Folks, For those of you who might be interested... John ----------------------------------------------- William P. Cumming Map Society Meeting DATE: September 29, 2001 LOCATION: Outer Banks History Center, Manteo, Roanoke Island, NC TIME: 3:30 PM (We will gather for socializing and announcements at ~2:30 at the Art Gallery adjacent to the OBHC). Mr. David Stick will be our host at the Outer Banks History Center. The OBHC houses the incredible collection of maps and other documents and literature donated to the state of North Carolina by Mr. Stick. The following description is from the OBHC web site: http://www.ah.dcr.state.nc.us/sections/archives/arch/obhc/default.htm "The holdings of the OBHC include more than 100,000 manuscript items, 30,000 books and pamphlets, 30,000 photographs, 1500 periodical and serial runs, 5,500 maps and charts, and a great variety of paintings, drawings, prints, audio and video recordings, and ephemera. Although the holdings of the OBHC are a preeminent source of information about the Outer Banks, they also address many historical, cultural, economic, governmental, and scientific topics pertaining to North Carolina and to neighboring states." We will plan to dine at one of the many outstanding seafood restaurants at approximately 6:30 P.M. Saturday evening. Please let me know by August 10 whether or not you plan to attend and whether or not you plan to go to dinner so that we can make appropriate arrangements. Additional details regarding the weekend activities will be sent in August to those planning to attend. For information about the Outer Banks, including accommodations, recreation, etc., please contact the Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce by telephone (252-441-8144) or by email ( chamber@outer-banks.com ). Their website is www.outerbankschamber.com . You can also contact Kaeli Spiers ( kaeli.spiers@ncmail.net ) at the OBHC for information on Bed & Breakfast accommodations in Manteo. She advises that reservations should be made as soon as possible. Lodging can be difficult to find on short notice, even during the off season. For a wonderful "study guide" prior to your visit to the Outer Banks, I recommend the following book (I found my copy at a used book dealer, or you can try your public library): STICK, DAVID; THE OUTER BANKS OF NORTH CAROLINA, 1584-1958 Univ. NC: Chapel Hill, (1958) Thanks. We look forward to seeing you on the 29th. Jay Lester Chapel Hill, NC jwl@mindspring.com ph. 919-932-4694 ----------------------------------------------------
John, Thank you for reminding us, and thank Dr. Forrest for giving us a chance to experience another part of our past that, like so much, could easily slip out of the memory of an entire generation, and therefore out of the memory of all generations to come. If we do not keep alive in our generation the praise and memory of our fathers that begat us, and of our mothers that gave us birth, we are not worthy of having a past, a past without which we do not know who we are. I see a lot of reunions are in the making for Hyde County families these days! Has there been or will there be any Swindell reunions? I've never been to Hyde County, but I certainly plan to one day in the future. Folks, Please reply to the below listed email address. John -------------------------------------------------------------- Hi, I am planning a HOWARD reunion for the year in October, 2002, on Ocracoke Island. I need for the descendants of Wm. Howard & Elizabeth Yeoman, whose children were George, William Jr,. and Susannah Howard Jackson, and William's second daughter Abigail Williams(?) to contact me. At this time I am just in the planning stages and will put together more information, but first I need to find the descendants of these Howards. If you are interested in meeting your people, and believe me the few I have met are great, please email me at thh81250@aol.com or call at 252-641-0106. If not at home please leave a message and I will get back with you. Names are addresses are what I need at this stage of planning. Thank you, Teresa H. In response to Sharon Gable's question about Confederate Veteran James G. Jackson: James was the son of BENJAMINE B. JACKSON and ALICE WAHAB, of Ocracoke. His obituary listed the following children: Sons James L. Jackson, of Clarksboro, NJ, H.E. Jackson, of Richmond, Va., Ralph Jackson of Hopewell, Va., Carl A. Jackson and Andrew J. Jackson of Norfolk, Va., two daughters, Mrs. A. L. Bengal, of New Bern, NC and Mrs. S. E. Davis of Norfolk, Va., also 15 grandchildren. Ellen Fulcher Cloud
Thanks, Bob Hester, for the interesting information on the men of the Dixie Invincibles which was added to the Hyde County web site this month. I'd like to add what I have on James G. Jackson (a private in the 33rd). I'd appreciate hearing any additions or corrections to my data as family history is not always 100%. James G. Jackson (also known as James L. Jackson) was a seaman outside of his service in the war. My father remembers him as having one leg. I'm not a civil war type, so I don't know how the story folds in with the dates, but according to my father, James lost his leg below the knee in the Battle of Wilmington. He was married three times (again according to my father) - Sarah Ann Sanderson, Sarah Radcliffe and a third wife named Sarah (last name unknown). The third Sarah is buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Richmond the tombstone saying Aug 01 1874 - Feb 01 1955. James is buried on Princess Anne Road in Norfolk VA having died April 19 1937. There's a picture of him (at a Confederate gathering) on page 28 in the book "Summer on the Southside" - one of those picture books about the Norfolk area. I don't know what happened to 9 month old James from the 1870 census, but the children we did know of are Andrew, Carl, Leroy, Mildred and the one who married into our Harris family - Harold Elwood Jackson (1902 - 1977). Is anyone on the list related or have more (or better) info on James Jackson? Sharon Gable

I want to inform you that some of the posted cemeteries below for Beaufort County were removed from the Archives. They were posted without the permission of the owner and without permission of the Genealogical Society which is trying to publish them. Hopefully the Society will be able to have some of these books available soon. Mr. Leslie House (and others) did a wonderful job in his surveys/directions/maps and information he obtained from people in the area of these cemeteries. Many of these cemeteries have been distroyed or headstones lost and unreadable since his work was done in 1979-1986 so it makes this work especially important. As soon as these are published and available, I will notify the lists. Thank you for understanding. I would like to also take this opportunity to invite you to visit the BCGS web pages. http://www.ncroots.com/Beaufort/bcgs.htm Thank you again for understanding, Terria Baynor-Vice President Beaufort County Genealogical Society > > The following documents were added to the North Carolina USGenWeb Archives > > and Tombstone Transcription Register last week. > > > > http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/nc/beaufort/cemeteries/chahil.txt > > http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/nc/beaufort/cemeteries/gallbutcem.txt > > http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/nc/beaufort/cemeteries/gallnjrcem.txt > > http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/nc/beaufort/cemeteries/gerchu.txt > > http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/nc/beaufort/cemeteries/gerrard.txt > > http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/nc/beaufort/cemeteries/harhil.txt > > http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/nc/beaufort/cemeteries/haw1.txt > > http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/nc/beaufort/cemeteries/hilfam.txt > > http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/nc/beaufort/cemeteries/oldhil.txt > > http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/nc/beaufort/cemeteries/wmsnewvick.txt > > http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/nc/beaufort/cemeteries/ws_ftp.log

Folks, About half of the death certificate index haS now been posted for you to use. This has been a long project with still half of it yet to go but were it not for typing volunteers like Sallie & Clarence Gargis, Ray Gurganus, Coley Jordan and Nola Duffy, I would still be on it at this time next year. I hope you researchers have garnered useful information from it so far. We now have A-L posted and you can view them at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/HYDEATHS.HTM Be sure to read the useful information in the introduction to the index. The table at the bottom of the page are links to the information of the individuals who died in Hyde County. Enjoy! This evening I've also posted the table of contents to the Spring 2001 High Tides journal. This is a GREAT publication and I can highly recommend it to anyone who isn't already receiving it. To view the table of contents of this journal go to: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/HITIDE5.HTM Kay Lynn in soggy Tennessee!
