    1. [NCHYDE] PAF 4.0 available free.
    2. Folks, The below announcement was on one of the mailing lists today. If you use the older version of PAF or are in need of a new genealogical program, then this will be of interest. Also, if you haven't already used the huge database at the LDS web site, Family Search, you really should give it a try. The URL is below. John - --------------------------------- For those who started out with PAF in the early days only to switch to one of the Windows based programs that have become widely available to purchase, you should visit the LDS website and check out the availability for free of their brand new Windows-based PAF 4.0. You can even download the complete Users guide, also free. Because 4.0 is free they do not provide technical support. Also, if you purchase a copy of their new form printing software for $10 you can download for free an updated and greatly expanded version of that program! It can even print Fan-Charts! If you still have your old PAF the data from it will be transferred to 4.0 during installation! The new program will even print out in Bookform if you want it to and ancestry charts, etc. You don't have to already have PAF in order to get this. Check it out! The website is at: http://www.familysearch.org. On their homepage click on Order Family History Resources. - ---------------------------------

    1. [NCHYDE] Accomack Co., VA - LOOKUPS
    2. Folks, For those of you whose ancestor came from Accomac County, Virginia, this lookup offer might prove helpful. John ______________________________ LOWER-DELMARVA-ROOTS-D Digest Volume 99 : Issue 360 Today's Topics: #8 Accomack Lookup Offer 1600s [<Janmim@aol.com>] ______________________________ Fellow Delmarva Researchers: Since so many of you have been helpful to me, I am offering to do lookups in two compilations by Stratton Nottingham that I will have for the next two weeks: Accomack Tithables 1663-1695. These are the tax lists, I believe for each year. Certificates and Rights, Accomack County, Virginia 1663-1709. These are the lists of people transported, by whom and how much land that individual was granted for helping populate the Eastern Shore. PLEASE ONLY RESPOND WITH AN EMAIL USING THE ABOVE SUBJECT. Sometimes my delete key works overtime if I don't recognize the name. ALSO, Some names are very common. Please supply first names whenever possible. Finally, please be patient. I imagine I will receive a number of responses. I have a Question though. The Tithables book indicates how many tithes each person had, but does not give an indication of what calculations were used in reaching that total. Does anyone know??? 1. [NCHYDE] New Book Announcement
    2. New Book on History of Lake Mattamuskeet The Mattamuskeet Foundation, in cooperation with Arcadia Publishing of Charleston, S.C., has just released a new 128-page soft cover book entitled Lake Mattamuskeet: New Holland and Hyde County. The book, written by the foundation's executive director, Dr. Lewis Forrest, is a fundraising tool for the nonprofit organization whose mission is to engage in research and educational activities to preserve, publish, and otherwise "tell the stories" of the rich history and ecology of Lake Mattamuskeet and the surrounding areas of eastern North Carolina. The 25-year story of the Mattamuskeet Drainage District, from 1909 to 1934, is the central focus of the book. The development projects in the reclaimed lake bed were became the "New Holland project" because of the similarity of the engineering designs of land reclamation projects in the Netherlands. Three private companies attempted to develop the reclaimed lake bed for residential and agricultural use, and each gave up their attempt without achieving their dreams. There are also chapters on the Civilian Conservation Corps Camp at Lake Mattamuskeet and the history of Mattamuskeet Lodge. The book can be ordered directly from: The Mattamuskeet Foundation, 4377 Lewis Lane Road, Ayden, NC 28513. The cost is $18.99 plus $3 postage and $1.14 tax for N.C. residents. Credit card orders may be placed by calling 252-746-4221.

    1. [NCHYDE] Boomer Family
    2. Folks, Since we don't know the origin of the Boomer family of Hyde County, I thought this email I received yesterday might be of interest to some of you, especially since she mentions Matthew and William Boomer as being brothers of her ancestor Richard Boomer. Julia Boomer's email address follows her name, below. John - -------------------------------- Saw your surname lisiting on Rootsweb and am wondering if you have an information on a Boomer (or maybe Bulmer?) family who left VA in the late 1700's early 1800's and went to Nova Scotia, Ont, Canada. Our ancestor Richard Boomer was b 1819 in Nova Scotia, but supposedly he's related to a Matthew Boomer (would have been his uncle I think) who left VA (or there abouts) and went to Can. Am assuming he was a loyalist, but have no proof. Seems there were 3 brothers: William, Matthew and Richard who went from Nova Scotia and settled in Ontario. Richard's son, Isaac is our gggrandfather. Any help, advice, information, etc. would really be appreciated. Thank you. Julia Boomer rboomer@compserv.net

