Betty, According to "North Carolina Research" the following is stated: "Property might be inherited by persons unable to handle it because of age or infirmity. In these cases, probate authorites appointed guardians, conservators, receivers, trustees, or collectors to manage the property for the benefit of its owner. Receivers, often the clerks of superior court, might be authorized to hold and manage the property of minors and others, but normally guardians were appointed. Persons under the care of guardians were called wards. Children 14 or older could choose their own guardians but they were nevertheless legal minors or "infants" until the age of 21. On coming of age they were entitled to receive their estates; if a guardian failed to release the estate voluntarily, the former ward might petition the court to force distribution. Conservators, often also called "guardian" in the records, were appointed to manage the estates of incompetents such as lunatics, idiots, and inebriates, and for the senile elderly. The appointment of a "guardian in lunacy" was often based on the legal, but not necessarily the psychiatric judgment of incompetence made by jury inquistion. Since 1868, applications by prospective guardians have been required and recorded. Guardians' records in the State Archives are customarily filed within the estates-records folders of the children's fathers." Hope this helps. Kay Midgett Sheppard
Thanks to all who responded to my question about the meaning of 'guardian'. I had thought that I had read that there was another meaning for the word but I guess not. I do thank all who gave such good answers - we all help each other as we trace these illusive ancestors! Betty ESTGen@AOL.com
Can anyone tell me the meaning of the word guardian? In a legal document for the state of NC, the word guardian is used -- does that word always mean guardian in respect to a minor child or can it have other meanings? Thanks for any help. Betty ESTGen@AOL.com
Caroline Adelaide Jarvis Coats January 13, 1924 - January 7, 2000 Friends, It is my sad duty to inform you of the death of Caroline Jarvis Coats, daughter of Haven Marshall Jarvis and Carrie Evelyn Turnbull, who died peacefully and without pain late yesterday evening, January 7, at her home in Florida. Caroline was disgnosed with cancer last year but managed even then to contribute to the Hyde County web site. Although I never had the pleasure of meeting her, I felt I knew her. She was so enthused with Hyde County genealogy which was our common ground. Last year she sent me and other the entire 1880 Hyde County census without my ever asking for it and later some photos to post on our photos pages. Inside each of these packages she always enclosed one of her favorite Hyde County recipes. She was one of the first people to volunteer to do lookups for our web site three years ago and I imagine many of you have benefited from this. If you go to our Hyde Co. Volunteer Page you will notice Caroline's name is listed on nearly every other line. She will be sorely missed. Please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers as they go through this difficult time. Kay Lynn Midgett Sheppard

Hello Folks, I received the below e-mail from one of the Tennessee county lists that I belong to. I thought it was quite appropriate for all of us to ponder on. I hope each and every one of you had a great Christmas and that you find those elusive ancestors in the coming New Year. Kay Lynn ----------------- It is the day after Christmas! That may not seem like a special day to most people, but those of us who do a lot of genealogy on the internet have been looking forward to this day for a long time. Last year and the year before, December 26th marked the beginning of a surge of on-line activity. Yesterday, many family historians found brand new computers under their Christmas trees. Some of those people are new to genealogy and some are old hands. Either way, it may take them a while to master their new toys and many of them will have new e-mail. They are bound to fumble around for a while before they get the knack of it. I would like to ask everyone on this list to be patient and kind with new members who will be joining our ranks during the weeks to come. You are likely to see queries which make no sence, those dreaded ALL CAPS messages and other breaches of "netiquette." Try to overlook the problems and do your best to make the new people feel at home here. We may have to ask a few questions to clarify their messages, but I am sure it will be worthwhile. Some of these new people just may have terrific information to share, or at least a fresh point of view which may lead to solving some of our worst old genealogical problems. Don't get frustrated if things get a little wierd. Just pour yourself a cup of hot chocolate, read all the mesages and try to lend a helping hand. This can be an exciting opportunity to meet some wonderful new people who share your interest in family history.

