Folks, For the past month or so I have been working on putting the 1820 Hyde Co. census online and just uploaded the last of it this afternoon. You can view the 1820 Census homepage at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/1820CEN.HTM I hope this new addition will help in the search for your ancestors. John McGowan was hospitalized this past Saturday so if any of you have sent him a query or note in the past 4 or 5 days and haven't received a response this is the reason. If you have sent John a query and wish it to be posted right away please forward it on to me and I'll see that it gets put online. My e-mail address is: genie12@bellsouth.net. I will not be at my computer from October 25 - Nov. 5 so hold off sending any notes or queries to my desk until my return. Glenn and I are taking a little hiatus to the Outer Banks and Hyde County and will be at the courthouse in Swan Quarter at the Hyde County Historial and Genealogical Society meeting on the 28th at 2:30. I hope to see a lot of you there! Kay Lynn

Folks, John McGowan called me late this afternoon and said he'd be offline while his computer was in the shop. Seems the CPU fan was not working and the computer overheated. I don't know how long he will be out of commission but in the meantime please send all submissions and queries to me at: genie12@bellsouth.net and I'll get to them in the order I receive them. Hopefully this "fix" will not take too long. Thankfully I'm on the downhill swing of the death index now!! I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my typing volunteers: John McGowan, Coley Jordan, Ray Gurganus, Nola Duffy and most especially Sally & Clarence Gargis who single-handedly did just about the last 2/3 of the index. Had it not been for all of you, I would surely still be doing this index into the year 2002. I hope I did not wear out my welcome with any of you and that you might be available should we ever need typists again. My best to all of you on this stormy Friday Tennessee evening. Kay Lynn
I hope this request doesn't sound too silly, but I am writing short, family stories for Christmas gifts and such for my family. I've started on one for my ggrandfather, William Wallace SADLER,(1840-1912), who enlisted in the Confederate Army 9 Sept 1861. Can anyone tell me, from an old letter, diary, or newspaper, what the weather was like in Hyde County, NC that long ago fall day? And what kind of crops would the farmers have been planting in that area? Thank you so much for your help and guidance. I've been reading a great deal about NC, the War of the Rebellion, and trying to piece together my stubborn SADLER/DANIELS/WATSON family members. Folks, As you may know, we have set up a page on Hyde County Churches, past and present, at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchyde/CHURCHES.HTM We already have information on a few of the Hyde Churches online in connection with our Photos Pages, and now we will begin adding info on the other churches from the Hyde History Book, published in 1976. However, this data and the accompanying photos, being compiled 25 years ago, may need updating. To do so, we need the assistance of one and all. If you have information or photos on any of the Hyde Churches, past and present, please let me know. If you are a member of a particular church, please contact your pastor and ask for info, or take your camera next time you are there. Or if you have the telephone number, email address, or mailing address of any church, please forward this to me. Please folks, we need your help. We can't do this without your assistance. We will appreciate any and all assistance. Thanks. Also, does anyone know if the Hyde Co. High School has an email address? Thanks. John

Folks, Just thought I'd drop all of you a line letting you know that Lois Johnson Meekins sent her Dare County Cemetery book to the publishers today. She's having 1500 copies printed and I think they'll go like hotcakes once they hit the stand. The publisher has told her it will be 3 months before the books are delivered to her but you can place an order with Lois now. Her prepublication price is $35.00 plus whatever NC tax there is. I don't as yet know if the $35.00 includes the shipping & handling. If you'd like to preorder one of these books please address Lois at: Lois Johnson Meekins 142 Waterlily Rd. In a message dated 08/09/2001 1:53:23 PM Eastern Daylight Time, lynn_harper@hotmail.com quotes: > "State of North Carolina > Hyde County: This may certify that on the 10th day of February > 1859 at two oclock at the House of(sp? name)Watsons on the Ridge in said > County I solomized the rites of Matrimony between Wm Wallace Sadler & Lara > Jane Daniels & pronounced them man and wife. > (signed) Jno S. Burrus...(?sp/Preacher)" This license leads me to another question, too. I would be interested in learning about any Hyde/Currituck county preachers named Burrus or Shelton in the latter part of the 19th century. My grandfather was born in 1896 in Kitty Hawk (then Currituck County), the first-born son of Kitty Hawk-born parents, and was given the first and middle names "Shelton Burrus", neither of which were family names. I was told as a child that he was named for an itinerant preacher. His parents were Primitive Baptists, or at least his mother was. I've always wondered who the preacher was. I know the preachers travelled Hyde and Currituck and surrounding counties by boat for preaching services. Any ideas? Deanna
Received a spidery, two-sided, handwritten marriage license copy issued to William Wallace SADLER, (my great-grandfather)...(1840;NC-1912;PA). "State of North Carolina Hyde County: This may certify that on the 10th day of February 1859 at two oclock at the House of(sp? name)Watsons on the Ridge in said County I solomized the rites of Matrimony between Wm Wallace Sadler & Lara Jane Daniels & pronounced them man and wife. (signed) Jno S. Burrus...(?sp/Preacher)" Can anyone tell me the first name before Watsons? It almost looks like "Proust?" Can anyone tell me the word signed after Burrus name? Also seeking information on Lara Jane Daniels. Deeply appreciate any help you may give me. Will share my genealogy with others. Thank you. Folks, As most of you are aware, our Hyde Pages has an onsite Search Engine at the top of the Home Page, provided by FreeFind. Each week FreeFind send me a report of activity on the Search Engine, including what surnames were searched for. On a number of occasions, I have noticed that there have been searches for my surname, McGowan. Unfortunately the search engine will return "hits" for the surname throughout the Hyde Pages, and since my name is at the bottom of many of the pages so that folks can get in touch with me, so the searcher will have to search through all of the "hits" to find data on the McGowan family. So if anyone is interested in information on the McGowan family in Hyde, Tyrrell, Perquimans (1700s), Beaufort of Pamlico Counties or points west, please contact me personally. Below is part of the report I receive from FreeFind showing the words searched for during the past week.
