Folks, Merry Christmas to one and all. I've just finished posting "The Mattamuskeet Documents" by Patrick Garrow in the Native American section of the Hyde Pages. I believe this will be of interest not only to those interested in Hyde's early Indians, but also to descendants of the early white settlers of the eastern part of the county, and also to those black families which intermarried with the native americans. The URL is: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/MATTA1.HTM John
Folks, This week-end I have added 86 new obituaries from the 1820's-1890's. These were all found in different Beaufort Co. newspapers on microfilm. To check them out please go to: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/WHATSNEW.HTM Kay Lynn
Folks, I have added a few obituaries this week as well as some newspaper articles from The Dare County Times, the predecessor of The Coastland Times. This microfilmed newspaper covers the years 1938-1945 with a lot of issues missing. I have attempted to do the best I could with the abstractions but the newspaper was in tiny print and to make things worse it was filmed slightly out of focus so there will be question marks in some of the abstractions indicating where I could not tell what the words were. John has also added some really great military history on Fort Hatteras and is working on other military and Indian items to be posted soon. To view any of these new additions please go to our What's New page and click on the link of your choice. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/WHATSNEW.HTM Kay Lynn
Folks, The email program on my server is down, for how long I don't know. Please address any and all emails to me to: >> jmack@carolina.net << *Do Not* use any of the addresses which include "wgserver" or "bbs". By this time tomorrow, I will have posted a new page, contributed by Earl W. O'Neil, Jr., on the Civil War on Ocracoke and Portsmouth Islands. The URL will be: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/FTOCRACO.HTM Thanks, John
OK Folks--our first addition for the month of December is a query on the Greene family of Swan Quarter/Juniper Bay area. If you have any information for Ms. Shelton please contact her. You can view this query at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/HYDEQUE5.HTM Kay Lynn

I, and I'm sure the other Hyde researchers, thank you very much for your tireless labors, on the Will Books and everything else you've done for the Hyde Pages. It just wouldn't be the same without you. John
Folks, I have FINALLY finished Hyde County Will Book 5 and now have it online for your viewing pleasure. I apologize for letting this project go on too long but hopefully now that's it done you will be able to find something on your ancestors in this will book which dates from May Term 1830 - May Term 1837. Since there were 7 years involved I had to break it apart into segments. I think I had segments 1-5 posted last year so the new ones will be 6-8. I hope you enjoy it!! http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/WILLBK5.HTM Kay Lynn

Folks, For your Information: Beware Santa email ! ! ! John - --------------------------------------------------------------- V I R U S R E P O R T: by the Trend Micro US Virus Research Group - --------------------------------------------------------------- TROJ_MUSIC.A is a network-enabled Trojan that is disguised as a simple program that displays graphics and plays a tune. The graphic is that of Santa Claus and the tune played is a well-known Christmas carol "We Wish You a Merry Christmas." Upon execution, it modifies the Windows registry and drops files to propagate via email. A sample of the email is as follows: Subject: Testing to send file Message Body: Hi, just testing email using Merry Christmas music file, not bad music. Or Hi, just testing email using Merry Christmas music file, you'll like it. Attachment: MUSIC.COM or MUSIC.EXE or MUSIC.ZIP Although the samples received so far are non-destructive, this Trojan has the capability to download upgrades from the Internet, which may be more malicious. For additional payload information, please refer to our Web site at: http://www.antivirus.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=TROJ_MUSIC.A TROJ_MUSIC.A is detected and removed with Trend pattern #798 and above. - ---------------------------------------------------------------
Folks, Ive set up a web page containing data on the African American sailors from Hyde Co., NC who served in the US Navy during the Civil War. This data was extracted from the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System (CWSS) of the National Parks Service (NPS). I found 14 sailors, formerly ex-slaves and freedmen, from Hyde Co., NC. In all there were 933 men who listed various towns and countys in NC as their place of birth. However, a large number of these just listed NC as their birthplace, no county given. I feel sure that some of them were from Hyde County. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/HYDENAVY.HTM On the NC-USCT web site, I have set up a section on the 933 African Americans in the U. S. Navy from North Carolina. My brief study of some of the most common surnames of Hyde Co., NC showed that many of these men only listed as being from NC, but no county given. A further study of census, marriage and other records will shed more light on the subject. Your help is needed in adding any data which you may have on any of these sailors and correcting any errors you find. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncusct/uscnavy.htm John
Folks, John and I have added several items over the past few days. Instead of telling you about each one of them please go to the What's New page and see for yourself the new additions. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/WHATSNEW.HTM For those of you that live in and around Raleigh--watch yourself in all that snow!! Folks, Since reading R.S. Spencer's newspaper abstracts in the latest High Tides, I decided to get the microfilm out of old newspapers and sit down to my reader (not one of my favorite things to do) to see what I could find on Hyde County. These were all Elizabeth City newspapers but I managed to find several old obits and some interesting articles pertaining to Hyde County. For the 1881-1906 articles go to: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/ARTICLE1.HTM Check the What's New page for new obituaries added today at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/WHATSNEW.HTM Kay Lynn in soon to be frigid (and possibly white) Tennessee
