Hello all; The Slades came from Hyde County originally, and then spread out. I am looking for: the parents of Ebenezer Slade, from Craven County. His wife was Louisa, his children were Jeremiah, Catherine and Nancy, all born in the 1820¹s in Craven County and baptized in St. Mary¹s Episcopal Church in Lenoir in 1833. Does anyone have information on him and this family? Any help appreciated!
It appears that most COOPER's of Hyde and Martin Counties are related. I have the names of many other COOPER's. I am searching for the parents and siblings of my ggf Edward COOPER, born Abt. 1810, probably in Martin County, North Carolina. Sometime between 1860 and 1870 he moved to Hyde County, North Carolina. One of Edward COOPER's wives probably was Levina Caroline SAWYER, born about 1831, other given names for possible wives are Fanny and Elizabeth. His children were: James COOPER, b. Abt 1842, probably in Martin County, NC Francis COOPER, b. Abt 1852, probably in Martin County, NC Sylvanus COOPER, b. April 1855 in Jamesville, Martin County, NC **Sylvanus' wives were the sisters (maybe twins) Sally L. and Rebecca ROSE, b. Abt 1861, daughters of Samuel (or Sampson) W. ROSE and Caroline Amanda SMITH. Samuel and Sampson ROSE were brothers and may have been twins. Joseph J. COOPER, b. October 1857 in Jamesville, Martin County, NC **Joseph's wife was Naomi COX, born October 1861, daughter of Jonathan and Elizabeth COX George Edward COOPER, b. Abt 1860, either Martin or Hyde Co. NC **George's wife was Mary Ellen LIVERMAN, b. September 14, 1861, daughter of William LIVERMAN and Eleanor GALLAGHER. Martha COOPER, b. Abt. 1865, either in Martin or Hyde Co. NC Jesse COOPER, b. April 1869, either in Martin or Hyde Co. NC Looking for any help and willing to share information. Middletown Memorial Dedication: Please do not forget the dedication of the memorial to the 109 men of Company F, 33rd NC Regiment. This service will be held in Middletown, Hyde County, NC at 2 o'clock, Saturday the 28th of April. The Spiral and plaque will be in place. Seth Latham has performed an outstanding service in his tireless efforts to bring this memorial to reality. He, and the members of SCV Camp #1695, should be congratulated for their dedication for this most worthy endeavor.
An interesting article... One statement in it surprised me - that Hatteras Island had been barren back in the days of the earliest settlers. Other materials I've read recently talk about the forests and wild game abundant on the Outer Banks as late as 1840. After that, cutting of lumber and livestock grazing (with the increase in residents) severely affected growth of trees and other vegetation. New sand dunes took hold in the mid-1800s, which grew and rapidly shifted across the islands, leaving few trees or game by 1890. I had assumed that the relative abundance on the Outer Banks in the early 1800s would be true going back to the 1700s and 1600s. A number of our ancestors of various lines (Midyette, Gibbs, Spencer, etc.) owned land at "Chekenaccomack" (various spellings) and other Outer Banks areas in the 1700s according to land deeds and similar references. The implication seemed to be that such lands were valuable, as opposed to barren beaches and sand dunes. - Jim ---------------------- Forwarded by James L. Folks, For those of you outside the area but interested in visiting the Hyde County Historical and Genealogical Society Library, here's an update (I was able to visit last week while on vacation in NC)... The HCHGS library was moved this winter to the Mattamuskeet School on US Hwy 264, a little west of Route 94. [As I understand it, the school library doubles as the Mattamuskeet Public Library.] All the genealogy materials have been unpacked. They are in reasonable order, although they have not been cataloged. I did not have any problem locating the materials I wanted to find. The library may be accessed any time that school is in session (normal school hours, 5 days per week). When the school is closed, the library may still be used (except on holidays) according to the following public schedule: Monday 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Tuesday 3:00 PM - 6:30 PM Wednesday 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Thursday 3:00 PM - 6:30 PM Friday 10:00 AM - 3:30 PM Saturday 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM That means on a Tuesday when school is in session, (I think) the library is open all day until 6:30 PM. During the summer on a Tuesday, the library would not open until the afternoon. You might want to confirm hours by calling ahead: 252-926-1955. Yes, there is a copier available. Charges are 15 cents per page, which you pay to the librarian when you're finished for the day. - Jim Spencer