From the Md Hist Soc web page. I assume here "Chester" actually means "Chestertown", aka Chester Town, not to be confused with Chester, aka Chester Town, Pennsylvania. Prior to 1682, it seems that there were some arrangements for collecting customs at "Horekill" (Lewes) Del, under the aegis of the authorities in New York - since the English had gotten the Dutch holdings away from the Dutch. After 1682 that part of Del was part of Pennsylvania, except when Maryland and Pennsylvania were arguing over it. I got this from Scharf's mammoth "History of Philadelphia". It is not at all clear that passengers were landed there, however. It seems that customs were collected from immigrants, and part of the complaint came from settlers heading to "West Jersey" around this time. _________________________________ Here's a site which has early ships & passenger lists -- http://www.primenet.com/~langford/gen_page.htm http://istg.rootsweb.com be sure to take a look at Compass http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/ship_1600.htm Olive tree list http://www.cyndislist.com scroll to ships & passengers http://www.ist.uwaterloo.ca/~marj/genealogy/thevoyage.html http://www.mayflowerfamilies.com/ships/hotten_ship_list.htm http://www.mayflowerfamilies.com/_vti_bin/shtml.dll/search_this_site.htm ______________________________

    1. [NCHYDE] Re: "Why Can't I Find Those Records?"
    2. Folks, Being concern about the "unprocessed records" at our State Archives which have remained in storage for many years due to cuts in funds and personell, I contacted a friend who works at the State Archives. I asked his opinion as to the best way we could help alleviate this problem: by sending letters to elected officials or by volunteering to help? Below is his reply. John B. McGowan - -------------------------------------------- John: The best thing you can do is contact your local legislators in the NC House and Senate and tell them of your concerns as a citizen about the level of funding provided the State Archives. Unfortunately, we have just been informed of another major cut in appropriated spending directed by the state budget office that will adversely impact our services to the public and our program operations for the remainder of the fiscal year. I wish I had better news. Thanks for your concern and willingness to help. - -------------------------------------------- to: INT:NCGENWEB-L@rootsweb.com cc: INT:NCHYDE-L@rootsweb.com

    1. [NCHYDE] GIBBS / WISE
    2. Folks, I qm forwarding this query for Florence. Please reply directly to her. Thanks, John - ---------------------------------- GIBBS / WISE Florence Fulford Moore FFFMoore@aol.com November 2, 1999 Henry Wise GIBBS (b. 1854 in Hyde Co., d. 1906 - buried in Bayview Cemetery, Bayview, NC) was my maternal g-grandfather. I am seeking to learn where the WISE line fits in, where they came from, and anything that I can discover about the WISE line. Henry GIBBS's birth record was contained in the Blackbeard's Navigation Guide on file in archives in Raleigh, NC. (The Pettigrews and Gibbses who donated this volume to archives took out the personal data; however, photostated copies are on file there for public use.) There are a number of WISES in Accomack County VA around this time; however, none of them seem to fit into the GIBBS line. Can anyone help steer me in the right direction? Thanks.

