Well, folks we made it home safe and sound and I can tell you I was thrilled to see the place and to know that I would be able to sleep in my own bed but I was also saddened that I had to leave my friends behind in North Carolina. Brittany, our 16 year old granddaughter, had done a magnificent job of keeping the house straightened up and watching our 4 dogs and 2 cats. (She is interested in veterinary medicine so this was good practice for her.) Glenda had mowed our yard and Mom's so I will not have to do that chore until the latter part of next week...thank heavens! We visited in Greenville, NC on Saturday with Mary Moore and her delightful 87 year old mother who entertained us with stories of growing up in Hyde county. Shirley Edwards & Gladys Sadler were also there. Shirley and Gladys have a published book called "The Luptons of North Carolina" which I readily bought. Glenn took lots of pictures of some very old photos that Mary had retrieved from the flooding caused by one of the hurricanes. These are pictures of her ancestors. I will work with them and post them on our Hyde photos pages in the future.. We talked and talked about the genealogy of our respective ancestors while Glenn snoozed in the car. :) Then they served us a wonderful lunch and saw us on our way to Nags Head that afternoon. We stayed in Nags Head from Saturday night through Tuesday. Easter Sunday morning we drove to the Chicamacomico Life Saving Station in Rodanthe which is being renovated. Bob Huggett gave us a 2-hour grand tour even though the station is not open to the public until May 15. They even have one of the original lifeboats housed there that was used in the Mirlo rescue. Bob is a wonderful, kind man and knows everything there is to know about the station and the men that stayed there. If you ever have a chance to go to the Outer Banks, don't miss this attraction. Sunday evening we met with Kay France and her husband Rick in Nags Head. They live in Virginia but have a summer home at Nags Head and just happened to be there for Easter week-end. I was really delighted to finally get to meet them after conversing via e-mail for over a year. She has Hyde & Tyrrell Co. ties in her ancestry. On Monday we left Nags Head early to go to Elizabeth City. We had enough spare time so I stopped by to visit with Lois Meekins in Coinjock who is working on the Dare County Cemetery book. Lois and I have been friends for years now so I didn't want to pass up the chance to see her again. Her cemetery book is coming along nicely and I can tell you if you have any Dare, Currituck, Hyde or Tyrrell county ties you will NOT want to pass this book up when it's finally published. I will apprise the mailing list when this book is in publication. We arrived in Elizabeth City around 10:00 and sat on the waterfront in the glorious sun (which we hadn't seen much of since arriving in NC). We were to meet at 11:30 in Mulligan's Pub for lunch with Sel & Suzy Mann from Orange Park, FL, George & Lorraine Owens from Mass., Jess Mercer from Elizabeth City, and a whole passle of others from various parts of the country. Most of these folks graduated from EC High School in 1947 and it was a sort of semi-class reunion and genealogy fest. Sel has ancestors from down around Manns Harbor and Stumpy Point. Glenn and I didn't stay long as we didn't want to interfere with the reunion part of the lunch but I'm glad I went so I could give Sel a big ole bear hug like I told him I would if I ever saw him face to face. On Tuesday we strolled around the Manteo waterfront and visited my very favorite bookstore, The Manteo Booksellers. They have tons of books done by local folks on local things. I managed to come away with a sackful of new books to add to my already burgeoning library. I also visited the Dare Co. courthouse and the Outer Banks History Center which has been added to since I was last there 7 years ago. Brain Edwards was extremely helpful to me while there. I also managed to get in a little microfilm reading in the Center. Meanwhile Glenn snoozed in the car.... We had a delightful lunch at Clara's on the waterfront with Marybruce Lennon Dowd whom I have known and corresponded with for some time now. Marybruce absolutely can talk your ear off about any Midgett in Dare County. She has Midgett's galore in her lineage so she and I talked the afternoon away about them. Meanwhile Glenn read a book in the car...are you beginning to get the picture now? :) That afternoon we drove into Hyde County (the last leg of our trip) in a blinding rain storm, and stayed the evening at Hotel Engelhard owned and operated by George Terrell. Wednesday morning we got up early and drove to Fairfield to meet with Betty Mann at her home...also the home of the Hyde Co. Historical & Genealogical Society library. We chatted until it was time to drive back to Martelle's Restaurant in Engelhard where we met with R.S. Spencer, Ellen Williams, Ann Williams, Betty Mann, Sandy Carawan, and Roy Clarke, Jr. who treated us to a wonderful buffet lunch and great conversation. They presented us with an afghan depicting Hyde County points of interest and a basket chocked full of Hyde T-shirts, pot holders, soaps, sachets, the Lake Mattamuskeet book done by Lewis C. Forrest, and other goodies. Oh, and Ellen gave us a tin of cornbread cake for our trip back home...yummmm, it sure was good! :) All too soon our trip had come to an end. We drove from Engelhard to Winston-Salem on Wednesday evening then drove 8 hours on Thursday and arrived home at 3:00 pm right before a huge storm hit here. We just managed to get all our luggage unloaded before the rain started in earnest. I am very sorry that our trip could not be extended but Glenn is retiring in October so I will make sure our next trip is sooner than 7 years. I extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to those of you that made our trip eventful. My friends--I hope to see you all again. Kay Lynn PS: I have tons of e-mail to go through so if you're wanting something posted to the web page please be patient with me as I will go through them as I got them...earliest first.

Folks, Hyde County has a new web site added to its coffers! Sandy Carawan, who lives in Engelhard and is an excellent photographer, has created a new web site of Hyde County gravestones. If you live too far from Hyde County and wish to have photographs made and know that your ancestor is buried in Hyde County, Sandy is just the person you need to contact. She will travel to any Hyde County Cemetery (limited months) and take a photograph of the tombstone in question with only a minimal amount of cost to you. Please check out her site at: http://www.angelfire.com/nc2/CarawanOBX/page157.html Give this page a little time to load as it has large images...you won't be sorry you waited. Hi everyone, I am trying to document info for a friend who is interested in becoming a member of DAR. I hate to admit this but I must! I downloaded 'Descendants of Christopher R. Rollinson' and I don't know where I found it to download!! I know none of you would have done anything like that!!! It had endnotes with documentation. Do any of you know where I might have found that or did someone send it to me??? I'm not too computer savvy! The line I am following is: 1. Christopher R. ROLLINSON b. 07 Oct 1799 2. John Wallace ROLLINSON b. 07 Jan 1827 3. Missouri W. ROLLINSON b. 12 Sep 1854 4. Lena Wallace WILLIS b. abt 1878 I am interested in the Willis family also. Does anyone know the parents of the Christopher R. ROLLINSON? I would appreciate any help that I might get. Thanks. Betty ESTGen@AOL.com
