Folks, For those of you who have Boomer, Harris or Gibbs lines the following was found on the Wilson Co., TN mailing list this morning. Thought some of you out there might be interested. When I find things of this nature do you think I should put it in our "Tidbits " section so everyone would get the benefit of the information and not just the list members? Keep in mind that I have not personally looked at any of these records so you can use this information as a guide for further research. Let me hear your opinions. Folks, I received this today, which may be of interest to some of you. John ______________________________ If you haven't had a chance to check yet, the FamilySearch.org site has changed significantly -- and for the better. They've added many new items including maps of the Family History Library and on-site Class Schedules for those who would like to attend. http://www.familysearch.org If any of your states/counties have links to that site, you'll need to re-locate the correct URL and make the appropriate changes on your pages. Folks, For those of you interested in African-American history, especially during the Civil War period, I have posted two new web pages on the NC-USCT web site. The first is the 1922 autobiography of William Henry Singleton, a slave from Craven County who became a sargeant in Company G, 35th US Colored Infantry. After the war, he became a minister in Conneticutt. His description of his days as a slave is worth your attention. The URL is: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncusct/singlton.htm The second new page is the Pension Papers (6 pages) of Robert Dunbar (alias Robert Danvers). He was a slave from Tyrrell County who became a private in Company G, 35th US Colored Infantry and settled in Pamlico County after the war. Pension Papers shed a lot of light on a soldiers' life during and after the war. Robert Dunbar was the great grandfather of Ray Credle, one of our Hyde County researchers. Boy are we on a roll today!! I just received a "letter from the past" written in 1918 from Herman Swindell to his mother, Sarah Ann Rebecca Swindell, who saw plenty of action in France. This letter was submitted by Bob Williams, Jr., great-grandson of Sarah Ann. Thanks Bob!! To view this newest addition go to: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/LETTER12.HTM Kay Lynn
Folks, I have added several new items to the web page today. Three queries from Bob Williams about some old photos he found in his grandmother's possessions and a new web page entitled "Taking the Backroads" which I think you'll enjoy. This new page was the idea of Thelma Credle Fulford, soon to be 88-year old mother of one of our list members, who decided to see if she could remember her old neighborhood in Rose Bay. I think she did a wonderful job and I'm sure you're all going to enjoy it. You can view any of the above additions by going to the What's New page and clicking on the link. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/WHATSNEW.HTM Kay Lynn

Folks, I hope to soon set up new sections on our site dealing with African-Americans and Native Americans who resided in Hyde County. I would appreciate any suggestions and/or materials which any of you have in these areas. Your assistance will be appreciated. John
Folks, I've set up new a search engine, which will index all 385 pages of the Hyde Co., NCGenWeb. This is provided by FreeFind, who will check our web site daily for any new materials. But please don't let this keep you from browsing all of the pages...., you never know what you'll find. Remember that early record keepers often misspelled our ancestors names, so if at first your search doesn't succeed, try another spelling. I hope the new search engine will help you with your research. John
I found this on another list that I subscribe to and thought it would be of interest to you folks. "Buyer Beware" is the moral of this story. Kay Lynn ------------------ Hello - there is a for-pay Genealogy web site by the name of FamilyDiscovery.com that is illegally linking to numerous FREE resources, and charging users a "one-time" fee of $49.95 for access to the free resources. Unfortunately, there is a link to the Library of Virginia's Wills and Administrations electronic card index on this site. Requests to have it removed have been ignored. I am in the process of blocking the site from connecting to our server, but I wanted to let you all know that this is a RIP-OFF - please do not give these people your credit-card information! Please contact me privately if you have any questions or concerns - this site has been discussed at length on all of the genealogy newsgroups if you want further information. I would really like to avoid starting a conversation about it on the list. Thank you very much! Dear Hyde Researchers, In case anyone has noticed, I've been offline since the first of the year. I have now resumed my duties as co-host of the Hyde Co., NCGenWeb Pages with Kay Lynn. First of all, I want to sincerely thank all of you who so kindly helped and supported me, first with my computer crash and then with my more recent illness. I won't soon forget your generousity and your thoughfulness. As the Beatles said, "I get by with a little help from my friends." Thank you all. Most of all, I want to thank Kay Lynn for everything she has done for me and for all of the Hyde researchers. There just aren't words enough to express my graditude and admiration of my friend, a friend to all of us. Without her, the Hyde Pages certainly wouldn't be as nearly beneficial to researchers as it is. Thank you Kay. As most of you know, Kay Lynn has designed a new Home Page for the Hyde website which will make your navigation around the site much easier. I published the new Hyde Home Page earlier this week. The URL for the Hyde Home Page will remain the same: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/HYDE.HTM so if you have the site bookmarked, you will not have to change it. For those who may prefer it, the present Home Page will also remain online at a new URL: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/HYDEOLD.HTM . Thanks again to all of you folks, in Hyde or elsewhere. Yours truly, John B. McGowan jmack@carolina.net Hyde Co., NCGenWeb Pages http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/HYDE.HTM
