must end in rootsweb.com. 7. Free Web space may be used only for publicly accessible material and not for online backup. 8. We ask that webmasters intending to use more than 100 megabytes of space indicate the amount of space that they require so that we can properly configure their accounts. Please make a realistic estimate. If you need more space later, we will provide it. Index of Users' Webpages : An index of the webpages our users have created, is available at the address shown below. Please check it often as new listings are continually being added. http://communities.rootsweb.com/free.html Requesting A Freepages Account : To obtain your free Web space, please fill out the request form at : http://cgi.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/acctform.cgi (select the "Freepages Account" option). Please allow us up to two weeks to process your request, as we expect an initial surge of demand. We will process requests as quickly as possible on a first come, first served basis. Frequently Asked Questions : Question: What is the difference between homepages and freepages? Answer: Banners. The costs associated with hosting freepages is offset by advertising revenues we receive from the banners appearing on all freepages. If you are a contributor at the Sponsor Plus level or higher, one of your benefits is having a homepage account. Homepages are not bannered as a portion of your contribution offsets the costs associated with hosting your homepage (the balance goes towards your other benefits, to add new resources and tools for your use, to pay for bandwidth and equipment, etc.). Question: I filled out a request form, why didn't I get a freepage account? Answer: Generally it is because the wrong request form was selected -- you may have been among those that submitted a request using the option for a homepage account (the first option on the page) instead of a freepage account. If you requested a homepage account, and you are not a contributor at the Sponsor Plus level or higher, your request would have been turned down. You should resubmit your request, selecting the "Freepages Account" option. The request form is at http://cgi.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/acctform.cgi - ----------------------------------------------------
Folks, Rootsweb is hosting a new web site, Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness, on which volunteers will do lookups in various counties around the country. The URL address is below. John - ----------------------------------------- ROOTSWEB REVIEW: RootsWeb's Genealogy News * * * * * RANDOM ACTS OF GENEALOGICAL KINDNESS (RAOGK) wishes to thank RootsWeb for hosting this volunteer project. The site has a new and easier to remember URL: <http://raogk.rootsweb.com/>. Since its inception in March of 1999 RAOGK has grown to more than 1,500 volunteers in the United States, Canada, and a few other countries. Its volunteers offer to do the "legwork" in the area in which they live for those who do not live nearby or who are unable to visit the locality - for just basic copying and mailing costs. These acts of kindness range from looking up and copying documents in county courthouses to taking digital photographs of a tombstone. * * * * *

You can submit photos in several ways: (1) Scan them yourself or have them scanned locally to a floppy disk (preferred method) as a .GIF or .JPG image. You can then transmit them as an attachment to an email or send the disk thru the U.S. Postal Service. Disks will not be returned so make yourself a copy or save it to your harddrive. We cannot be responsible for the loss or damage of your photos sent through the mail. All disks, xerox copies and photos that are mailed thru the U.S. Postal Service should be enclosed in a rigid envelope to avoid bending. Clearly write "DO NOT BEND" and "PHOTOGRAPHS" on the outside of the envelope. Folks, I don't know about you, but I still remember my first hurricane Down Home when I was a small child. I hid under the feather bed. :-) At the top of the Hyde Home Page, I have a photo of a Hurricane. Click on it and it will take you to our Weather Page, from which you can access the National Hurricane Center, the NWS at Havelock, NC and several TV stations weather pages. Sort of a storm center.