Hi, Can anyone tell me when the canal from Lake Mattamuskeet to Juniper Bay was dug. I would appreciate any information on this canal which does not appear on A New and Accurate Map of North Carolina of 1779 but does appear on the Price-Strothers Map of 1808. Thanks, John
Folks, I have postew two new articles on the Algonquins of Coastal Carolina web page: "North Carolina Algonquians," by Christian F. Feest, 1978, and "The Ethnic Position of the Southeastern Algonquian," by Frank G. Speck, 1924. Both contain references to the Machapungas / Mattamuskeets of Hyde County. Do you have Native American ancestors? Pat Garrow writes of the intermarriage of the Mattamuskeets with Black families in The Mattamuskeet Documents. Does anyone have information of the Mattamuskeets intermarriage with White families? Anyone having articles or other materials on the Indians of the Hyde County and northeastern NC area, please contact me. Thanks, John

Folks, Below is a report of a new virus (worm) from Norton Antivirus, which will have the subject of: Naked Wife. Please update your antivirus program as soon as possible. John ---------------------------------------------- W32.Naked@mm Discovered on: March 6, 2001 Last Updated on: March 6, 2001 at 03:20:12 PM PST Printer-friendly version W32.Naked@mm is a mass mailing worm that disguises itself as flash movie. The attachment is named NakedWife.exe. This worm, after it has attempted to email everyone in the Microsoft Outlook address book, will attempt to delete several system files. This will leave the system unusable, requiring a re-install. NOTE: This worm was previously detected as W32.HLLW.JibJab@mm. Category: Trojan Horse, Worm Virus Definitions: March 6, 2001 Wild: Number of infections: 50 - 999 Number of sites: 3 - 9 Geographical distribution: Medium Threat containment: Moderate Damage: Payload Trigger: Every time that the worm is executed Payload: Deletes files: Attempts to delete several files from the \Windows and \Windows\System folders Distribution: Subject of email: FW: NAKED WIFE Name of attachment: NakedWife.exe Size of attachment: 73,728 bytes Technical description: When first executed, W32.Naked@mm displays a window that appears to be loading a Flash movie. The window will display the words "JibJab." If you click the "Help > About Windows" menu, the following message will be displayed: You're are now F***ED. (c) 2001 by BGK (Bill Gates Killer) In the background, while the flash movie is "loading", this worm attempts to send itself to everyone in the Microsoft Outlook address book. The message that this worm sends is as follows: Subject: Naked Wife Message: My wife never look like that! ;-) Best Regards, [UserName] where [UserName] is the user name that was used when registering Microsoft Outlook. After the worm has attempted to mass-mail itself, it will attempt to delete all files from the \Windows and \Windows\System folders that have any of the following extensions: .ini .log .dll .exe .com .bmp If this payload is executed, the only way to get the system back to an operational state is to reinstall it. SARC has also received several corrupted samples. The corrupted variant of this worm will be detected as W32.Naked.dam. The corrupted variant cannot cause any damage to the system. However, if found, it should be deleted. Removal instructions: To remove this worm: 1. Run LiveUpdate to make sure that you have the most recent virus definitions. 2. Start Norton AntiVirus (NAV), and then run a full system scan, making sure that NAV is set to scan all files. 3. Delete any files detected as W32.Naked@mm or W32.Naked.dam. If the worm has been executed, it is very likely that you will have to reinstall Windows. ---------------------------------------------------------
HI LIST: I have heard that my Daniel Haston family may have been from Hyde Cty,NC and we know for sure they too settled in the southern part of White Cty, on the Caney Fork River. I have evidence that there was a Francis Heaston who signed a deed in 1784 in Hyde Cty, NC. Heaston was a common variant spelling of Haston. That was in page 193 of Deed Book D & E. Also, one of relatives once had a document that indicated that Daniel Haston was discharged from NC Continental Army Rev War service in Hyde Cty, NC. Has anyone on this list ever run across a Heaston/Haston/ Hastings/Haiston etc family in their Hyde Co research? thanks, Sherry _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
