    3. I have made it through Volume II of "Some Colonial & Revolutionary Families of NC" by Marilu Burch Smallwood. Together with Vol I, it brings up the number of people to over 11,300, all available at www.gurganus.org. Below are the Hyde Co surnames that were added or modified from Vol II. There is a good amount of overlap between the two... so some of the people from volume I have had information added. 1. Henry Gibbs, Sr. Family Web Pages
    2. John McGowan
    3. Folks, I have set up several linked web pages with some information on the first four (4) generations of the family of Henry Gibbs, Sr. and his wife Ann (Spencer?) Gibbs of Hyde Co., NC. Since the Gibbs family is so large and is connected by marriage to many other early Hyde families, we will compiled what information is available on these early generations before proceeding to the much larger extended Gibbs family. If you would like to contribute information to be posted on the first four generations of the Gibbs family, you may first wish to subscribe to the Henry Gibbs, Sr. Mailing List, if you haven't already. By doing so you can compare your information with other researchers. Any and all additions and/or corrections are welcome. Your assistance is needed and appreciated. Thanks. 1. Re: NCHYDE-D Digest V01 #46
    2. Dear Folks: My ancestors migrated West from the Mattamuskeet Lake area. Therefore, I am interested in anything about that area. Can anyone give me a brief history about the Lodge and the reason for trying to save it? "SWINDELL" was the name of my family. I believe many of them had property on both sides of the Lake. I know there is a place on the South side called "Swindell Crossing" and some of the family lived at Swan Landing. Here in Missouri we are trying to save a little church at Swinton, Stoddard Co., MO. My G-Grandfather, Thomas Moore Swindell, gave the land, sawed the lumber, and with the help of his sons and the men in the community, erected the church. It will be 100 years old in March 2002 and we plan to celebrate it's birthday with a Swindell Family Reunion sometime during the summer - probably early June. In the meantime, we are trying to raise enough money to make much needed repairs to save the building. I believe there are several Swindells in North Carolina who are descended from the same line as me. I would be delighted to hear from any of them. Sincerely yours, Vivian Swindell DeLong

    1. [Fwd: Mattamuskeet Lodge Funding]
    2. John McGowan
    3. From: Mattamuskeet Foundation <mat-lake@coastalnet.com> Subj: Mattamuskeet Lodge Funding Date: June 29, 2001 I am sending this to a large number of people who have an interest in saving Mattamuskeet Lodge. I spoke with Wayne Boyles in Senator Helms' office late this afternoon and received some very encouraging news, salted with a measure of caution. The Senate Appropriations Subcommittee for Interior met yesterday and acted on Senator Helms' and Senator Edwards' letters of request for funds for Mattamuskeet Lodge and approved an amount between $3.0 million and $3.5 million. Boyles had not received the figure in writing but was certain an amount in this range was approved. Later, the full Senate Appropriations Committee met and approved the report of the Subcommittee. Now for the caution. There are two remaining steps in the process. First, the budget must be discussed on the Senate Floor. Most likely, the lodge funding will not be addressed by itself, but you never can tell. Second, if the matter survives the floor discussion, it goes to a committee that must reconcile what the House Appropriations Subcommittee for Interior comes up with. This could result in increasing or decreasing the final appropriation, but it is highly unlikely that it will be tossed out without any funding. Wayne Boyles has worked for Senator Helms for 18 years and he is trained to be cautious, but he feels we will get the $3 million and may get more. I called the contact person in Senator Edwards' office to confirm the information and get her perspective on the matter, but she was not aware that the committee had acted. She promised to find out something by Monday. I have received a number of emails and phone calls this week as the result of the article in the current issue of Carolina Country. Only one email was negative, and the individual was not opposed to an appropriation. He merely thought our figures were padded and felt $1 million would be more than enough to repair and renovate the building (and all that the old building was worth to NC). If you wrote or called one of the Senators in support of this funding, I sincerely thank you and the people of Hyde County will be eternally grateful for your support. The lodge building has always stood for a spirit of cooperation in Hyde County and my goal has been and will continue to be to spread that spirit throughout eastern North Carolina and beyond. Please take time to write a letter of thanks to Senator Robert C. Byrd, in his role as chairman of the Senate Appropriation Subcommittee for Interior, and Senators Helms and Edwards for their help in requesting the funds. In your letter, I suggest that you ask the two NC senators to please continue monitoring this appropriation throughout the remaining steps in the process to protect our interests. I have been advised that a US postal letter is better than an email for this purpose. The Honorable Robert C.
