    1. [NCHYDE] Heaven
    2. Kay M. Sheppard
    3. Folks, Please forgive me for posting this but I thought it was too good to pass up. It was sent to me this morning from Sel Mann, my good friend and genealogy buddy who lives in Orange Park, Florida but is a "displaced" Tarheel. Hope you all enjoy it. Kay Lynn --------------- A man decided to write a book about churches across the United States. First, the man visited a church in California. During his tour of the magnificent building he noticed a golden telephone on a wall with a sign that read $10,000 a minute". Intrigued, he asked about the phone and was told that the golden phone was a direct line to Heaven that could be used to talk directly to God. Next, the man visited a church in New York. Again, he noticed exactly the same type of phone, with exactly the same sign on it. Sure enough, upon inquiry, he was informed that it was a direct line to Heaven and could be used to talk directly to God. Continuing through many other states, he found the same phone with the same sign and was repeatedly told the same story, until, finally, upon arriving at a church in North Carolina, he spotted the usual golden telephone with a different sign. This time, the sign read "Calls 25 cents." He quickly found the preacher and said to him, "I have been in cities all across the country, and in each church I found this golden telephone, was told that it was a direct line to Heaven, and that I could talk to God. But, in all the other churches across the country, the charge was $10,000.00 a minute. Your sign reads 25 cents a call. Why?" The preacher smiled at him and said "My son, that's very easy to explain. You see, you're in North Carolina now and, it's a local call from here."

    1. [NCHYDE] New Addition and Announcement
    2. Kay M. Sheppard
    3. Folks, I have just added a new surname to our 2000 list. The Cooper surname was sent in by Ruffin R. Cooper. If any of you are researching Cooper's please feel free to go to the below site and drop Mr. Cooper a line. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/HYDENAM5.HTM I was incredulous to learn this morning that the 400-year old John White drawings are copyrighted by the British Museum and were published by the British Museum Press into a book. Apparently the museum owns the originals and they charge a fee for using any drawing so I feel I must take the drawing of the Village of Pomeiock offline, however, I will leave it up for a week or two to give you a chance to copy it for your files if you so choose. If I wind up in jail for infringement, are there any good attorney's on the list? :) Kay Lynn

    1. [NCHYDE] John White
    2. Betty, This is the John White from the history books who came to America and helped to establish the Colony of Roanoke in 1587. John White was the leader of the colony. He returned to England for more supplies once the colony was established. He was not able to return until about 1790 because England was at war with Spain and England needed all here ships to battle the Spanish Armanda. When John White returned to America, the colonists had disappeared. The colony became known as the Lost Colony. John White's daughter married Ananias Dare. Their daughter, Virginia Dare, was the first English child born in the New World. Ken Slade
