Folks, Patricia C. Click, a faculty menber from the University of Virginia, has informed me of her new web site on the Freedman's Colony on Roanoke Island during the Civil War, at: http://www.roanokefreedmenscolony.com/ She is the author of a new book, "Time Full of Trial: The Roanoke Island Freedmens Colony, 1862-1867" (UNC Press). I recomment her new web site to everyone, and especially to anyone researching their African American ancestors. John

Folks, A New Project: Compiling a list of all Hyde County Churches, both past and present, with dominations and locations. Once we have a list, we can also add histories of any church we have information on, including information on the ministers and congregations, where available. Help Needed: I would appreciate all the help I can get on this project, especially from folks living in Hyde. I've been informed that a good source is the Hyde County Business Directories, 1866-1906. Does anyone have copies of the directories or have the time to visit the new Society Library and make copies from them? I will appreciate any and all assistance. This will be a great research tool for all Hyde researchers. Thanks, John PS - After this is done, we can do the same for Hyde Schools. 8>))
Where is the Gen Library located-I would be coming from Michigan-I have been in the area before-Leechville, New Lake, etc. Thanks, Nancy Dunbar

Explosion Expected in Engelhard on Saturday, May 19! Tony Spencer, Media Chair No, no, we are not predicting a terrorist plot or a bomb threat, rather a one-day surge in population from approximately 700 to 4,000 good ole folks. The 2001 Engelhard Seafood Festival Committee is pleased to announce this years annual Engelhard Seafood Festival 2001 is scheduled for May 19, 2001. This year's festival promises to be one of the best ever. Events and displays have been planned to appeal to kids of all ages, to be topped only by one of the best seafood platters imaginable. A couple pre-events are also scheduled. The first is the annual Blessing of the Fleet which will commence at 6:30 p.m. Friday evening. Engelhard is the home harbor of dozens of commercial fishing operations. The Blessing of the Fleet is also conducted annually in combination with the Festvial in a show of support for our local fishing fleet. Also on the Friday before the festival, school groups and other interested parties will have the opportunity to visit the Elizabeth II. The Elizabeth II, home harbored in nearby Manteo is a replica of one of the original sailing vessels that transported the famed Lost Colony to the new world over four hundred years ago. Both of these two pre-events will be located on Goshen Back Road, just 1/4 mile East of U. S. 264. On morning of May 19th just prior to the festival will be the 2nd annual Engelhard Seafood Festival Fun Run. The Fun Run is a 2.2 mile course for those interested in a jog, run, or walk down "Lazy Lane." The Fun Run will begin at 8:00 a.m at the intersection of U. S. 264 and Goshen Back Road. (That is Dog Corner for you local folks.) The festival will officially kick off at 10:00 a.m. in the middle of the village with welcoming comments, an invocation, and the introduction of dignitaries. After these are completed, the stage will be turned over to the master of ceremonies, Mr. Skip Waters from WCTI-TV 12 of New Bern. At around 10:15 a.m. evens such as the Little Mister and Little Miss Parade will commence with the pageant to follow. Other events throughout the day include concerts and presentations by various gospel and musical groups, karoke, the annual Miss Seafood Festival Pageant, and finally an evening street dance, performed by the Carolina Beach Club. All throughout the day, various vendors will be serving local and traditional festival foods, displaying and selling arts and crafts, providing educational displays, and more. The Elizabeth II will be open from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. on the waterfront and Miracle Amusements will guarantee a popular attraction for all with a Ferris Wheel, Jitter Bug Swings, Might Mack Trucks, a Moon Walk and other popular rides. Handicapped parking will be provided near the Red & White at the intersection of U. S. 264 and Lazy Lane and a park-n-ride will be available from Williford Auto Supply on U. S. 264 on the West side of town. For your safety during the event, the Hyde County Sheriff's Department, the Hyde County Rescue Squad, and the Engelhard Volunteer Fire Department will be on hand for any emergencies that arrive. Engelhard is located on U. S. 264 highway, just three-quarter hours West of Manteo or 1.5 hours East of Washington, N. C. Engelhard is also just a couple minutes East of the famous Mattamuskeet Lake and borders on the Mattamuskeet and Alligator River National Wildlife Refuges. The Lake Landing National Historic District is also in the area. We hope you will make plans to visit our area, enjoy our festival and see why U. S. 264 in Hyde County puts you on the "Road less Traveled." The Seafood Festival is sponsored by the Engelhard Development Corporation, a non-profit organization, whose members are concerned citizens who together strive to improve the quality of life in and around Engelhard. Please feel free to contact Tony Spencer at 252-925-9281 or www.rsspencer.com with questions or directions to the event.

