Folks, Harriette has been a long-standing member and friend of the Hyde County Historical and Genealogical Society who underwent a heart transplant last year. She would like for you to be aware of organ donations and a book that has been written by the mother of the girl whose heart she received. Please take a little time to read this and pass it on to everyone on your mailing list that you feel would be interested in this book. Thanks, Kay Lynn - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Friends and Family, For those of you who may not know, I had a heart transplant on March 7, 1999. I received the heart of an 18 year old very special young woman named Morgan. Her mother, Michelle Peele has written a book which describes the journey through her grief and pain and the Glimpses of God that came at the moment she needed them. I have read the rough draft. It is a book that will touch your emotions and yet you will smile when you see those glimpses. Proceeds from the book will go to the organ procurement agency that benefit organ donor awareness throughout the US. There were four people whom I visited at UNC Hospital after my transplant who died waiting for hearts. When people become more aware, hope this will not continue to happen. With love and thanks, Harriette Harris Riggs GLIMPSES OF GOD In this powerfully emotional book, a mother recreates a true story that helps the reader comprehend that there is a ray of hope through the minute, everyday GLIMPSES OF GOD. Accepting that the loss of her bright, young daughter will be a never ending journey, she opens her heart and touches the readers emotions, while she creates an atmosphere of hope in which healing can begin. Filled with raw and often painful emotion, this story will make you cry and smile as you travel on this endless journey. It is sprinkled with real-life, honest, and generous GLIMPSES OF GOD. Please take a moment and order this amazing account of the power of grace. Please order GLIMPSES OF GOD by Michelle Peele today. Order by phone from Pentland Press at 1-800-948-2786. Cost of the hardcover book is $16.95. >From the Recipient of Morgan's Heart. This book is about the girl and the family that gave me and my family the "gift of life". Please support this endeavor. The proceeds from the sale of this beautiful book will benefit organ donor awareness throughout the United States. Call 1-800-355-SHARE for a brochure about organ donation. MAY GOD BLESS YOU, Harriette Harris Riggs

Hello Betty Cavner and anyone else researching COOPER. Betty Cavner, I tried to ask you about the COOPER line per your posting in the Beaufort County web page, but you must have changed your e-mail address. Please contact me, either through the list or privately. Ruffin Cooper rrcooper@erols.com
Hello Sharon Gable and anyone else. I have been searching my COOPER line which started as far as I know in Martin and then moved to Hyde County. However, I just learned from Kay Sheppard's postings that my uncle Sam W. COOPER (b. March 1883) lived at some point in Beaufort County. He was the husband of Elsie PUGH (b. Apr. 13, 1892, d. Aug. 20, 1925) and the father of Thelma T. COOPER (b. May 15, 1916, d. July 5, 1939). Elsie and Thelma are buried somewhere in Beaufort County. If Sharon Gable or anyone else has any information that would be helpful I would appreciate your assistance. I have up against the "brick wall" for some time. You can contact me through the list or privately. Thank you. Ruffin Cooper rrcooper@erols.com
At the top of this page was written St. John's Episcopal Church. I don't have a clue whether these are tombstone inscriptions or church records or someone's own personal research. They were written in the same handwriting as the tombstone inscriptions and on the same yellow legal paper. Maybe this will help someone out there or at least give you a starting point. Folks, I've been going through the Alton Payne files today and found the following Hyde Co. people who are buried in Beaufort County. These papers were in disarray and most of the transcriptions did not denote which cemetery it was taken from. I think there are other Hyde county folks in these tombstone transcriptions and would have put all of them up on the web page but for lack of knowing just exactly where they were buried so I decided to just send a note in case any of you on the list are interested in any of these people. Hope they are of some help to you researchers. Kay Lynn knee-deep in pickles, squash and tomatoes!! - ------------------------------------- Beaufort Co. Looking for help locating ancestors of Joseph W. Gaskill, born about 1820 and died February 06, 1889. He married Mary Louisa Gautier. These facts have been verified through family Bible notations and the birth record of son, John Milton Gaskill. I have 'present day' family but no links to ancestors in the early 1800s and back. Joseph was a ship captain and I have been told he dealt in the trade of mahogany wood, primarily from the Bahamas into New York. I know of two ships: the J W GASKILL and the MARGUERITE, which is supposed to have been 'lost' at sea (with no trace). Any leads will be gratefully appreciated. Barbara R. Lucas

Folks, I have been asked by Paulette Midgette to send a note to the Hyde mailing list to see is any one of you have the Ellen Cloud book entitled "1860 Slave Inhabitants of Hyde County, North Carolina" which has been out of print for several years now. Mrs. Cloud was contacted and she doesn't even have a copy. Paulette would be glad to pay for a photostatic copy of the book or buy one if any of you have an extra copy that you would be willing to part with. You can reply straight to Paulette at: paulette_midgette@merck.com. Thanks. Kay Lynn
Hi folks, I've been "cooling my heels" in the office this morning adding new things for you to enjoy. First we have a new query from Jimmie Nell Meadors concerning the SWINDLE family. You can view the query and reply directly to her with any information that you might have at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/HYDEQUE5.HTM Next we have a photograph of Louisa David (Jarvis) Jarvis, 5th and last wife of Tilman Ferdinand Jarvis, Sr. This was submitted by Louise Jarvis McLeod and can be viewed at: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~jmack/photos/tfjarvis.htm Of course you can always check our What's New page for any new additions at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/WHATSNEW.HTM It's very, very hot here in middle TN with no end in sight it seems so if you have some old photographs that you would like to submit to me for posting, I'll be in my office where it's nice and cool and have the time to post them...no gardening for me this week but my Tennessee sweet pickles are coming along nicely in their crock jug. Hope all of you are having a very nice Monday. Kay Lynn