    1. [NCHYDE] Where Are Those Records ???
    2. Folks, Please read this carefully ! ! ! ! * * * * * NOTICE * * * * * Excerped from "Why Can't I Find Those Records? The Unprocessed Holdings at NCDAH by John H. Oden, III" [NCGS News, Summer 1999, Vol. 23, No. 2] A tour in 1998 of archival storage facilities by the NCGS Board of Directors revealed box after box of inaccessible records. The boxes were sealed away in various locations in or nesr DAH and were found to be stored in non-archival conditions. These boxes were marked on the end with various inscriptions and packed just as they had left the county courthouse - some fifty years earlier. ( ! ! ! ) This condition has occurred due to fund cut-backs resulting in the loss of one staff position in nearly each of the past ten years. The Constitution of the State of North Carolina directs that the preservation and protection of the records of our state is the responsibility of our state government, and * is a duty * of our elected officials. This duty has been ignored too long, and the resulting situation is reaching a stage of crisis. ** Please contact your local elected officials and state representatives and senators demanding the the proper funding be provided to ensure the protection and preservation of our archival records. ** These officials assumed upon election to ensure that our records would be preserved and protected. This situation is TOO important for you, historians and genealogists alike, to ignore any longer. 1. [NCHYDE] 1st & 2nd NC Union Volunteers
    2. Folks, Having been educated in North Carolina schools in the 1940's and `50's, it was not until college that I learned that thousands on North Carolinians had served in the Union Army and Navy during the Civil War, and that many of these men had come from the area where my ancestors lived, Eastern North Carolina (including Hyde and neighboring counties). I have set up a web site for the NCUV Project and I'm now preparing to post the rosters of the 1st & 2nd North Carolina Union Volunteers online. The URL of our home page is: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~ncuv/ncuv.htm which is now online. We do not have the rosters posted yet, but they should be online within a couple of weeks. I also plan to add other articles, photos, etc., dealing with the 1st & 2nd NCUV as they come available. Dr. Don Collins, professor of history at East Carolina, has contributed an article on the regimental histories of these regiments. He is working on a book on the 1st & 2nd NCUV. If anyone knows where I can locate any materials on these regiments, i.e. articles, masters' thesis, dissertations, photos, etc., I would appreciate learning about them. Once I have the rosters posted online, I will link researchers names / email addresses with the data of their ancestor so that anyone else interested in the same soldier can contact them. Two other (White) Union regiments, the 2nd & 3rd Mounted Infantries, were formed in the mountain area of Western North Carolina. Anyone knowing of research being done on these two regiments please contact me. Also, for those who aren't already aware, please visit our web site on the NCUSCT Project: U.S. Colored Troops formed in North Carolina during the Civil War. The URL is: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncusct/usct.htm This includes the 35th, 36th, 37th US Colored Infantries and the 14th US Colored Heavy Artillery. Thanks, John B. McGowan jmack@bbs.carolina.net PS - Ironically, all of my ancestors fought in the Confederate Army. However, as an (amateur) historian, I think that the other side should be brought to light, that of those who remained loyal to and fought for the Union.

    1. [NCHYDE] RASCOE FAMILY research
    2. I am researching the Rascoe families that arrived in Hyde County prior to 1790. The first ones there were William Rascoe (estate settled in 1799), Daniel Rascoe, and John Rascoe. There was also a Daniel and John Jr. in the early 1800's in Hyde County. The family had several members that married with members of the Swindell Family of Hyde County. I believe that there are still descendants of these Rascoes living in Hyde and Beaufort Counties. If anyone has any information on any of these Rascoe families, i.e. names of parents, siblings, spouses, children and dates of births, marriages, deaths and places of these events, I would appreciate hearing from you. 1. [NCHYDE] Hyde Queries
    2. Folks, Below are two recent queries. Please reply to the submitter, whose email address is below their names. Thanks, John ================================== BROCKETT / SANDERSON / FOSCUE Richard Nash lastoff@horizon.hit.net October 25, 1999 I am in a dark room fumbling for a light switch, and the switch may be in Hyde Co., NC. Please let me explain. The BROCKETTS came down from Princess Anne Co., VA into Pasquotank Co. and Currituck Co., NC. My ancestor, Benjamin BROCKETT (born ca. 1720-25), is never mentioned until he appears receiving a 200 acre land grant in Craven Co., NC in 1743. By that time he was married to Sarah Ann SANDERSON, daughter of Benjamin SANDERSON. The SANDERSON were in Currituck Co. rather early, and I picked up Benjamin SANDERSON in Hyde Co., NC in 1704/5, and again in Craven Co. later on. Lacking other possible answers, I am thinking along the line that Benjamin BROCKETT may have been (as many children were) orphaned and raised in Hyde Co, possibly by the SANDERSONS. I can think of no other way he could have met Sarah. When Benjamin BROCKETT died in 1758, Sarah married Simon FOSCUE III (possibly an uncle). The FOSCUES were also formerly in Hyde County. Any assistance will be appreciated. ================================== DUNN / WINFIELD / MANNING Marilyn Dunn-Dietz mdietz1015@aol.com October 25, 1999 Searching for the descendants of John Edward DUNN, Jr., b. 1882 and Nita WINFIELD of Hyde Co.,NC. Also searching for descendants of Kathryn Elizabeth DUNN, b. 1890, married Fletcher MANNING in Hyde Co., NC. Any information will be greatly appreciated. ==================================

He appears in the 1874 tax records for Hyde Co. and in Tyrell Co. land and cencus records for a while. I have reason to think he was from Hyde Co. but lived in Tyrell Co. for a time. He had 10 children: Mary F., Britaniny E., Phebe A., William Z., Asa, Ester O., Avena, Luther, Benjamin C., and Wilson CAHOON. Have only been able to find a small amount of information on Britainy, Mary, and Benjamin. One of Benjamin's sons (Franklin Sylvenus CAHOON) was my grandfather.