John, Thanks for sending this along to us. The English are passionate about their "cricket," I hear; and, where there are English (and Irish, of course), there is a majority. --- But, what is #9. about? "Madonna." Is the world of internet eager to find out about the Blessed Virgin Mary, mother of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ? I doubt it. -- And, as for genealogy, one knows that every half-bright person in the universe has a flickering interest in his ancestry; otherwise, he would be a complete imbecile. The interest does not last long in most, but it is one of the subjects alive even in the densest brains, for a moment. We of course know that the more intelligent of the species seek passionateley to know who they are by seeking to know who they were in their ancestors. I have a copy of the book "Some Colonial and Revolutionary Families of NC", by Marilu Burch Smallwood, and it's online (with proper permission) at www.gurganus.org. I went through page by page putting in the vital information into a searchable database... A few stats... Total of 5631 people (born before 1900), and of those, 43 births, deaths, and burials in Hyde Co, and many more in surrounding counties. Below are the Hyde Co surnames, but there are many more in there, so drop by to check it out. Adams, Beckwith, Berry, Bonner, Carter, Clark, Cording, Credle, Eborn Farrow, Foreman, Gaylord, Gutom, Hollowell, Jordan, Lucas, Mann, Midgette Murray, Roper, Satchwell, Selby, Simmons, Spencer, Topping, Windley I can't do individual lookups for you (that's the reason for putting it online, so you can yourself), but if you find a specific person, I may be able to send you more details that are not online -- the text of a will, descendents after 1900, etc. If you have additions or corrections, I have built into the webpage the ability for you to add your comments for each person listed. and lastly, if this helps your research, let me know! Then I may have more motivation to move on to Volumes II and III... Ray Gurganus ray@gurganus.org www.gurganus.org
Folks, I have set up a mailing list for the GURGANUS surname which Ray Gurganus has taken over and will be listowner. As usual, follow the instructions below. Folks, We now have two new categories of the death index for you to start using. With the help of volunteers to do some of the typing this may not take as long as first expected. This death certificate information will come to you piecemeal until the entire project is completed then I will go back and add the links so you can go from page to page without a hassle. One of the new categories, the "E's" was typed by our very own web host, John McGowan, and can now be used for research at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/DEATHE.HTM The other category, Y -Z, was typed by Coley Jordan (a wonderful person to have around in time of need) and can now be accessed at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/DEATHYZ.HTM THANKS GUYS!! I will not send out a new message to the list every time a new letter of the alphabet is posted but will put them on the What's New page as they come available for you so keep checking back. Kay Lynn
John, I have a some experience with an HTML editor. I currently use FrontPage 98 working with some of the WebPages I maintain. I would be glad to help if you would like to consider me. I am no expert at genealogy but will be happy to lean a hand an as much time as I can spare. I have been researching my families for over 20 years and have created an edited most of the web material of our family. I am not an expert by no means but I would glad to help all I can. As there are many on the Hyde County board that have helped me in my research. I would gladly enjoy the chance to repay some with my help. I started out on my Rollinson/Rolison side with a little information an a couple of old family letters that described the family. I transcribed the letters and send to be put on the board and Kay read them and sent me two files of Rollinson information she had collected which help me greatly. And I would like the chance to repay her and many others that have been so helpful. Hi all, In April 1991 when I made a visit to the Hyde County courthouse I got a printed copy of the death certificate index, came home and promptly stored it away in my filing cabinet. About two or three months ago I discovered it in one of my file folders and decided to try to get these put online for all you researchers. After getting the OK from Raleigh and from the Hyde Co. Register of Deeds I have been typing this index to be posted online. I had originally hoped to have all the certificates from 1913-2001 but I'm still waiting on a copy of the 10 years that I am missing (1991-2001). I will eventually get the updated copy and will then insert these last 10 years in their proper place but for right now I thought you might want to use what I do have typed so far. This is a very slow process as there are probably close to 6000 names in this index along with other information about the decedent. I've also added some extra notes to some of them which has taken even more time. Please be patient with me while this is being posted. You folks who are researching anyone whose name starts with "Z" are going to have a LONG wait. :) http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/HYDEATHS.HTM Kay Lynn