I have today placed in the mail my check, for the amount promised, to the Mattamuskeet Foundation, Inc., and, another for the book on Mattamuskeet by Dr. Forrest. I here express my gratitude to Dr. Forrest and his son for this invaluable contribution to the continuing effort we are engaged in, to keep our past alive, and to the assuring that those who begat us, will not disappear from memory; and, to finding out those who might otherwise remain lost to memory. I thank you one and all, Merlin Berry
Dear folks, I was absolutely bowled over this morning when I finally got to my computer. It seems your overwhelming generosity will get John a new computer for Christmas...and what a beauty it is!! I was in a quandry about how to go about getting the donations, buying a computer, and getting it to John before Christmas. It seems that Mr. Lewis Forrest, Jr. and his son, David, have taken care of the problem in a BIG way. Not only is David giving up his computer at cost but will make the two hour drive to deliver it before Christmas! Attached below are parts of the e-mails to me from Mr. Forrest which gives a description of John's new computer, who to make your checks out to, and the address to send your kind donations to. I'm sure this will be one of John's most memorable Christmas' ever. Your acts of kindness are truly what Christmas is all about. My heart-felt thanks to you all, Kay Lynn ----------- My son has a 300Mhz CPU with 96MB of Ram and a 6GB hard drive that he will sell for $200. It has a writable CD-ROM drive installed that he will leave for an additional $100. The hard drive can be used for inexpensive back-up storage should the hard drive fail at some point. We can add a new 17" monitor for about $179. So, for about $500 we can provide this unit if it is what John needs. My son works at CompUSA and bought this computer within the last year (new) as a shelf-worn display unit. He has since bought a 400Mhz unit the same way and only wants to recover the cost of his replacement unit. Everything on the 300 Mhz machine works great. I have been considering buying it for our use, but John seems to need it more than our office at the moment. The Mattamuskeet Foundation will add $100 to the pledges of Merlin Berry and Sharon Gable bringing the total to $300. John has helped us recently with promotion of our new book and will undoubtedly help us again. Someone may want to donate a good 17" monitor. I have a 13-14" I can donate, but I feel the larger size will be very beneficial to John. ---------- John McGowen and I spoke this morning and it appears that the computer I offered will more than meet his needs. I have also spoken with my son, David, and the package I have specified now includes the following: 1. 300Mhz processer, 96MB Ram, 6GB hard drive, rewritable CD-ROM drive. 2. 17' monitor (Turns out David is willing to sell his monitor.). 3. 56k modem. 4. Box of 10 rewritable CD-Rom disks. 5. Reformat the hard drive and load Windows 98. 6. Load the software for the writable CD-Rom. 7. Load Netscape and Microsoft Explorer. 8. Load Norton Antivirus. 9. The package will cost $500, including all of the above. If you like, donors can write their checks directly to "The Matttamuskeet Foundation, Inc." and I will send receipts so they can take a tax deduction. Tell them to note that the check is for "Donation - Hyde County Web Host" on the check. I will process payment to my son, David. If the donations exceed $500, we can purchase other goodies for the sytem, or I will send the overage to you or John to hold in reserve for the next need. Lewis C. Folks, As you all know from the memo I sent out last week, John McGowan, the Hyde County web host, has had a computer crash. John is not able to purchase another PC computer at this time but I was wondering....... if Santa happens to bring anyone on this list (or any of your friends) a new computer for Christmas if you (or your friend) have no use for your old one, would you be willing to give it to John so he can get back online and start maintaining the web page again. OR if there is anyone on this list that knows of a PC computer for sale cheap, please drop me an e-mail at: genie12@bellsouth.net. Let's all pull together to see if we can come up with something for John so he can take the Hyde web site into the new millinieum. I'm sure great things await us in the Year 2000! My thanks to all of you for your understanding in this matter and remember if any of you have any queries or questions please send them to me as John isn't receiving any e-mail at this time. I hope each and every one of you have a joyous Holiday season. Kay Midgett Sheppard, interim Hyde Co. web host
Folks, I received an early morning phone call from our Hyde County web host, John McGowan, informing me of his computer crashing this morning. So far he has not been able to contact any technical help so he has asked that I be the interim host until he gets the computer up and running again. I assure you this is not an Alexander Haig ("I am in charge now") takeover by me but only a temporary position on my part...I DO NOT want his job as there just aren't enough hours in the day to do what John has managed to do each and every day for the past 2 years. So for the time being if any of you have any questions or queries, send them to me at: genie12@bellsouth.net. I will attempt to do the best I can with what limited knowledge I have of how to run a web site. Thanks for all your understanding. Kay Lynn Midgett Sheppard
Folks, I have received several emails requesting information on how to join the Hyde County Historical & Genealogical Society and how to obtain copies of the "High Tides." For the Home Page of the Hyde County Historical & Genealogical Society, go to: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/HCHGS.HTM for information on joining the Society.
